News in brief:

Latest British Airways cost-cutting move announced

I ran the latest list of British Airways service cuts for August recently.  This followed on from the long list of service cuts that were imposed in July.

The first service cut for September has now been revealed.

From 1st September, newspapers will no longer be offered at the gate on short-haul flights returning to London.

They will continue to be available for outbound flights.

New Etihad 10% discount code

Etihad has launched a new 10% discount, SPORTUK.

This is valid on bookings made before 21st August for travel between 1st September and 31st May.  There are black out periods around Christmas and Thanksgiving.

It is valid for London, Manchester and Edinburgh departures in Economy and Business.

It only discounts the base fare, not the taxes, which means that the actual discount will be under 10%.  Flex tickets are not included in the offer.

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards (April 2024)

Etihad Guest does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Etihad Guest miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Etihad Guest miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Etihad Guest mile. The Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it.

OT: Head for Points now appears as “channel no longer available” on Apple News 🙁

    • Rob says:

      This is hopefully temporary.

A few weeks ago I got an automated complaint from Apple about an article. I didnt understand what they were on about so I ignored it. Next thing I know the whole channel is pulled!

I have filed a complaint and hopefully it can get resolved. It is annoying as I was in the middle of upgrading to Apple News Publisher status.

I travelled back from Zurich to London City 2 weeks ago on Club. It was rubbish . There were 6 people in business and I was number 4. After me the other two had no food choice . The tray tables were so sloping that the steward said we’d have to wedge napkins under our trays to keep them from falling on our laps . There were no tissues or loo paper in the bathroom . I had thought the £69 upgrade was worth it but it really wasn’t !
On top of that .. And slightly off topic , my outbound flight was cancelled an hour before , because it wasn’t full enough. They offered me a flight out of Heathrow 36 hours later !! A bit ridiculous when I was only going for the weekend to attend a wedding which I would have missed had I taken their alternative flight. I had to make a mad dash to Gatwick instead and buy an expensive easyjet last minute flight . Two weeks later I am still waiting for a refund from BA and apart from a case number , there’s been no response to my compensation claim . Not impressed

I flew BA BCN to LGW last night in economy, no more sandwich / veggie salad. It’s now peanuts / biscuits / crisps and normal bar service.

What time was the flight? I understood that the cutbacks were for mid morning and afternoon..?

OT – Tesco life insurance reminder. My last set of points posted today so if you signed up when Raffles promoted this last year then yours probably have to ! Time to cancel…

  • Chris Anderson says:

Slightly OT question – is it worth making any complaints about the drops in service to an existing booking that was made before the drops were announced?

I have a booking in First with BA in October that was made at the start of the year, and since then they’ve announced various reductions in service like no blankets on day flights, removal of tasting menu, etc. Feels like I can legitimately claim that I’m not getting the service I was signing up to when I booked, and ask for some sort of compensation.

Just wondering if there’s some small print somewhere stopping me doing this, or even if it’s worth wasting my time on. Any success stories?

  • Go says:

Any thoughts on what BA could cut next!

    • harry says:

With any luck the trolley dollies 50+ whose legs are no longer quite so generous as when they were first recruited! 🙂

      Too many of them IMV.

      • Simon says:

When the get to 40 should they be redeployed as baggage handlers!? Or are you more of a Logans Run kinda chap?

      • Cheshire Pete says:

Yet, these ‘old contracts’ BA cabin crew are undoubtedly what the service is to me. You can tell instantly when you have seasoned crew who know what you expect, and they deliver. Give me them anytime over these not my jobs worth ‘new contract’ staff who’d be better off going to Easyjet or Ryanair to be frank.

        • The_Real_A says:

I completely disagree – the worst service i have received is always from the old timers.

    • James67 says:

The fares hopefully, they are simply outrageous.

  • harry says:

    yep just got the email

  • Daz says:

Since I dragged myself in to the Information Age 6 years ago, I never read or buy papers anymore, even the Metro on the train seems quite a strenuous. And I can’t turn the pages on short haul due to my ever-increasing belly size from eating to much on business flights!

If anything should be cut I would say this. This may stop other things going; then again maybe not being BA.
