News in brief:

Latest British Airways cost-cutting move announced

I ran the latest list of British Airways service cuts for August recently.  This followed on from the long list of service cuts that were imposed in July.

The first service cut for September has now been revealed.

From 1st September, newspapers will no longer be offered at the gate on short-haul flights returning to London.

They will continue to be available for outbound flights.

New Etihad 10% discount code

Etihad has launched a new 10% discount, SPORTUK.

This is valid on bookings made before 21st August for travel between 1st September and 31st May.  There are black out periods around Christmas and Thanksgiving.

It is valid for London, Manchester and Edinburgh departures in Economy and Business.

It only discounts the base fare, not the taxes, which means that the actual discount will be under 10%.  Flex tickets are not included in the offer.

The Etihad website is here.   You can click here to read my reviews of Etihad A380 First Apartment, A380 Business Studio and Boeing 777 First Class.

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards (April 2024)

Etihad Guest does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Etihad Guest miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Etihad Guest miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Etihad Guest mile. The Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it.

OT – have tesco ever had a clubcard points bonus for travel insurance?

  • Steven says:

The BA product is poor, were it not for the Amex 241 voucher and RFS it would not ever be worth flying with them.

For me short haul Europe is now easy jet with easy jet plus and priority pass for lounge access

Long haul there are many better options to BA in economy and business (e.g. AA’s product to NYC in business is vastly superior to BA) – have decided the value of sticking with one airline just to get status is not really worth it these days

    Newspapers…

Are they being removed as a “cost saving” at arrivals or in reality have they simply become a nuisance that are being returned for pulping because so few people are picking them up anymore?

It’s been a while since I’ve had to trek down to the Gates beyond Weatherspoons in Edinburgh, but at one time there was a large display of free newspapers in the lounge area there – oddly enough just a few seconds walk from the WH Smith shop.

They were still there a couple of weeks ago, i regularly take the long walk of shame off down that long corridor. However on this occasion it was a wasted walk as my Ryanair flight left from Gate 1A, at the opposite end of the terminal which meant walking back through the mobbed shopping centre/terminal (for a flight which whose delay went from 10 mins to over 2 hrs, which meant that when they called for the original boarding the plane was still on the tarmac at the original airport).

Not surprises as there is a continued shift to digital.

Talking about enhancements, I have to wonder for how much longer we will get our Domestic hot breakfast for….

    • John says:

It seems that less than half of pax want the hot breakfast on most of my recent morning flights out of LCY….

  • Emily says:

Slightly off topic (or not since it’s a grrrrr BA comment). Just had an email to say a return flight of a trip in November has been cancelled, and we’ve been rebooked onto the following day. I believe I’m entitled to cancel the entire booking, but can’t as hotel non-refundable (and was looking forward to it!).. but am I entitled to any compensation for having to pay for a hotel for the additional night? I know no EU as it’s more than 14 days before, but wondered if there was anything I can do?

  • LEE says:

Just went to the Esso garage with tesco express shop local to me spent the £50 after saving offer to my card , But is coming up as a tesco garage not esso so im guessing i wont be getting £5 from amex rebate ?

    • John says:

Complain to Amex via secure message and they may give it to you anyway. Otherwise find another one without a tesco express

  • Alex W says:

Presumably you can still pick up a newspaper from the Lounge instead?

  • Andrew Stock says:

16:45 LHR to Krakow and 20:55 Krakow to LHR was a tiny packet of crisps only for a 2 hrs 20 mins flight.

    • harry says:

      that’s pretty bad

you should have had the sandwich + dessert bun (there’s a veggie option) + ample booze
