News in brief:

Virgin Trains launches flash sale in First Class

Virgin Trains has launched a 3-day flash sale which runs until tomorrow night.  Initial feedback from HfP readers in the comments yesterday was very positive.

There are 60,000 seats available from £12 – note that the sale covers Virgin West Coast only.  You need to travel between 12th December and 23rd January.

The special sale booking page is here.  Remember that you also earn Virgin Flying Club miles or Nectar points when booking directly with Virgin Trains.

2,015 Starwood Preferred Guest points on your next stay

The year is coming to an end, but if you can get a Starwood hotel into your travel plans before 31st December you will be 2,015 points better off.

This means any Sheraton, Westin, W, aloft, St Regis, Luxury Collection, Le Meridien etc property.  Existing bookings appear to count.

I value SPG points at 1p each – and that is a very low-ball number – so 2,015 points is a good rebate.

Excellent Rob, thanks for this, I am currently on my seven-monthly SPG points collection regime with AmEx cards referred to various family members that live in my household 😉 and also have a stay booked at a Luxury Collection hotel in Moscow for Christmas (flying BA Club For £50 x 2 + 37,500 Avios and wasting a 241 – can’t user it otherwise) and these bonus SPG points will be the icing on the cake!

  • Andy says:

The Virgin first class sale only is for West Coast. London to North West is £30 one way.

    • Andy says:

Considering it’s usually £50 each way for standard class (for my going to Oxenholme, at least), £30ish for 1st is something of a bargain.

  • Rob says:

OT. But has anybody seen these ‘Hotel Voucher Shop’ gift cards in Tesco? They are advertised on their website. It just occurred to me these could be an effective way or churning through the Christmas 100 point bonus cut-outs. It seems they are valid in most of the big hotel names.

    • Fenny says:

Not seen those, but I’ve decided the best way of using the bonus point vouchers is to buy £20 Currys vouchers, then using those to buy Now TV and Netflix vouchers.

  • Thunderbirds says:

OT: BA sent out an e-mail with a flash sale for Avios 40% bonus

OT: Anyone received their Ambassador renewal pack lately I’ve been waiting since July. They claim to be still coordinating with their supplier following the recent introduction of Spire…

  • Phill Ramsay says:

    Another OT

My flights from Doha to Manchester on Qatar have changed a couple of times recently with regards to what plane will be used, I know this happens a lot with Qatar but if it stays the way it is then it looks like Qatar may be using 787-8s into Manchester after all. So far the flight has gone from a A330-200 to a 777-300 and now shows as the dreamliner. I know which one I would want the most!

    • Leo says:

My HKT flight to DOH in March has also changed from an a330 to a 787…..

  • Leo says:

And YET another OT: Completely off thread. Back on the thorny issue of “missing” – ahem – the last return leg on an ex-EU BA flight – I am presuming (on the basis of having hand baggage only), one doesn’t actually check-in for the last flight? To minimise disruption….?

  • harry says:

    O/T Tesco conversion + bonus.

Any reports of the bonus being received yet?

  • Sussex Bantam says:

Massively OT – I just stumbled across “Amex’s preferred shipping partner” – myus.com. Does anyone have any experience with them ?
