Following on from my story on Saturday that British Airways is training cabin crew to sell ‘buy on board’ food on short haul – but only after they sign a confidentiality agreement – the Daily Mail reported on Sunday that British Airways has signed a deal with Marks & Spencer to sell food onboard.

As I wrote on Saturday, this can hardly be worse than the current situation where a mini bag of crisps is considered to be a ‘snack’.

I would take the article with a pinch of salt (5p per sachet, probably) in some areas.  Whilst it may be true that “executives believe holidaymakers are increasingly prepared to pay for extras if ticket prices are lower”, it is also true that holidaymakers make up a minority of BA passengers and very definitely a minority of short-haul revenue.

And you will see that BA says: “Everything we do is with our customers in mind and we will make changes that reflect their feedback’ …….

In terms of implementation, it genuinely isn’t clear.  I have heard:

that Gatwick will get it first, but also that it will hit the entire fleet at once

that BA elite members will get their food and drink for free, but also that everyone will have to pay

that Club Europe meals will be scrapped in return for a free sandwich and drink, but also that Club Europe food will remain as it is

So, basically, there is no clarity.  Plenty of fun and games ahead I think.

      Last time I went economy the snack was an iced bun and another bun with a piece of cheese, great if your into having a load of simple carbs, real world value about 50p. Can’t wait for real options!

    I can’t see this working on short haul domestics. It seems tight now to dish out drinks & snack on the NCL route – having to take payment as well esp if the plane is full? I think the downstairs Smiths at NCL is going to be a lot busier in the future…

        London to Paris/Brussels/Amsterdam are in fact even shorter.

        But for a flight time of sometimes only thirty minutes, I don’t really see the need for food or drink, particularly if there are food (be vending machines) in/connected to the departure lounge.
        After all, one would hardly expect food on JER-GCI !

      As I sit in the Valldemossa VIP lounge in Palma on what is very definitely a non-business route I would be very hard pushed to stuff anything edible in my hand luggage for the flight! Hoping that being in J on City Flyer to LCY might mean something to eat. I’m not going to get very far on the one remaining chocolate donut.

        I had a frustrating changeover in AMS once. I was so annoyed at the lounge situation after missing a connection and then being on the wrong side of security for the lounge I wanted to use. After a LONG walk to a KLM lounge there was NO hot food and no portable snacks or drinks! in desperation I grabbed some pretzels and wrapped them in a napkin. Then I had a 30 second visit to another louge with my PP from Amex Plat, to grab a bottle of water. Then KLM tried to force me to check my hand luggage, waving status card did not work! In the end the napkin burst and I had a pocket full of pretzels. Safe to say I will avoid connections in AMS (and CDG for that matter).

          The main KLM/Skyteam lounge on the upper level is excellent. More of a Lufty man myself, but AMS Skyteam lounge knocks spots of the Biz lounges in FRA or MUC. Loads of space/booze/snacks and least 3 different hot options, plus separate smokers part. Very nice space indeed. Nod to Rob for the insite on getting my Alitalia gold card for this.

    BA has lost my loyalty to a great extent and this will be the icing on the cake. Options such as Agean, TURKISH etc will now make far more sense

      If you go to only Greece or turkey. Yes . But for me I need a program which can travel to the major city’s such as Zurich, Basel, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Munich, Paris, madrid, Warsaw, Oslo, Stockholm. Combine that with the fact I need to travel to north America regularly, and we now have Qatar for any trips to Asia, ba and one world will not lose any loyalty from me.
      As for the topic in hand . Most sensible people will agree this is a great move for ba .

      It makes perfect sense really. The market is now driven by price, whether you’re a business pax or leisure passenger (indeed business passengers on expenses are far more likely to buy food on board IME, or indeed hat something at the airport so not need food on board), so it makes sense to offer what people want. Low flight prices, with the option of a variety of food if you need it.

      OK. If you do end up taking this to court and are successful in suing BA, I will buy you a biscuit. But only 1. After all, that’s all you are suing for. Or maybe a very small bag of crisps. Your choice of either.

    Just checked out my usual twice a year Club Europe route to Sofia on the new beta BA website does not mention free food and drink in either Euro Traveller or Club Europe! Does this mean that you now have to buy on board in both classes? No reduction in the CE ticket price though which is a bit criminal if there’s a sever reduction in service. Bye bye BA short haul.

      I’m not even on the beta – I’m using the standard BA booking form, just collecting a few screenshots in case I need them to get my free food & booze – and for September 2017 the offer of free food/ booze has disappeared. It’s still there for October 2016 – I haven’t checked all the months yet but might very well do that.

        Got it back again! by going on the Ukraine version of BA site ‘Complimentary onboard food and bar service’

        there’s also another useful one to screenshot when you are starting the search – ‘BA won’t charge you for Drink & snacks Allocated seat at check-in Hand baggage’

        How are they going to cope with people who have bought as far ahead as September 3rd 2017 (the harries 🙂 ) when the rest of the plane will have bought their tickets mostly after 1 October 2016? – which is when I deduce the new buy on board system comes in

            BA will have to work out a system to honour the T&Cs of tickets sold before buy on board starts. There will be many of us – they carried 41 million passengers in 2015 so I guess if B-O-B starts next month, there will be at least a couple of million economy travellers in Europe potentially deprived of their free snack & drink.

            A small claims court claim only costs £25 to initiate (which you’d get back as well as money to the value of your missing sustenance).

            But it won’t come to that, of course. BA will presumably find a way to give people in this position a voucher for (say) a sandwich & 2 drinks. This wouldn’t look odd or unfair to other passengers who buy their tickets after 1 October.

            Food or type of food is not in the T&Cs of your ticket. They can change/remove it and not have to compensate you. Having said that if you really want the current ET food consisting of crisps or a biscuit in bands 1-3, it may still be on offer when you fly.

            Balderdash – as I posted above, BA overtly make much of the free drinks & food – there are whole pages on ba.com devoted to it – it’s part of their marketing proposition. That’s what you are buying.

            You wouldn’t expect details of food & drink to be in the T&Cs – same as you wouldn’t expect the specification of a computer to be in the T&Cs when you buy a PC from PCWorld. But if PCWorld offered (say) a 5 year warranty on the page describing the deal, then when your PC goes phut after 3 years and you ask them to repair or replace it & they turn round and say sorry harry, we changed our warranties to 1 year so you’re not getting it repaired or replaced – you would rightly be in a strong position to get the law to sort it out.

            Provided you have some proof, hence the screenshots.

            BA can most definitely not remove an important element of the offering without compensating you or offering a fair solution, such as vouchers.

            Who? Me? I never intimated that this was at all likely, quite the opposite.

            BA will issue me vouchers for drinks & a snack whilst other (later booking) passengers will have to pay.

          Stop kicking off. Do you really think ba are going to stop giving you a sandwich if they are currently still advertising it. Currently all we know is they are going to do buy on board . We dont know when. What likely will happen is they will start bob in the first few months of the year and will issue a voucher or something foe thosse that are entitled. Otherwise they might just make it free up untill Jan 1st 18 or something similar. Wait for ba to announce what they are doing first before you start accusing them of robbery

            They are changing terminals and have to make their own lounge available for virgin. you still get somewhere to sit, food and unlimited free drinks.

            I know why. I’m presuming it wasn’t a surprise to BA as these things are usually planned well in advance. They could therefore have warned about a severely reduced lounge service but chose not to. Instead they sold tickets knowing that their usual lounge offer wouldn’t be available. They also decided not to compensate people for this reduction in service. I would humbly suggest they may take the same approach with BOB.

            It was a very good lounge before being swamped with BA guests and will no doubt revert to being a very good lounge when BA move out. It will be interesting to see if it busier or not with easyJet in the terminal.

            Which is the bigger number?

            % of easyJet passengers with a Priority Pass etc card, or
            % of BA passengers with a Priority Pass etc card but who do not have BA status or are travelling in a premium cabin (as they would historically have gone to the BA lounge)

            ‘Not substandard’. Dirty, overcrowded, one tiny portion of food, queue for thimble size drinks, terrible wi-fi.

            But the point, for this thread, is that BA knew this would happen and chose not to tell anyone before the event or compensate them afterwards.

            It would have been relatively easy to provide vouchers for use in the airport – and certainly easier than compensating people for BOB.

            You may think they will compensate people for the loss of free food and drink. I would suggest this is very unlikely – whether you care or not is up to you.

      There doesn’t need to be a price decease. Service cuts in lieu of a price increase is a perfectly logical way of operating.
