Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

72 people will win 1 million Avios points with Shell Drivers Club

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Shell Drivers Club is a partner with both avios.com and British Airways Executive Club.  In December, they are giving away 72 million Avios points in a major competition.

First, a quick reminder of how Shell Drivers Club works.  It is a simple system.  You earn 1 Shell Drivers Club point for every litre of basic fuel you buy and 2 points per litre of V-Power premium fuel.  When you have collected 500 points, you can exchange them for:

250 Avios points (see the BA website for the official details, scroll down)

£2.50 Waitrose voucher

£2.50 Shell voucher

It is worth noting that, because of the relatively poor conversion rate, you may want to take the Waitrose or Shell vouchers instead.  You are effectively ‘buying’ Avios points for 1p by taking the miles option, and that is not the cheapest of prices.

The only advantage of taking Avios is that it is a better deal for small spenders.  If you set up auto-convert, you only need as few as 20 Shell points to qualify to receive Avios (in this case, 10 Avios) at the end of each quarter.  You need to buy 500 litres of fuel to get enough points for a Waitrose voucher!

Shell has launched a big competition for Christmas

Every day until Christmas Eve, Shell is giving away 1 million Avios points to THREE people.  This means that 72 people are going to become Avios millionaires.

Entering is a little tricky.  You need to visit a Shell garage and pay for your fuel with Paypal via the Shell Motorist app on your smartphone.  This instantly knocks out people without a smartphone or who live in rural areas with poor mobile reception.

The minimum purchase is £20.

I have never tried this app, but it apparently allows you to pay without having to visit the cashier.  This could be a handy time saver and will cut down on random junk food purchases in the shop as well.

You can find out more on the Shell Drivers Club website here.  Good luck – it would be fantastic if a Head for Points reader was a winner.

How many petrol stations have blown up in the States? Probably the same number of planes that have crashed from using mobiles there. All the same, you are warned to only use the phone within and to leave it in the car.

  • Trevor says:

I used the app for the first time last week to take advantage of a £5 free refund offer from Paypal – now expired, but appeared targeted.

I found the whole process a bit slow to get started, despite having opened the app and set it all up in advance. Would have been as quick to simply walk in where there was only 1 other in the queue. What slowed me down further was the trigger constantly releasing the whole way through – hardly a great experience, and not one I plan to repeat frequently, not least because Shell garages are consistently the most expensive in my area.

While Raffles says you need 500l of fuel to get the £2.50 voucher, in practise this isn’t so for me. As a very infrequent user of Shell, I get multiple bonus offers for between 50 and 500 points, so you can get there much quicker. The sending out of the vouchers is another story though – no speed or consistency there. I plan to fill up with £40 at Shell for another 500 point bonus offer this week anyway, so may as well use the app and enter the competition, but with higher prices, I wouldn’t effectively be paying to enter otherwise.

  • Bryan says:

Signing up for the app is not too much of a pain, you get the time back when you don’t have to queue to pay. They also do other offers, I had a £5 back code from them last weekend as long as you registered and used the app to pay.

  • Mikeact says:

Bit of a relatively expensive gamble @£20 per day in my opinion, and I don’t like the only way to pay is via your PayPal account, (and Shell are never competitive around my area of the South Coast. ) Apart from that it worked well when I tried it the once.

  • BeThatGuy says:

    Blimey,

    So I have to:

    (1) Download a 30Mb app onto my phone
    (2) Physically go to a Shell garage to pick up a Driver’s Club card
    (3) Register the card on the app
    (4) Go back the the Shell garage and scan the QR
    (5) Wait
    (6) Fill up and hope the fuel keeps flowing to £20:01
    (7) Cross my fingers

    Lost me at (2) I’m afraid 🙁

Good luck to those who do win though – you deserve the prize for sheer perseverance !!

  • Tilly71 says:

My local Shell garage does not accept the paypal option, they disabled it due to many problems with motorists thinking they had paid and the payment didn’t go through via paypal.

  • Gavin says:

1 million avios would be great but the amount of effort required for a chance to enter is too much for me, also not a fan of using paypal if I can avoid it.

like others shell are not that competitive in my area (Berks) as I have the full range of supermarket petrol stations keeping prices low, plus an esso (clubcard) on the way to work which is usually very cheap. the shell is in a ropey part of town as well!

  • Waribai says:

Yes, I used this too for the first itme last weekend to take advantage of the £5 of offer. Like others I found it cumbersome. I actually went to the till afterwards to make sure that the app had worked and my petrol had been paid for.
Last thing you need is to be accused of bilking!
