News in brief:

Priority Pass relaunch

Priority Pass, the membership scheme which gives you global airline lounge access, relaunched yesterday with a new website and a new logo.  The new logo was certainly overdue.

The new site seems to feature more, and larger, lounge photographs to give you a better idea of the space you will be visiting.  The search feature has changed from a drop down list to a box where you type in the name of the airport you are visiting.

Pricing remains unchanged.  For UK residents, it is either:

£69 plus a £15 fee per lounge visit (£15 per guest)

£159, to include your first 10 visits, and then £15 thereafter (£15 per guest)

£259 for unlimited visits (£15 per guest)

Interestingly, you still cannot buy the version of Priority Pass which is given away free with American Express Platinum.  This offers unlimited visits and one free guest per visit – and you get a second Priority Pass, which also admits a free second guest, for your main supplementary cardholder.  This gets a family of four into a lounge for free.

Cathay Pacific unveils major changes to Marco Polo Club

Cathay Pacific has announced major changes to its Marco Polo Club loyalty scheme.

Many HfP readers will be a member of Marco Polo Club because American Express was, until early 2014, giving away free Gold status (which got you into British Airways lounges) with the Platinum card.

The changes are similar to those put in place by British Airways in April.  People who fly on flexible business and first class tickets will earn status more quickly and earn more miles.  Those who fly on discounted economy tickets will earn less – far less.

In some ways, the changes make BA look angelic.  You will earn 5 tier points for a discount economy flight of up to 3,700 miles.  To put this into context, you could fly the equivalent of London to New York a ludicrous 119 times one-way in economy and still not qualify for a Silver card at 600 points.

These changes will be in place from 15th April.  Full details are on the Cathay website here.

How to use pay.com gift cards to top up your Amazon account

If you are buying pay.com cards at Tesco to generate free Clubcard points (and free Avios), one of the most popular ways of cashing them out is to buy Amazon gift cards.  I wrote more about pay.com here if you are not familiar with it.

You can email these to yourself and add the balance to your existing Amazon account.  It is used up automatically when you make a purchase.

This is a little fiddly, however.  There is now an easier way.  By using this link, you can now top up your Amazon account directly using a £25 pay.com card.   No need to fiddle about with redeeming a gift card.

I notice the old 3v cards in my local Co Op.
They are just sitting not making anyone anyone any money. At least with Tesco they were fast moving. Surely that is what supplier/shop wants= fsst moving stock

    • Tilly71 says:

When I can’t find any in T I buy them from co-op as still get 2 x MR points. Also a lot of the time you get money off coupons in co-op and these still scan when you purchase GC’s but just mix in a little shopping.

      • Rob says:

You can, apparently, get a pay.com at many Paypoint outlets and load it via the machine. Issue then is being in a store where credit cards are accepted for Paypoint. Not entirely sure how this works as not found one yet.

        • The_Real_A says:

Its a maximum of £150 per voucher and a fee of £3.50. Not all retailers will accept a CC since its under the electronic money category on the machine.

  • MadMiler says:

Slightly OT: Trigger cc bonus through buying pay.com cards to directly save on your fuel purchase. Morrisons still offers 1p per litre off for every £10 in gift cards, as I just purchased 10 cards at my local store for 25p off fuel voucher. No Brainer!

    • MadMiler says:

And, unlike Tesco, you can use self check-out too to purchase gift cards at Morrisons too!

      • Jason says:

I did the same yesterday, for the first time, it’s great. The cards were over 2 years old.

    • Nick says:

      Shhh!!!!

      • Jason says:

I preferred the tesco route, with fuel save, until today.
I did try and sneak a few un-activated ones, to use in tesco, but the tills weren’t having any of it 🙁

        • JQ says:

LOL, I briefly considered lifting some from Morrisons to activate at Tesco but my wife said no!

          • RICO says:

I’d be worried if she said yes, it would mean she intended to “shop” you and get a few months peace and quiet while you are staying as a host of her majesty.

    • Gavin says:

They also have no problem with you buying 15+ cards at a time, and you can sell the fuel voucher on eBay for about 80% of face value.

Self service check out does work, but I was rudely told off by a member of staff at both the Camden store and another London store for using it, who said you’re not allowed to go through self check out with gift cards.

      • Talay says:

I might take umbrage at such a reprimand from a retailer. Or may have simply told them to go pick on someone else if they liked working there.

  • Neil says:

Slightly OT- Award Wallet not been able to update Tesco since 22 Sept. Anyone else having similar problem?

  • Howard says:

    AW having problems with Tesco.

  • Natalie says:

Is it really true I can bring someone in free with my priority pass? I have the US AmEx Platinum — I was under the impression it costs $25 per visit?

    • Alan says:

Sorry, Natalie – it’s only available with the UK Amex – on the upside your annual fee is much lower than ours!

  • Nick M says:

OT – Hilton have announced which properties are changing reward categories… one to note is the Corby Hampton will become a Cat 2

    • Jason says:

What was it before cat 1?
I assume it’s now more to redeem there?
Bit annoying as used it for some mattress runs earlier this year to get gold:)

    • James says:

      Got a link?

    • Simmo says:

Book 2 separate nights with a day inbetween for 10,000 points.

Charge a drink to the room each time and should count towards status.

I value Hilton Gold at a ‘saving’ of £30-40 per night for a couple (90% upgrade rate and free breakfast)

      • JQ says:

Do you even need to charge the drink? T&C for AB promo says award stays count

  • Smid says:

Interesting note on the Platinum Amex small business card, it does not allow guests in on its Priority Passes. Even the customer services weren’t aware of this, so ended up chasing around spare 15 quid charges.

  • Corrin says:

OT sorry, can anyone guide me ? My hubby and I both have amex gold cards, we get 2 x free lounge passes a year. We have never used them before, in December we will use them at Antigua airport, do we need to book or do anything or just turn up ? Last year we didn’t need them as we flew UC. Thanks for any help !

    • JQ says:

No, just go in. hopefully the lounge dragon knows what the lounge club card is.

    • ADS says:

I don’t think the lounge in Antigua is part of Lounge Club

      • Corrin says:

Damn ! you are right, I just called them they no longer use that lounge .. grrrr ! Now ….which LGW north lounge is best with kids ?

        • Nick says:

Number 1 is good. I don’t have kids, but there are often quite a few in there. Number 1 lounges do have a habit of turning people away because they are full, so don’t take it personally if they turn you away! You can book in advance for £5 per person which guarantees entry and gives you fast track security too. Personally I wouldn’t bother paying for that, but you might feel that it’s worth it.

          • Nick says:

Failing that, there is an Aspire lounge downstairs too. It’s fine.
