News in brief:

American Express launches new cashback deals

A new wave of Amex cashback offers launched this week.

Some, all or none of these will be available for registration under the ‘Offers’ tab of your online statement.

Offers marked ‘Connect’ appear on the Amex Connect site where you can register MBNA, Lloyds or Barclays-issued American Express cards.

The new travel offers available across my cards are:

Transport for London – 10 bonus Avios or Membership Rewards points for every £2 charged to your card before 6th November. In theory this only applies to contactless transactions.  We need to see if it works for season tickets.

Mandarin Oriental – £100 back on £550 spend in London, Paris, Barcelona or Geneva, expires 6th December

Eurostar (Connect) – £20 back on £60 spend, expires 16th October (you could book a return ticket as 2 x one-ways if you had two cards which qualify for the offer)

Heathrow Express (Connect) – £10 back on £50 spend, expires 11th December, valid for unlimited number of transactions

These older offers are still running:

Hilton – £50 back on £250 spend at participating hotels only, expires 30th November

Rocco Forte Hotels – £100 back on £400 spend in London or Brussels, expires 30th October

Hyatt – £100 back on £500 spend at participating European hotels, expires 30th September

Emirates – £100 back on £800 spend, expires 6th November

Trailfinders – £200 back on £1,000 spend, expires 30th September

Sofitel / MGallery / Pullman – £30 back on £250 spend at participating hotels, expires 21st October, would double up with the current generous Accor promotion

Holiday Extras (Connect) – 15% cashback, expires 2nd October

Virgin Atlantic takes action to stop Clubhouse overcrowding

We wrote last month about Delta’s decision to move all of its Heathrow Terminal 4 flights into Heathrow Terminal 3 from yesterday.

This is great news for Delta flyers who will now have access to the acclaimed Virgin Clubhouse lounge (and it is pretty good as I reviewed here).

It was bad news for Virgin Atlantic travellers, who risked seeing their beloved lounge overrun with passengers from an additional 11 flights per day.

Delta has now taken action to reduce the impact of this.

Diamond and Platinum Medallion cardholders will no longer be allowed Clubhouse access.  They will sent to the No 1 Lounge in Terminal 3 instead.  I reviewed the No 1 Lounge in Terminal 3 here.

This is bad news for Priority Pass passengers who use the No Lounge because the influx of Delta passengers will mean far fewer spaces available for ‘walk up’ Priority Pass guests.

Like it or not, if you want to guarantee No 1 Lounge access in Terminal 3 with your Priority Pass, you may need to stump up £5 to reserve a space in advance.

Diamond and Platinum Medallion Delta cardholders will continue to get access to the Virgin Atlantic arrivals lounge.

United 350

50% bonus when you convert IHG Rewards Club points to United MileagePlus

United Airlines is offering a 50% bonus when you convert IHG Rewards Club points into your United MileagePlus account.

The offer runs until 10th October.  You need to register before making the transfer on the United website here.

Airline miles are not the best use of IHG points due to the 5:1 conversion rate.  I tend to value IHG points at 0.4p each which means that, at the normal conversion rate, you are giving up 2p of free hotel room to receive 1 airline mile.  This is not good value.

Under this offer, you are giving up 1.33p of hotel room for every mile you receive.  This is closer to fair value but still expensive in my book.

You need to take a broader view, however.  If you collect United MileagePlus miles and live in the UK, your options are limited.  There is a United credit card – with NO sign-up bonus – but that is about it.  The conversion rate from Starwood Preferred Guest is weaker than other airline schemes and they are not an American Express partner.

On that basis, if you have a large pile of IHG points you may find this an easy option to top up your United balance.

If you use your Amex for contactless TFL payments I suggest registering your Amex in your Online Oyster account with TFL as I have twice been charged more than the daily cap when using contactless. TFL always refund but only if you phone and ask. By registering you can see the journeys you have been charged for, you can’t see this on your credit card account.

    • John says:

You don’t have to register but if you don’t you only have 7 days to check your journey history on the TfL site.

  • Tilly71 says:

Anything useful to use UA miles on instead of flights?

    • John says:

Nope, a few years ago you could redeem for hotels, paypal or convert to other miles at points.com but this doesn’t work any more

      • Brian says:

Worth noting, though, that United redemptions have minimal taxes. I priced up Vienna to Washington for a friend yesterday – good availability in business, flying with Austrian direct, for 74K miles plus £64.50 taxes. Significantly better than either M&M or Avios.

  • kt74 says:

I have even better offers in my Amex account this morning:
    1. Return of £1 back for every £3 spent at Starbucks
    2. £200 back for £1k spend at Trailfinders – for your next paid long haul J ticket (hmmm, do they issue ex-EU fares I wonder…)
    3. £10 for £50 spent on the Heathrow Express website. Meh, not for me, but someone else might find useful…

    • kt74 says:

Oops, just saw your Trailfinders and HEx references above… OK, well the Starbucks one is new. Enjoy your Pumpkin Spiced Lattes, everyone!

    • Rob says:

Starbucks must be new today or very targetted.

    • @mkcol says:

Anyone know if I book eg: Hilton via Trailfinders will I get my status acknowledged & points awarded? Was thinking a £1000 gift card could be useful.

      • @mkcol says:

Scrap that – just re-read the T&C and gift cards are excluded. Drat.

        • harry says:

          Amex won’t know

          • Axel Heyst says:

Is that you volunteering to spend £1k as the seasoned hfp guinea pig Harry?

I don’t think trailfinders (or any sensible business) would offer single gift vouchers of such a high value. More likely there will be a limit of say £200 on the amount and the option to buy again as a separate transaction.

          • harry says:

            Could be cumulative?

Nope, no guinea pigging from me 🙂

          • roger says:

Pls. report back if anyone is going down this giftcard route.

      • Alan says:

Be very wary of Trailfinders and hotels – definitely no credit from Accor booking, apparently it was made on some ‘special offer’ rate, despite the amount we paid being identical to the hotel website rate – suspect Trailfinders were pocketing the difference and the lower rate was then ineligible for hotel status/points credit.

        • Alex W says:

But Accor are the biggest scrooges going, so I wouldn’t use them as a benchmark.

          • Alan says:

Perhaps, but plenty of other schemes are difficult with TA bookings – I’m just pointing out that if you’re planning to prepay your hotel with Trailfinders you can’t be certain of getting credit (vs pay at checkout)

          • Rob says:

IHG won’t give you anything on rooms more than 30% off Best Flex, Accor will give you points on £25 Happy Mondays rooms ….

  • Philip Walsh says:

I just checked my platinum card for the TFL offer, this is the card that I always tap in and out with. Sadly the offer is not available for me on the card I use most. Oddly enough it is on my Gold card!

It seems that it is only available for contactless pay as you go, so you might find that buying a season ticket will result in no extra points.

    • Arun T says:

Similar story – (but the other way round) not available on my Amex Gold card where all my TFL spend is, but on my BA standard Amex. Was going to cancel my BA Amex, but may keep this for the extra month as all my TFL spend is PAYG

  • Oh! Matron! says:

The banning of Delta form the lounge is a wonderful thing. It added so much cachet to Delta with no reciprocity (Delta lounges != Virgin Clubhouse).

I wonder if this is a response to how much negative feedback they’ve had?

My comments on renes points got mediated out yesterday (which was similar to the above, with the exception of suggesting that Delta was the poorer (product and image) brother to Virgin)

  • Justin says:

Have found it increasingly more difficult to just turn up and use the No1 Lounges at both LGW and LHR with my PP. Have taken to prebooking a glass of Champagne for £7 to guarantee entry plus the ability to use the Premium Security at LGW is a bonus too.

    • harry says:

Sounds like a plan – effectively only £2/ glass.

I might get a funny look when I roll up with my 15 YO son for our 2 glasses of Champers 🙂

      • Alan says:

Lol probably not if he looks old enough, we’re not in the USA 😉 (I still remember the shock there of getting ID’d in a restaurant when having meal aged 30!)

    • David2910 says:

How far in advance does ‘pre-booking’ need to be? If I turn up and get rejected, can I stand right there and pre-book on my mobile? I recall once trying to book cheaper lounge access on my way to the airport (perhaps through holiday extras) and it declined due to booking same date. But on the main no.1 website booking a champagne is possible?

  • Graham Walsh says:

I have the TfL offer on my Amex Gold. Just activated and tapped in. Will see at the end of the day what points it gives.

  • Jonathan says:

No TFL offer on my Amex Preferred Rewards Gold Card, been using it everyday on TFL network 🙁
