This is a tenuous link to this post so I hope no one minds. I want to book a number of Hilton hotels to take advantage of my Diamond status (thanks Rob). However I want to use my BAPP credit card to meet the spend. Is there anyway to book direct with Hilton in sterling to avoid the foreign transaction charge. Thanks in advance for any advise/assistance.

    • aliks says:

If you succeed in getting Hilton to charge in GBP then they will almost certainly use Dynamic Currency Conversion which adds 3% FX charges – this may defeat your objective.

    • John says:

All hotels use local currency (or local tourist currency, like euros in Turkey).

“Hilton” provides a booking system for their hotels but the booking and price will be by the individual hotel. The only way to pay Hilton directly would be a purely points stay, but you can only buy points in USD.

Individual hotels can of course apply DCC, but Amex doesn’t support DCC so there wouldn’t be any option but to pay the 3% Amex forex fee if you want to use a GBP Amex.

      • Tracy says:

Thanks for the replies. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing a trick.

  • Danksy says:

I seem to remember there’s the healthrow rewards promo finishing fairly soon too?

  • Geoggy says:

I’m trying to status match our way back to one world after both our Cathay cards from Amex expired.

So far we have Etihad Gold, Gulf Air Falcon Flyer (gold again I think) and Avianca gold.

So can get Alitalia match which I will do but that still won’t give One World status so I’m stuck.

Air Nerlin were doing matches but I have no German or US address.

    Can anyone help?

  • VP says:

Got the Al Italia status match. Used their Gold card for the Turkish Airlines Elite (Star Alliance Gold) status match. However have been provided with a challenge. Star Alliance Gold for 4 months within which if I take 1 Turkish Airline International flight then extended to 1 year and if I get 15,000 status miles within that year then extended for another year. Shame as have no plans to take Turkish airline in next 4 months but perhaps others can plan the status match based on their flying patterns. I got the response within 4 days of submitting my passport copy, Al Italia Gold card copy and my statement showing 0 miles and 0 flights.

    • Alan says:

Yeah, sadly Turkish seem to have switched from match to challenge in the last couple of months of last year with no warning.

  • Gavin says:

Had missed that Avios.com sale for carhire.

Comes up £25 cheaper than the AvisBA option for my US road trip, think I will book that today.

    Cheers!

  • Lady London says:

Hertz has an apparent 25% off till the end of January.

I’ve noticed though that shortly after the 25% (previously 33%) sales start, prices often miraculously move up so the prices pretty much land where they were without the 25% discount.

So could be worth a look. Hertz has also been quite good for the odd useful Lufthansa miles promo.

    • John says:

For Australia and NZ, I find Hertz prices drop significantly at around 3 weeks before pickup. In the months before they can go up and down.

For example if you want to book 3 months ahead, then the extra price for airport pickups often make it cheaper to take a taxi to a city Hertz. But then with 2-3 weeks to go, suddenly there will be an airport prepaid rate which is the same price.

Also many Hertz prepaid rates are actually fully refundable up to a point so if the GBP rises you can cancel and rebook for cheaper.

Last day of Tesco ClubCard quarter is 28th January.
So make sure that your auto-convert option is as you want it (mine is switched off so that I can try to get another 1000 miles from Virgin).

    • Andrew H says:

I’ve switched mine off in case of a Tesco bonus later this year.

I’ve never converted to vouchers before. So do Tesco actually send your paper vouchers in the post? But you don’t have to use them and it doesn’t affect your clubcard balance?

I’ve noticed no one seems to cover this aspect of Tesco clubcard online!

      • Rob says:

You get both – they show online and you get paper copies to use instore, if you are crazy enough.

        • Pol says:

You can turn off paper vouchers on your account and just print them if you want to use instore.

          • Andrew H says:

Thank you! I won’t be spending them instore – I just want to convert them to avios at some point.

  • Ben Davies says:

O/T I was told during the week by secure message that I couldn’t have 2 barclaycards. Now i have found this on their website http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/personal/customer/get-another-barclaycard
