News in brief:

Black Friday deals

I am not a fan of Black Friday deals, to put it mildly.  However, I get a feeling that the travel industry will be hitting it hard this year given the impact on bookings from the recent events in Paris and Brussels.

Here are the first few – I will fill you in during the week as more are launched:

Melia Hotels – 30% to 45% discounts depending on city (London is 45% which includes the funky ME London – photo below – and the more traditional White House), booking already open via this link and runs to 30th November for stays until February

Expedia – beating the rush with a 72-hour sale which starts today, more details here

Hotels.com – have an interesting Black Friday one-day offer which I will mention nearer the time as I think it is meant to be secret

Air New Zealand – selling 100 economy flights to Los Angeles for £199 return.  This offer will not actually go live until Monday 30th November although, if you don’t fancy your chances, I believe that there will be other offers available on Friday.

Opodo – until Monday 30th, everyone who books a flight via the site will be entered into a draw for Wonka-style Gold and Silver tickets.  Your chances of winning a Gold prize are not huge but there are “tens of thousands” of £50 flight vouchers available as Silver prizes.  If you are booking a flight this week and Opodo is the same price, you may want to book it via this link as your chance of winning a £50 voucher should be pretty decent.

More Black Friday deals as I get them …

My first experience with a hotel pancake machine

I spent a recent Saturday night at the Holiday Inn Sheffield as I do once a year when visiting family.  I do not expect to be surprised at the Holiday Inn Sheffield (well, not in a positive way anyway) but for the first time in my life I found a pancake making machine on the breakfast buffet!

Pancake2

This is how it works.  You press the button and two piles of pancake mixture are released:

Pancake1

It is cooked as it moves, toaster like, through the machine.  The pair of pancakes then flip off the end onto your waiting plate:

Pancake3

It isn’t exactly comparable to putting a man on the moon but I’m sure you’ll agree this is a great step forward for human-kind …..

Courtyard by Marriott in Hong Kong had one of the same pancake makers… needless to say, my daughter loved it but that liking was probably enhanced by the huge variety of sweet toppings available!

  • Lux says:

Did you never try the pancake machine in the BA arrivals lounge? It’s an unnovation.

  • JK says:

The Virgin & Qantas domestic lounges have had these for a few years now. Don’t see the attraction myself, but they are popular and do seem a lot more consistent than the bloody toasters!

    • Blenz101 says:

I’ve used one of these pancake machines in an airport lounge somewhere on the west coast USA, perhaps LAX?

I’ve always wondered why they were not more popular in this setting – the batter must cost nothing and they can churn out hot breakfasts at quite a rate.

Definitely more appealing that dry toast / bacon sandwiches under a heat lamp.

The Novotel at Edinburgh Park has (or at least had) one of these last time I stayed…

    • CV3V says:

Yes it does, and they didn’t set it up properly the morning i was there. I was determined to get the darn thing working just for the sheer novelty, bit of a waste of time. Staff didn’t seem to get the importance of fixing it for me!

    • AndyGWP says:

I was trying to remember where I’d seen / used one of these!!!

      Novotel Manchester has it 🙂

  • BigK says:

It’s the nasty mixture they put in the pancake machines to make the pancake that I get concerned about.

    • Aeronaut says:

That’s the question you’re not supposed to ask… perhaps along with whether the mixture is suitable for vegetarians… !

    • Anon says:

Your not Kidding, tried one at a Holiday Inn Express in Florida on Sunday am, one bite, two chews, spat out, yuck.

  • Alan says:

Haha what a sheltered life you’ve clearly led, Rob 😛 Those pancake machines are all over the US (esp in Hampton Inn-style properties), although I’ve seen them in Oz too!

    • Adey says:

      🙂

I think ‘pampered’ more than ‘sheltered’ considering where these machines are usually located!

Waffle machines too, and I recall seeing a toasted sandwich makers someplace.

      • Alan says:

Qantas Clubs in MEL & SYD have toastie makers, handy if the hit options on offer don’t appeal!

    • RK says:

These pancake makers are in pretty much every Holiday Inn Express and Hampton Inn in the US.

My 1st price for travel food and drink dispension award 2015 is the automated beer pourer Tokyo LAN lounge , perfect pint every time.
