Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

What Nick got for 37,500 Avios + £52 on Aer Lingus business class to Boston

I covered the new Aer Lingus long haul routes to Hartford, Newark and Los Angeles on Head for Points yesterday.

As this is likely to spur renewed interest in redeeming Avios on Aer Lingus, I thought I would run these photos sent in by HFP reader Nick who took a one-way redemption from Dublin to Boston recently.  It cost the princely sum of 25,000 Avios (he booked before the April devaluation) and £52 in tax.

I wrote a long Avios Redemption University piece recently about redeeming Avios points for Aer Lingus long-haul business class.  The best deal is Dublin to Boston.  Because this is just under 3,000 miles, it costs only 75,000 Avios points return.

Nick was lucky enough to get the new business class seating as you can see in the pictures below.  It does look very acceptable, especially the single seats by the windows.

First, here are a couple of shots of the bright and spacious lounge in Dublin:

Aer Lingus 1 Dublin lounge

and

Aer Lingus 2 Dublin lounge

Here is one the solo window seats:

Aer Lingus 3 solo aisle seat

and here is a side view of the centre pair – note the 19 inch TV screens:

Nick was also very positive about the food:

Aer Lingus 5 food

and

Aer Lingus 6 food

All in all, you really can’t go wrong for 37,500 Avios and £52 one-way, plus the cost of getting to Dublin.

You can learn more about the other Aer Lingus routes to the US and Canada in my article from three weeks ago here, albeit that this has not been updated to include the announcement this week.

  • Mr Bridge says:

    heres a tip,
if you are doing DUB-BOS try and take the afternoon flight.
You pre clear US customs in DUB, and apparently you need to allow 90 minutes in the morning, as the US carriers all depart AM,. We took the PM flight and US pre clearance only took 10 minutes… a real breeze

    • John says:

Great tip Mr Bridge as I am planning on redeeming Dublin Boston in future- Thank you.

  • oyster says:

Would there ever be availability for families or is it the usual restriction for solos and couples only?

  • Jovan says:

I’ve done this two weeks ago [booked for 25k on the last day before devaluation] – can recommend 3K as one of the best seats for the solo traveller.
Also not mentioned in the article was the very good [and free to Biz passengers] wifi over the Atlantic.

  • Nic says:

We did this over the summer and the business class seat was really comfortable! The showers in the lounge were well worth it too, as we were flying on to Toulouse on the return leg; the staff were really helpful. 25,000 Avios each for business with £56 tax one way, IIRC. Great value!

  • Stephen F says:

We just did LHR to Orlando and Washington to LHR. Both legs CW. It was pants both ways, rude staff, dirty seats, lounge staff eating lounge food and sitting around reading papers etc

Next time I’d rather do Aer Lingus and pay £75. Our tax was £1400 for a load of tosh.

Completely over hyped – Aer Lingus looks much better value to USA. 2-4-1 is not worth it, just focus on value and price…

  • Zoe says:

We got 4 seats in Business during July / August a few years ago. We were slightly flexible on dates but within the main summer school holidays, this was DUB – BOS. Was in the sloping seats days but great service in a small cabin.
