Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Excellent deal with E.ON for power – and get 1,500 Clubcard points (3,600 Avios)

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Back in May I ran an introduction to earning Clubcard points with gas and electricity provider E.ON.  E.ON is one of the lesser known Tesco Clubcard partners. This is because, since the end of 2013, you do NOT earn Tesco Clubcard points directly from them.

E.ON has its own rewards scheme – E.ON Rewards – and it is those points which can be converted into Tesco Clubcard.

The other reason it is low key is that E.ON Rewards is an ‘opt in’ scheme. If you don’t sign up, you don’t earn any points, even though E.ON is supplying your fuel.

E.ON Rewards is simplicity itself. You can find an introduction to the scheme here.

You earn a capped 1,500 E.ON Rewards points per year for being on an eligible electricity or dual fuel tariff

Points accrue daily and are awarded monthly

You can either transfer these to Tesco Clubcard (1:1, no minimum) or for Bonusbond high street shopping vouchers (500 = £5 voucher)

Points expire after two years if not redeemed

Points do NOT transfer automatically. You need to go onto the E.ON Rewards website to move them across.

As you can see, E.ON appears to be quietly hoping that many customers either fail to opt-in to the scheme or, if they do, forget about it and let their points expire!

Why you may want to sign up with E.ON now

1,500 Clubcard points per year is worth 3,600 Avios or 3,750 Virgin Flying Club miles.

Given the size of the most gas and electricity bills, however, this is a drop in the ocean. Your priority should be to find the cheapest supplier and only then, if it is E.ON, take the points into account.

At the moment, however, E.ON is VERY competitive for most people.

As you can read about here, moneysavingexpert.com has signed up with E.ON to organise a ‘bulk switch’.  What this means is that – in return for getting an exclusive, exceptionally competitive, tariff from E.ON – MSE will try to get as many of its millions of readers as possible to switch.

You have until September 17th to sign up for this tariff.  The MSE site here can show you how the tariff compares to what you are currently paying and what else is available on the market.

As well as negotiating this exclusive tariff, MSE will pay you £30 cashback once you have switched.

You will also earn 1,500 Clubcard points over the next year if you choose to convert your E.ON Rewards points to Tesco – and those points will get you 3,600 Avios or 3,750 Virgin Flying Club miles.

  • JQ says:

The last time MSE organised a switch about 10000 people actually switched. I checked it and my existing tariff was still cheaper, and this was the case with many people.

For anyone who is looking to switch energy supplier, do NOT go with npower even if they are much cheaper – they have had the same ongoing IT problem since 2011, worse than BA or Lloyds! Also avoid going with British Gas as they are the only supplier who screws with your credit report.

    • RIccati says:

Yes, the problem is: they want to capture your data (type of supply/address/expenditure) and show no clear kWt/hr price for the tariff you sign up to switch to!

      • Ian says:

Disagree. The Cheap Energy Club run by mse is the clearest energy comparison and switching service I’ve ever used. The e-on offer above was the best available fix for us.

        • Rob says:

I did sign up with Cheap Energy Club last year and I have been impressed by the email notifications they send through when there are tariffs cheaper than mine.

        • RIccati says:

You can’t disagree with the fact.

The fact is: they do not display tariff prices in kWt/hours. There is a long form to fill.

          Did not proceed past that.

      • J Gibson says:

Indeed, just click ‘feedback & full info’ on the results page and you can see the standing charge/unit price for each tariff.

        • RIccati says:

I assume that before getting to that “feedback & full info” page you need to provide all your current supply details, username and password — effectively register.

    • The_Real_A says:

I echo the advice to stay away from npower – this is coming from someone who felt adequatly confident ot deal with any legal/customer service type issue with any company upto this point… npower disfunction and incompetence is in third world teritory.

    • Fenny says:

Npower’s utter lack of customer service/ability to actually function in any normal way is legendary. I’d rather poke my eyes out than ever be a customer of theirs again.

      • cheekychappie says:

I was with them a few years ago with no problems

      • Alan says:

I ended up having to take npower to the Ombudsman to sort out my last transfer away. Took 5 months to sort, eventually got back the £1k they’d erroneously taken out my bank account by DD plus some compensation on top! Now with EBICO, tiny gas usage so happy to have no standing charge.

  • Frenske says:

Another import question is does E.On accept pay.com gift cards. My provider accepts them and even pays interest on the positive balance.

  • Emily says:

Do any other energy or utility companies give avios? Don’t think there is a list anywhere although I maybe wrong!

  • mark2 says:

I just checked and they claim that I could save £34 per year (although with £60 to switch out against £0).
If they paid the £30 in points rather than cash …..

    • Globetrotter7 says:

Just checked too and for me they claim I could save £27 per month, bringing my electric bill to around £92 per month with E-On… But my ‘exit fee’ is £30?

      • mark2 says:

        per fuel

        • mark2 says:

£27 per month sounds worthwhile; it depends on your current deal.
I can recommend Scottish Power. They have just refunded £355 credit balance without being asked (surely the account should be in credit as we move towards winter). So now I can buy some more pay.com cards and get over 3,000 Avios for paying it back in!

        • Globetrotter7 says:

          Ah ok. Makes sense

      • cheekychappie says:

Don’t forget that the claimed saving is new deal vs when you stay on your current deal after it ‘goes bad’. Most of us would switch to something cheaper at the end of the contract. So it’s often an inflated saving figure.

        • John says:

Not neccessarily. There are two options you can select after you generate your results. “WHAT YOU’RE CURRENTLY PAYING” and “WHEN YOUR FIX ENDS, YOU’LL BE OVERPAYING BY” Only the second option does what you say and inflate the savings. I think by default it only alerts you when there is a cheaper tariff than what you’re currently on.

          • Rich says:

There’s actually a third figure now, which combines the two tariffs (based on when your current tariff ends) to come up with a price for “the year starting today”!

          • cheekychappie says:

You can get a fair comparison by just inputting contract end date of 2018.

  • Pat Butcher says:

I got shafted so badly by npower last time I tried to switch I dont have the will to try again. Took over a year to sort out thanks to their shocking customer service.
What are e on like for Cs.

  • RT says:

time to hunt for some pay.com cards 🙂

Thanks for this. I was actually looking to change my electricity supplier as my fixed came up at the end of the month. 🙂

  • Mark says:

Waht exactly does “UP TO 1500…” E.ON Rewards points per year mean? I can’t see how they calculate it on their website.

  • Liz says:

OT: new FB Suitcase sticker just appeared – 25 Avios for sharing the 12 hr challenge sticker
