Curve card ‘pauses’ Amex functionality

(EDIT:  Curve has changed a lot since this article was published.  Please do not rely on the information here.  Instead, please click here to read our detailed 2020 Curve review, which includes a link for a free £10 credit when you sign up.)

Let’s keep Curve discussion here, please, to stop other threads getting clogged up.

I will do an analysis on this tomorrow.  My gut feeling in the short term is that – assuming you can easily spend £1,000 on Curve in the next three months (and £600 of that can be free ATM withdrawals linked to a Mastercard or Visa, earning points) – you might as well do that.

You will get the £35 credit, which if you have the basic card means you are in the same financial position as taking a refund, and you still have the Curve card for overseas use (if you don’t have a 0% card) and ATM use and for places where it is treated as a debit card.

Curve prepaid MasterCard

And, of course, if you take a refund you would need to pay £35 again later if / when Amex functionality returns. If you have the premium version, the maths is different and you may find the full refund better than a £50 credit.

It is always fun and games working with start-ups ….

The email:

I’m Shachar, the CEO of Curve. Today we’ve got some disappointing news. American Express have asked us to pause their functionality with Curve – which means you will not be able to use your Curve card with your Amex for the time being. This begins at midday on May 31st UK time – you’ll shortly receive another email with practical details of what will happen when we pause the American Express functionality – your Curve will continue to work with Mastercard and Visa.

American Express want to ensure there is a seamless customer support process for their Members when using their Card with Curve. We’re continuing discussions with their management, and hope that American Express decide to come back to Curve soon.

We’re continuing to build something big at Curve. The first ever platform to connect you to your everything money – transforming the way you handle your finances, bringing value and saving you time and money. We’re already connecting up all your bank cards, tracking your expenses in real time and saving you money with zero FX fees when you travel. This is just the beginning – we’re working hard on future features such as the ability to move charges between funding cards after you’ve paid, bespoke loyalty rewards and cash-backs, peer-to peer payments and much more.

As a big thank you for being one of Curve’s early adopters we are giving Blue card members £35 and Black card members £50 worth of Curve Points if you spend a total of £1000 over the next three months. You’ll be able to spend your Curve Points at any merchant that accepts Mastercard using your Curve. Please see our FAQs for further details.

We hope you choose to stay with us to continue the exciting journey we’ve begun together. Please write to me directly – I’m happy to answer any questions you might have.

I’ll keep you updated.

Yours,

Shachar Bialick

  • Bob says:

Too good to be true, used it all the time with never a problem and extra points real shame, so a question for Raffles… what do you reckon the chances of getting Amex back on board?

  • Johnny Tabasco says:

Well thats Curve done then. They wont recover from this and nor should they be allowed to.

Not going to go as far as calling them scam artsits, but it has all been a bit of con with many false promises.
And the gift of loyalty points for a scheme that doesnt even exist is ridiculous and id wager that the scheme never starts up, in fact id wager Curve will be gone by Halloween.

Shame, but deep down i think we all knew it wasnt going to last and was only a matter of time. Ive managed to add about 2k worth of Virgin Flying Club points from day to day spending this past month so for the £35 feel its been worth it i guess but i wont be using it againt past the Bank Holiday weekend and I suspect the same goes for most you all too.

  • Lord Horse says:

Just as an aside, anyone else’s curve been declined on and offline since yesterday? Tried every linked card and makes no difference, online, chip&PIN and ATM all declined…

  • Vol says:

Some very cynical people here. I paid £35 and got a good few points I simply would not have done with the Amex alone. The money’s already spent, it is no longer missed, so I’m going to see what happens next.

    • Will says:

I like your philosophy! I’m convincing myself I paid for my diving on holiday with Curve that worked perfectly well. Though I realise I could have used Amex anyway. I wonder how many transactions will go through before the 31st May to take advantage of the perk.

I think I will keep mine and just see how it plays out. The major issue is reliability though and I don’t think they can fix it overnight.

    • Nathan says:

This is how I feel too.

  • Simon says:

I for one am keeping it. If you have a non amex rewards card you can still withdraw £200 per month and get 1% FX vs 3% FX charges, and hopefully use it for the odd place that accepts debit cards only (appreciate there are some issues with certain places incorrectly identifying it as a credit card).

I hope Amex do return, but still see value to using the card.

    • Simon says:

That’s assuming the card stays open.
Given that a 35 refund is available now I think this option has the greater EV.

  • Jonathan says:

For a business card, £2k transaction limit and £5k monthly limit has really hindered me. I could spend £50k if these ridiculous limits were raised.

  • needroos says:

Has anyone withdrawn more than £200 at the ATM? Worth doing so even with the 2% charge to hit a target?

  • James67 says:

This card looked like a dud from day one, I’m glad I gave it a miss as it has become an even bigger drama than supercard and that’s saying something.

    • Ben says:

How was/is Supercard a drama? I’ve had it since day one and its worked perfectly with a few bugs in the app which were quickly resolved.

    • RTS says:

      Had zero issues with supercard.

      • James67 says:

Ben and RTS mine worked for awhile tine for ATM but never worked anytime anywhere for payments. CS were never able to fix that, nor the ATM issue when that arose. To give them their dues I believe they really tried.
