Review: Melia’s new INNSiDE New York NoMad hotel

This is my review of Melia’s new INNSiDE New York NoMad hotel.

New York, I love you!   As my friend was getting married in the States this summer, I decided to combine the wedding with a New York trip and, as you do, review two hotels and two airlines on the way.

First stop was in Midtown at Melia’s new INNSiDE New York NoMad.

If you have an American Express Platinum card, you will have Melia Rewards Gold status and some 20% discount vouchers which makes this a good option for your next New York trip.

For clarity, the hotel provided me with three complimentary nights including breakfast buffet.  We paid all of our other costs.

Where is INNSiDE New York NoMad?

After the brand’s success in Europe this property is the first INNSiDE in the US and only opened in spring this year.  Rob reviewed the first UK INNSiDE when it opened in Manchester last year.

Located in Midtown on 27th West, the location is great for exploring Manhattan.  Three subway stations are between 3 – 6 minutes away and Times Square is in walking distance (it took me about 20 minutes – you may not want to be much closer!).

The hotel has 313 rooms including 8 suites and 3 terrace suites with views of the Empire State Building.

I flew into Newark late in the evening on La Compagnie (my review of that flight is here) and took a taxi from the aiport which was $85.

The design of the hotel is contemporary and fresh. I loved the yellow sofas in the bar area.

Check in

Check in was quick and the girls who were working at reception were very helpful and really knew the area.  This was great as I made good use of their tips.

The room

My room was a 230 sq feet Queen Guestroom.

The room follows many of the trends we have seen in recent HfP reviews.  The wardrobe had no doors and only a few hangers and two small drawers, which meant I didn’t get to fully unpack my suitcase.  As I was only staying 3 nights this wasn’t a big issue. The lowest shelf bottom right in the picture below would fit a standard sized suitcase, which is useful in such a small room – mine however was a little bit too big.

The desk was quite small, but so is my laptop.   At least there was a desk which is getting rarer in new hotels!  There was a socket (hidden behind the TV manual) and the desk chair was comfortable.

The room layout is pretty simple and practical. This is a picture taken from the door with the bathroom to the right and the bedroom at the back.

The rooms at the INNSiDE New York NoMad don’t have a mini bar, but there was a small fridge with complimentary water, fizzy drinks and juice. There was a Nespresso machine with 4 capsules (2 decaf, 2 regular) but no kettle in the room.

As there was no socket anywhere near the Nespresso machine, I ended up using the one inside the safe, which was unusual but did the job.

The bathroom wasn’t the biggest, but the shower was great with a rainfall and a hand held shower head and good water pressure.

The sink was a good size, however water kept getting onto the area around the tap and the amenities kit was soaking wet after having washed my hands once.

Usually those shampoo and shower geld bottles attached to the shower wall are not my thing.  These were brilliant, however, as the Sampar products protect your skin and hair against the city’s pollution – shame they were attached and I couldn’t bring them home …..

The view from my window was the backside of the houses in the parallel street with their fire escapes and roof terraces. As there wasn’t a road outside my window, the room was super quiet.

Dining and drinking

Breakfast was being served in the ground floor restaurant/bar opposite the reception area. It didn’t look like a lot, but there was bread, all kind of pastries (fresh from a local bakery), cooked vegetables, scrambled egg, cheese and cold cuts. Included in the breakfast buffet was also coffee en masse and the option to order pancakes.

You can either eat your breakfast outside on the terrace (yes, the hotel has its own outdoor terrace, a rarity in New York) or inside.

On the lower ground is the Italian restaurant Impero Caffè. I didn’t get to eat there and can’t say anything about the food.

Gym

The gym was a good size with all the key machines and an outdoor area where you can do yoga or pilates on provided mats. Thanks to the large windows the room was very bright.

The INNSIDE New York also has two meeting rooms. There is one standard room with table and chairs and one room for creatives that reminded me a bit of WeWork work spaces.

Conclusion

I didn’t plan to spend much time in my hotel room as I had too much on my to-see list and for that purpose the size of the room was ok. The bed was very comfortable and the shower great. With two people and two suitcases the room might have got a bit cramped, but as I was travelling on my own it was perfectly fine.

The lack of a kettle might be a problem for some (!) and the size of the desk could be an issue with larger laptops. However the downstairs bar is serving tea and has got larger tables where people were working during the day.

I didn’t get to see any of the other rooms or suites, but if you look at the website you can find a variety of options.  The rooms higher up seem to have a great view over Manhattan.

I liked the INNSiDE New York NoMad and I think you would too if you are looking for a new, contemporary hotel in a good location at a fair price.  I would definitely stay there again.
