News in brief:

Turkish Airlines offering £300 Business Class seats to Istanbul on long-haul aircraft

Regular readers will remember that I flew to Istanbul on Turkish Airlines recently to test out their Boeing 777 business class service.  Turkish flies this aircraft on some services into Heathrow, usually on the convenient 11am departure.

Turkish has brought back the great prices I used to book my ticket.

Heathrow to Istanbul in Business Class is as low as £298 return.  From Gatwick you will pay £269.  This will be a short haul aircraft but I have heard good feedback about the seating.

Turkish Airlines is a member of Star Alliance.  This means that you cannot credit the flight to British Airways but it would credit OK to Lufthansa, United, Singapore, SAS or of course Turkish’s own scheme.  The Turkish website is here.

Free Azimo currency transfers and a £10 Amazon voucher

If you need to send money abroad, especially to an obscure destination, Azimo is offering your first transfer for FREE to all new customers AND giving you a £10 Amazon.co.uk gift card as well.

Fees are generally low anyway to major destinations, often just £1, but the offer is worth more if transferring to a more niche market.  This is all to promote their new logo, see below!

You need to use voucher code AZIMOGIFT when processing your transfer.

Azimo is especially good value for sending money to more ‘obscure’ countries which other online transfer firms do not cover.  For mainstream transactions, compare their prices with TransferWise who are their main competitior.

The promotion is not featured on their website.  In order for the AZIMOGIFT code to be accepted, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • Be a new customer
  • Excludes SWIFT, mobile top up, transfers made with a credit card and transfers from Euro to Euro or GBP to GBP
  • Minimum £50 transfer required
  • Amazon.co.uk gift card will be sent within 60 days
  • Offer ends 31st May

The Azimo site is here.  You won’t see any indication of this offer on the site, but those readers who took part when a similar deal ran at Christmas will confirm that it works OK.

Hotels in Istanbul are super cheap right now. At least for the bank holiday at the end of this month, the Conrad is less than £75 a night and some of the Hiltons even cheaper. I booked the Hilton Bomonti for £48 a night in their last sale. Especially good bargain if you are getting the Diamond benefits.

    • HiDeHi says:

I’m assuming the occasional terrorist attacks are contributing to this hotel price drop…

      • Fadi says:

        Do you think so?

      • mark2 says:

There is always a reason. I would think that the whole Middle East is risky at present (even more than normal).

        • Rob says:

If you live or work in London I doubt your risk is increased …..

          • Genghis says:

Agreed. On our recent holiday to Turkey, many people had cancelled hotel bookings in places outside of Istanbul due to recent troubles. However, Istanbul was so busy! No logic. But such events could happen anywhere…

          • Callum says:

I doubt that. It seems fairly likely the risk in Istanbul is higher than London – what with there being 2 bombings this year alone (and 2 more in the capital from a group that is specifically fighting Turkey, not that Ankara is really worth a visit anyway).

Not that it would stop me going – if you’re going to start micro-managing risk on that tiny level you shouldn’t really travel anywhere at all. Or use a car!

      • Boris says:

        Indeed.

My bicycle tour guide last week – Istanbul by Bike – was saying that it was well down on usual. I heard someone mention 30-40 percent.

I think that many of the Americans have stayed home with mother. Plus fewer Russians.

        Plenty of Brits though.

Conrad currently having outdoor terrace rebuilt – so no outdoor pool at present.

        • HiDeHi says:

I would agree the risk is higher than in London but it is still very low. Some people have fears that are disproportionate to the risk involved, like my friends parents who would not come to London after the Paris attacks last year.

  • Raffles says:

Should be OK, they only emailed me about it on Friday. Will chase.

  • Matt says:

Rushed into buying some business returns to Istanbul last week at £269 from Gatwick, thinking it was a one off, good to see it’s still available!

Always wanted to try Turkish in business, only a short flight of course but worth a go while it’s cheap.

    • Boris says:

I was in economy. The business offering did not look impressive, as there was often a nearly full length queue of toilet-waiters through the Business section.

Plus the Economy food was good imo.

      • Matt says:

Given the review by Raffles recently I’m expecting a few toilet queues! Although at the time of booking it was only slightly more than the economy fare so I thought it was worth a punt.

  • James A says:

Not just IST. Ercan (northern Cyprus) is £404 in business from LHR. Seems like a LON only sale, MAN prices are unchanged.

    • Rob says:

      Beijing is just over £1k

      • Yan says:

this LON-PEK J fare has been around for a while, 7 days advance purchase

    • Ben says:

Shame not from EDI. Prices even apply across summer holidays.

  • InsideFlyer Tom says:

Yep, and Bangkok at just over £1200 return is a great fare too.

  • Clive says:

If you want a cheapy with TK to Asia then CDG – HKG is pricing up under £300 on certain days in Y

  • harry says:

National Rail are giving away 125,000 FREE Family & Friends Railcards (2 months validity). It entitles you to discounted train fares across the country. Use the Sun promo code ‘3PL8 WG64’.

Should get you cheap tickets to Heathrow & Gatwick if you use some of the tips mentioned previously on HFP.
