Three little tricks to help you hit your IHG Accelerate target

If you are working towards your IHG Accelerate target – and this is probably the most generous hotel promotion you will see this quarter – there are three little tricks and kinks which can help you meet your target.

Thanks to the HfP readers who helped with these.

IHG has launched a targetted bonus for buying points

Many of you will have received an email from IHG Rewards Club yesterday offering a bonus of up to 75% if you buy points.

I am not, at 75%, a serious buyer.

However, I will be buying 1,000 points.

Both my wife and I have an Accelerate target which is ‘buy some IHG points’.  If you got that, now is your best chance to do it as you will receive a 30% bonus on a 1,000 point purchase.

To see if you are targetted for a bonus, visit the IHG ‘buy points’ page here.  You will initially see the normal pricing but the special offer will appear once you are logged in, if you qualify.

‘Earn When You Redeem’ – option 1

Many people have a challenge which involves making a points redemption.

This triggers on making the booking and NOT on completing the stay, it seems.  If you have this challenge, make a hotel booking for a few months down the line – beyond the 30th April promo closing date for safety.  You can always cancel later.

‘Earn When You Redeem’ – option 2

Alternatively, there are some digital downloads available in the IHG rewards catalogue.  The Language Translator Software is FREE.

A reader downloaded this and it triggered the ‘earn when you redeem’ bonus, albeit it took a month to show up on his Accelerate home page.  Easy.

IHG One Rewards update – April 2024:

  • David says:

I purchased an ‘Earn When You Redeem’ night on 14 January for a stay in early April but have not yet received the bonus points yet.

    • Martin says:

Experience would suggest It takes weeks for bonus points to post, up to 4-6 weeks with some of mine during the last promo.

      • AndyGWP says:

I’m still waiting for some to post… I wonder if I should be chasing?? :/

        • Fenny says:

I emailed the other day as I’d not been credited for applying for the IHG Visa card in December as part of the last Accelerate promotion. I said I knew it may take some time, but wasn’t sure how long to wait, as it was over a month. Got the points and the completion bonus yesterday and an email today to say they had gone through.

          • AndyGWP says:

Thanks Fenny – having checked, its the Visa spend holding me up (performed at end of November, and on December statement), so have given them a kick… it’s worth nearly 40k points and my balance needs it after putting through a few points bookings recently! 😉

          • Pid says:

Having been chasing mine too, just waiting for an answer.

  • Jason says:

Does it also work for points and cash redemptions?

  • avidsaver says:

This is the first time I am taking part in this promotion. I hopefully have hit two and a half of my targets by making a “points & cash booking”, this stay was made as my “January stay” and this was booked as one of two stays to be made “via the app”. I completed this stay over two weeks ago but nothing is showing on my Accelerate progress page. Is this usual? How long do the completed targets usually take to register? Many thanks.

    • Liz says:

My January cash stay on the 9/1 shows on my accelerate page as completed but the points haven’t posted yet – they will be added at some point soon but at least it is registered on my accelerate page. Do points and cash bookings count ? Or was that a specific target for you?

      • avidsaver says:

Thanks Liz. Yes, one of my targets was make a points and cash booking.

        • Sandgrounder says:

I have this target as well, it says to ‘book’ using points and cash. I do not think that this will count as a qualifying ‘stay’ for the purposes of the promotion. If anyone has already contacted IHG and had a definitive answer, speak up and save a few of us a job 🙂

          • Mark B says:

I contacted IHG and no it doesn’t count as a qualifying stay for any other aspect of the promotion

  • Fadi says:

I don’t have these boxes to tick in my target. I have made a stay that should qualify for a few conditions, does anyone know how long they take to post? Welcome points and regular room points already received.

    • Me says:

Somewhere between two weeks and never, based on my Accelerate 2015 experience. I got them all eventually, after several emails to IHG. Not the most efficient way to run a promo, IHG!

    • Fenny says:

I had a cash stay 2 weeks ago. The points for the stay have posted and my dashboard is showing that I have achieved the January stay and the Stay one night and half of the 2 bookings via app target, but none of those points have posted yet.

  • Me says:

Does anyone have any tips for achieving this one efficiently?

“Earn 2,000 bonus points when you book 1 Bonus Points Package”

    • Jules says:

It only costs a few £s to add this when you book a flexible rate. Obviously the flexible rate is often a lot more than advance saver but sometimes is your only option (e.g. Holiday Inn Guildford most of the time). In those cases this only costs £5 or so extra to acheive

    • Rob says:

There is an IHG website which shows hotels offering these packages, but I don’t have the link stored. I would just be looking for cheap hotels in the normal way, eg trying Fri or Sat nights at business driven hotels, and hoping you see a bonus points package on the booking options.

    • Fenny says:

I’ve tacked it on to a Weekend Stay booked via the app to hit 2.5 targets in one go. I think I paid an extra £5 per night on top of a £50-55 room (different rates Sat & Sun) at the HIX at Schipol as part of my 4 night break in Amsterdam.

  • Clive says:

How long is it typically taking for stays to post these days?

  • ww says:

Another idea – I renewed my Ambassador status using points a couple of weeks ago and it also counted as points redemption.

    • richard says:

how do you do that, I cant find the place to buy ambassador status using points

  • Chris says:

My earn when you redeem has went into the dashboard last week and it was triggered by staying at HI Dumfries on a pointsbreaks that was booked last November. There had been no redemptions on my account until yesterday’s pointsbreaks went live so the dashboard may also be triggering when a reward night posts if you had one booked already.
