This is part 2 of my review of the InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hotel.  Part 1 of my InterContinental Bordeaux review can be found here.

Yesterday I wrote about the rooms and facilities and today I am focusing on the culinary side.  Restaurant and bar wise the InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hotel has, I think, got something for everyone.

The highlight is Le Pressoir D’Argent Gordon Ramsey which opened in September 2015.  Just four months after opening, it was awarded a Michelin star, only the third Gordon Ramsey restaurant to currently hold one.  The restaurant is closed for lunch and all day on Sundays and Mondays, which is why I had to use a press picture:

I had lunch at the Brasserie Le Bordeaux which has a broad menu including oysters, salads and steak. It also has a great mini dessert selection including Bordeaux’s famous mini cake canelé.

Breakfast is served in the gorgeous upstairs area of the brasserie.

It was a very impressive spread.  With various pastries and cakes …..

There is also a ‘proper English’ and the option of having the chef cook the egg dishes of your choice.  My eggs florentine was very good.

The Orangery in the conservatory is a bright and airy bar with its own food and drink menu:

During the summer the roof top turns into the Night Beach which is apparently a popular evening destination for both hotel guests and local residents. As it wasn’t even Spring yet, I only got to enjoy the view over Bordeaux without cocktails or tapas in hand.

There is also a jacuzzi on the rooftop and despite the fact it was cold, I had to give it a try …. I may have been less keen if the bar was open.

Conclusion

The InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hotel is a beautiful luxury hotel in the heart of a lovely city. I loved how the history of the building is dominating the hotel’s interior design. You almost get the impression of having gone back in time straight into the 18th century but having taken all the technological advantages of our century with you.

The rooms are gorgeous, the spa a perfect place to relax and the staff friendly and helpful.  I highly recommend it for a long weekend away.  British Airways has direct flights from Gatwick with Club Europe fares starting at £220 return according to BA’s low fare finder.  Euro Traveller starts at £88.

If you want to redeem IHG Rewards Club points, the InterContinental will cost you 40,000 points per night.  Given that you will be lucky to find a Summer weekend at under €280 per night, this is an excellent value redemption which would get you far more value than Rob’s current 0.4p per point valuation.

You may also want to consider paying to join the InterContinental Ambassador scheme as you will receive a voucher for a free weekend night (technically buy one, get one free) at any InterContinental with your membership kit.

You can book or find out more about the hotel on its website here.

Hi Anika, was there a club lounge by the way? Thanks!

  • Leo says:

I like the public areas – it’s just the decor of the guest rooms which puts me off. Love Bordeaux – fave French city.

I lived near Bordeaux for nearly a year back in the 1980s and got to know it pretty well. A good time to visit is when the wines are released as ‘nouveau’, ie released in the same year the grapes were harvested. So they’re very fresh & fruity, served by the glass all over town. You all know about beaujolais nouveau, right? Same thing but in Bordeaux. It’s a real festive atmosphere, with accompanying ‘new’ green olives as well, ie straight from the tree without being stored in brine etc. I guess it would have been mid October.

I feel bad that my un-constructive comment yesterday started a debate that the hotel was not nice, which detracted from the point of the article. Outside it looks stunning, the food looks stunning, the interior is still er not to my taste.

There’s no doubt it all looks quality, i just cant bring myself to get over the decor. It kind of reminds me of my in laws house, where even on a bright sunny day, with so much dark mahogany and walnut i cant see beyond my the end of my hands because its all so dark. Fast forward to dark winter days, i think people get the idea.

Its only my opinion and i don’t want you to think us readers are not grateful Rob/Anika keep up the good work.

If you could see yourself to doing a review of something more er bright i’d be happy easter bunny! Happy easter!

Great always been on my bucket list…

Keep up the hotel reviews I think it’s a niche blog in its own right!

There are another couple of extended pieces planned for April and May – after that it depends what else we get offered.

Hi Anika, Nice reivew, really appreciate it and good timing as we’re heading to Bordeaux this summer

Was breakfast included? If I book using reward points, I assume breakfast is not included. Do you know how much extra it would be per person for breakfast if we pay on the spot?

  • Alan says:

Nice review, thanks Anika – shame that Rob clearly knew in advance what the Ramsay restaurant opening times were and made sure you didn’t run up too big an expenses bill by being there when it was open 😀

  • Mike says:

I am really liking these hotel reviews, they make enjoyable reading and give me ideas for places to visit. Great work as always
