Three little tricks to help you hit your IHG Accelerate target

If you are working towards your IHG Accelerate target – and this is probably the most generous hotel promotion you will see this quarter – there are three little tricks and kinks which can help you meet your target.

Thanks to the HfP readers who helped with these.

IHG has launched a targetted bonus for buying points

Many of you will have received an email from IHG Rewards Club yesterday offering a bonus of up to 75% if you buy points.

I am not, at 75%, a serious buyer.

However, I will be buying 1,000 points.

Both my wife and I have an Accelerate target which is ‘buy some IHG points’.  If you got that, now is your best chance to do it as you will receive a 30% bonus on a 1,000 point purchase.

To see if you are targetted for a bonus, visit the IHG ‘buy points’ page here.  You will initially see the normal pricing but the special offer will appear once you are logged in, if you qualify.

‘Earn When You Redeem’ – option 1

Many people have a challenge which involves making a points redemption.

This triggers on making the booking and NOT on completing the stay, it seems.  If you have this challenge, make a hotel booking for a few months down the line – beyond the 30th April promo closing date for safety.  You can always cancel later.

‘Earn When You Redeem’ – option 2

Alternatively, there are some digital downloads available in the IHG rewards catalogue.  The Language Translator Software is FREE.

A reader downloaded this and it triggered the ‘earn when you redeem’ bonus, albeit it took a month to show up on his Accelerate home page.  Easy.

IHG One Rewards update – April 2024:

  • Ralphy says:

Any tips for completing three overnight stays in three different countries?? No idea why I was targeted with that one but it is impossible to achieve my bonus based on that and one other silly task.

    • Rob says:

No joy there. You need to forget that one and focus on the other silly one!

      • Ralph says:

17,600 for staying in 3 different countries and 17,000 for completing 6 of 7 offers. the other one was 4000 points for booking and staying 4 consecutive nights. Not a good promo for me this time.

        • Lady London says:

Er… seen the rest of what you’ve been offered now.
I got something similar last year, and gave the promo a miss that time.

    • Lady London says:

Do England Ireland Scotland and Wales count as different countries, perhaps?

  • Mark says:

Can you earn more than one of your targets within one stay?

For example, I have two targets: – “Stay once in January”, and “Stay for three nights” I have booked a three night stay 29/01- 01/02, so will this trigger both?

    • Alan says:

yes, you can hit multiple targets with one stay
wish I had some decent ones – haven’t bothered with it thanks to such rubbish targets this time (and the last time!)

  • Gavin says:

Sunday nights seem to be the sweet spot in my area. Waiting to know my travel pattern / March commitments before booking

  • Guy says:

My wife’s booked a work trip through BA – flight and hotel was competitive. She’s going to an Intercontinental, and isn’t signed up to IHG yet – would this stay be eligible, as not booked direct. If it is (beginner’s question) how do you link the booking to an IHG account?

  • Ian says:

    Mine are:

    Stay More, Earn More
Get closer to the rewards you want when you stay 3 night(s) and earn 2,000 bonus points

    and

    Book with IHG
Book 2 stays directly through IHG and earn 2,000 bonus points. From our website, your mobile device or through our Central Booking Office, book with us for the best rate.

    and

    Discover Our Brands
Stay at 2 number of brands and get 2,000 bonus points.

So will all these only need me to make bookings for the future and cancel them?

Or will some / all need physical stays?

    • Simon says:

All will need physical stays, but you could hit all 3 with one 3 night stay in one brand and a 1 nights stay at another brand.

      • Gary M says:

I have a “Get closer to the rewards you want when you stay 5 night(s) and earn 10,000 bonus points” challenge

Having read the T&Cs, I can see anywhere it says they have to be consecutive or in 1 brand. I had assumed, and still assume from what I have read, that this is just a requirement to accumulate a total of 5 nights over the time period the Accelerate runs for.

        Does anyone interpret this differently?

        • YL says:

I had exactly the same one and interpreted the same as you.
I had successfully completed similar targets in the past by just accumulated X nights by staying different hotels over the specified period of time.

          • Kevin says:

            I have the same challenge.
May I know if consecutive stay 2 nights in a hotel will count as 2 nights or just 1 night as it is indictaed as “night” rather than “stay”

  • John says:

I hit all my targets about 3 weeks ago – but the offer status page states I’ve done zero. This is the first time I’ve tried one of these accelerate offers; is it normal for it to take this long for the system to recognise when you’ve hit the targets?

    • Alan says:

Sadly IHG IT is absolutely atrocious. Have the stays all posted with points OK? Assuming that’s happened then they should still eventually show up – failing that email IHG Care and ask them to speed it up a bit, but I know in the last pre-Christmas offer it took about a month after the 2nd stay for my Mum’s free night to post (it was the new customer offer)

      • John says:

Yes, the points posted for the stays just has not registered with the accelerate targets. I’ll give them a week and then send an email I think.

    • Relaxo says:

Yeah I think updates to your targets are only loaded at the end of each month. Or at least thats what happened for Accelarate 2015

      • Me says:

It’s not that straightforward. I already have two showing as completed and one at 16%. But no bonus points have posted yet.

        • Gavin says:

          Same here

        • stu says:

It takes at least 2- 4 weeks to show on your targets, only after that will the bonus be sent over, and then its another 4-8 weeks. They will land, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride!

    • Fenny says:

Yes! When I did my first IHG promotion in 2014, it took a couple of months after the programme ended before I got any points.

  • Gary M says:

Just a reminder that if you buy 1000 points , you will rule yourself out of any potential future offer of 100% bonus on 100,000 purchased, which have often appeared at some point each year. To get the 100% offer you typically have to buy the full 100K , which is your annual allowance.

    • Liz says:

Last year I bought when it was a 60% bonus – I was new then and didn’t know any better! Then later in the year I was able to buy a further 50k + 50K bonus in the June offer so hopefully we won’t get penalised for having to buy 1000 pts now!

  • Nerock says:

Do Rewards stays count towards your Accelerate target?? I would assume not but I can’t see this stated explicitly in T&Cs?

    • dgsupersonic says:

Not sure if they can be more explicit than this…

“Non-Qualifying Room Rates” or “Non-Qualifying Stay” include the following: any stay at a Kimpton Hotel, net wholesale individual and group rate, certain package rates, employee discount rate, friends and family rate, crew rate, special discounted contract rates, seasonal worker/crew rate, 50% travel club discount rate, travel industry discount rate, distressed passenger rate, IHG® Rewards Club Reward Nights/Airline Hotel Reward rate, rates booked through third party web sites, complimentary hotel Stays and any other rates not defined as a Qualifying Room Rate at IHG’s sole discretion.

      • Rad says:

… and just to be clear, points + cash is also a reward stay

      • Nerock says:

ah ok thanks.. i was looking for it under the “accelerate” t&cs but i found it in the generel t&cs now..
