Review: the new Hilton Tallinn Park hotel (Part 2)

Here is part 2 of my review of the new Hilton Tallinn Park hotel in Estonia. In part 1 of my review which you can read here I focused on the hotel rooms and suites. Part 2 is about the restaurant, spa and executive lounge.

To give you an impression of the hotel surroundings, here is a picture where you can see part of Portiseiad Park right outside the hotel. It’s a lovely small park with playground, skate park, water fountains and lots of benches.

The hotel sits between the old town and the fast developing urban city of Tallinn.  Meelis Press Architects came up with the arc shaped mirror design which reflects the sunlight and the sky and which was planned to fit into its environment as well as a 200 room hotel can.

Executive Lounge

The 11th floor is the Executive Floor with executive rooms and the lounge.  If you have Hilton HHonors Diamond status (and the status match is still running) you will automatically receive access.  If you don’t, you should consider booking a suite or Executive room as the additional cost is modest.  In the pricing example I gave in part 1, it was only €70 difference between a standard room and a suite with lounge access.

Thanks to its large window front the lounge is very bright and inviting. The interior design elements create a very cosy atmosphere and it almost feels like being in a friend’s house:

Most importantly they were happy to put on the football for me to watch Germany beat Ukraine 🙂

To the right was a desk with two iMacs and a printer. If you want to use your own laptop in the lounge you won’t like the socket situation. There were just a few and none close to tables (at least I couldn’t find any) so you should charge your laptop in the room before coming to the lounge.

Throughout the day the lounge provides fruit snacks and cereal bars as well as soft drinks and coffee:

If you prefer not to eat breakfast in the restaurant, the lounge offers a good range of hot and cold food.

In the evenings from 5pm – 7pm the lounge serves nibbles and alcohol. I found the selection pretty good. You can have some salad and as you can see in this picture, there were quite a few bites to choose from. The alcoholic drinks included wine, beer and spirits (yes, that is a G&T).

Eforea Spa

The Eforea Spa is on the 2nd floor next the restaurant.  There are four treatment rooms and you can take a look at the treatment menu on the hotel website.   I was offered a free treatment as part of my stay and I tried the hot stone massage which was amazing. After the treatment the beauty therapist made me a nice pot of herbal tea!

There are changing rooms with lockers and you are being provided with a robe and slippers.  You don’t have to change in your room and walk through the hotel in your robe.

The swimming pool was gorgeous and big enough to swim lanes (15m). There was also a jacuzzi to relax in and sun loungers around the pool area. When the weather is good sun loungers on the roof terrace are available for sunbathing.

I personally found the sauna a little bit too hot (100°) – but my Finnish friend will probably laugh at me for saying that. Opposite the sauna is a snow producing machine to recreate the proper ‘sauna and jumping in the snow’ experience. There is also a steam room next to the sauna.

Gym

It was a little bit tricky to get a good picture of the gym, as the room was a bit too bright (floor to ceiling windows). The gym was a good size with enough space between the equipment to avoid annoying other users. It had everything you would expect to find and also had a wooden-ladder-kind-of-thing (someone please tell me its name!) which is apparently the newest ‘must use’ machine. From September you can book private sessions with a personal trainer – who can then explain the ladder thing …..

The Able Butcher restaurant

The Able Butcher is the hotel’s all day dining restaurant with a focus on steak.

It can serve up to 172 guests with tables inside and on the roof terrace.

The restaurant’s kitchen is open and you can see your food being prepared. In the mornings you can have an omelette cooked to order.

The breakfast buffet had everything from cooked breakfast to pastries, fresh fruit and yoghurt to ‘proper’ bread, fish, cheese and cold cuts.

This picture shows the roof terrace in the bird perspective (thanks to Ahto for sending me this picture and the following one). The sun loungers on the left are outside the pool area.

A fountain and plants create a light seperation between the spa area and the outside area of the restaurant on the right.

I was lucky enought to have dinner on the terrace as after a day of rain and hail the sun came out for the last few hours of the day. The porcini tagliatelle weren’t on the menu, but as the restaurant is currently rethinking their menu and planning to introduce Sicilian weeks, you might be able to also enjoy this gorgeous pasta dish.

Desert?  Yes, please!

Meeting Rooms and Ballroom

If you are planning a business trip, the Hilton Tallinn Park has 10 flexible meeting rooms providing space for meetings from 10 people up to 360, offering various sitting arrangements. The ballroom has a 530 capacity and is apparently the largest ballroom in the Baltics. All the meeting rooms are on the first floor and have natural light as well as various options of lighting settings.

Conclusion

I loved the Hilton Tallinn Park. The architectural and interior design give the hotel a fresh, modern look whilst creating a cosy atmosphere.

The rooms are spacious, modern and light with all the necessary amenities like a large desk with sockets, a sofa and a coffee machine (and kettle…).  On top of that the staff were incredible and seemed to really enjoy their jobs.

As the hotel had only opened a few weeks prior to my visit, there were some minor issues like the ‘in hand’ reworking of the restaurant concept.  Other than that, there was no way someone who didn’t know could have guessed that the hotel was still in its very early days.

When the weather is nice the roof terrace is a great place to relax. You don’t necessarily need to leave the hotel as you have got everything from spa with swimming pool and sauna to restaurant under one roof. At the same time the old town is in walking distance.

As a Hilton HHonors redemption, you are looking at 30,000 points per night.  Cash rates are also very reasonable, especially for premium rooms.  If you have Hilton HHonors Diamond you would get guaranteed lounge access which is a definite plus point at this property.

To finish, a bit about Tallinn ……

After having spent a weekend in Tallinn, I highly recommend the city.  Communication won’t be a problem as most people in Tallinn speak English.
