Save 40% on Avios flights from the UK to Madrid

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Iberia, BA’s sister airline, is offering a 40% saving on Avios redemption seats to Madrid for the next five months.

This offer is only available when you book via Iberia Plus.  You need to have an active Iberia Plus account which is more than 90 days old, as you cannot otherwise transfer Avios from BA or avios.com.

This is why I recommend that EVERY HfP reader should have an Iberia Plus account.  You might think that you don’t need one, but an offer like this will suddenly turn up and you find that you cannot take part due to the ’90 day’ rule.  Get over to the Iberia website and sign up now.

Here are the rules:

You can only book Iberia flights to Madrid, not the BA ones

It is available on all Iberia departures from the UK to Madrid

You must book by 21st October for travel by 16th March 2016

You cannot travel between 18th December and 7th January 2016

As Iberia does not have ‘Reward Flight Saver’ you will be paying slightly higher taxes than a British Airways redemption – but the saving in Avios easily outweighs this.

The discounted prices are, on off peak dates:

Blue Class (economy) – 7,800 Avios + £58 return

Economy (available when Blue is sold out) – 11,700 Avios + £58

Business – 15,300 Avios + £71

For comparison, an off-peak redemption on BA would cost 13,000 Avios + £35 in EuroTraveller and 25,500 Avios + £50 in Club Europe.

Remember that BA and Iberia have different peak and off-peak charts – February half-term is peak for BA but off-peak for Iberia.  Just to make things more complicated ….

Iberia is running similar offers from other European cities and has also reduced the cost of domestic connections in Spain as well.  With Winter drawing in, a weekend in Madrid may be just the ticket – Business Class is especially good value.

Remember that some Iberia flights, usually around 6pm departures from Heathrow, are operated by long-haul A330 and A340 aircraft for cargo reasons.  Redeem for those in Business Class and you get a flat bed for your flight to Madrid.  I did such a flight which I reviewed here.

      Really recommend this flight!

I was 1 of 4 people in the whole cabin!

(Same couldn’t have been said for the BA 767 on the way back! – at least that was bed eats too i guess)

  • chris says:

Are these flights available from Manchester?

  • Liz says:

I have been searching for flights from Edinburgh and can only find direct flights to and from Madrid on a Friday and Sunday. Is this the case the whole year round or is there normally more direct flight availability during the summer months does anyone know? Random dates in Nov are coming out at 18900 Avios + £69.55 for Business.

  • Liz says:

How is Madrid for a city break holiday for 5 days. Is there enough to see and do? We will be hitting our IHG free night voucher target soon so could use it for one night at the Intercontinental.

    • Stephen C says:

There’s plenty to see and do in the city itself plus lots of good day trips as well. Public transport is excellent and relatively cheap, Toledo and Segovia are my top recommendations for day trips.

      • Liz says:

Thanks Stephen C – we are seriously considering a wee mini break now!

    • Liz says:

I’ve just jumped in and booked a 5 day city break in March to Madrid – cost was only 18000 + £69.55 for business direct from Edinburgh! Also used CMA to transfer my points across. Buying the wine from Vino Seleccion earlier in the year triggered my account and allowed me to do this spur of the moment extra trip for next year. Thanks Rob and others for all the advice on this site!

      • Worzel says:

Liz, seems as though you’ve done really well- as others have posted there’s plenty to do in Madrid.
We were there in March this year for 4 nights and the weather was very pleasant. Then off to TFS in Business class with Iberia-very nice lounge and flight.
If you were to struggle for places to visit, you could always take Hubby to Real Madrid’s Stadium 🙂 .

        • Rob says:

Real Madrid tickets available for Emirates Skywards redemption, remember!

        • Liz says:

He’s was drowning his sorrows last night after Scotland’s match! I draw the line at a football match but I don’t mind going to the stadium for a look – we did the Barcelona one a few years ago. Wish there was more availability to Europe from Edinburgh/Glasgow without having to go via London. Although we did book for Munich in Dec for the Xmas markets before the changes in April to get the free connecting flight.

  • dynamo says:

Iberia website refusing to offer me direct flights LHR to MAD on avios. Will do direct back.

IT error? I have checked a range of dates.

  • Lyssie says:

Rob – did you have a website with the Ts&Cs of this? Cannot find and my redemption went up in Avios midway through (on the 21st). Trying to get IB to honour and return Avios difference so looking for “evidence”!
