StatusMatcher – what match can you get from your existing airline and hotel cards?

If you read Head for Points via the website, you may have seen the link to in the ‘I Also Recommend ….’ box.  I thought it was worth giving this site a bit more publicity as it does offer a useful service to regular travellers.

A ‘status match’ is when you approach an airline or hotel company with proof of your high status with a competing airline or hotel group. You then ask to be immediately upgraded to the equivalent level with that company. This is not unreasonable, since it encourages customers to switch brands. People would otherwise be unwilling to give up their status benefits with the other group by starting from scratch with the new company.

Some groups love giving status matches, others don’t. British Airways will almost never status match, unless your company signs a major deal with them or you have a relationship with an overseas office.

Frequent flyer cards

I have written about specific matches on Head for Points in the past.  Turkish Airlines has, over the past couple of years, been the most generous in offering matches of the major airlines.  I obtained a Star Alliance Gold card for myself via Turkish a few years ago although they are not currently matching on the same terms.

The point of StatusMatcher is to provide a central point where people can report successful or failed status matches. It then gives other readers a feel for who it is worth approaching.

As has become more established, the data has become more reliable and more up to date.  You tend to need a decent level of feedback on any particular programme before you can ascertain a trend.

There is never a guarantee that a particular airline or hotel chain will match you even if it matched someone else.  On the other hand, if you have a number of flights booked with an airline then you might be successful where someone else failed.  Despite this, StatusMatcher does give you useful guidance.

  1. Barry cutters says:

Right I’m ba gold. – what can I get? Virgin only offered me instant silver plus a match to their top tier once I’d completed 2 upper class flights.

  2. Pity AirBerlin have stopped matching, flying ba in a couple of weeks and would have been nice to match the Alitalia or GulfAir Gold for lounge access.

    • Alan C says:

Thanks to HFP I have the Alitalia Freccia Alata and Gulf Air Gold both finishing March 2017. Any matching tips?

      • I should have added that i have a couple of upcoming EDI to DXB flights with Qatar.

  3. James A says:

I matched my BA silver to Alitalia Freccia Alata. (Skyteam elite plus) and Avianca Brazil Amigo gold (Star gold). Have all the alliances covered until March 17

    • Was your Avianca match last year? I can’t seem to find a current *A Gold match and have a couple of flights coming up with Air Canada later in the year – would save me C$50 in checked bag fees!

  4. I decided to try a match with Hilton as I’m Platinum in the GHA Discovery / Omni Select Guest, and thought they might match me to Hilton Gold. However they’ve given me Diamond which I’m very happy with, although it only seems to be until the end of this year as it my account says I need 26 stays to retain diamond in 2017! I’ll never manage that but will try and get a few stays in throughout the rest of this year.

    • Hilton accounts always seem to just show the current year, even when the Diamond Desk have confirmed 2018 – worth dropping them an email to confirm.
