BREAKING: British Airways ‘buy on board’ menu published

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Now showing on ba.com …… full analysis tomorrow. The obvious question seems to be ‘Where is Colin the Caterpillar?’.

Note that:

“Club Europe (short-haul business class) customers will continue to be offered a full, complimentary menu, which is being improved and revamped from spring 2017 as part of the changes to short-haul catering. Further details will be released on the changes nearer the time.”

London City and Stansted flights will retain free food and snacks until next Summer. Despite rumours, there is no word on free items for status passengers.

This is a cut and paste from the website:

London Heathrow and London Gatwick

From 11 January, we’re upgrading our food offering in our short haul economy cabins (Euro Traveller and UK Domestic) on flights to and from London Heathrow and London Gatwick.

We’re proud to be partnering with Marks & Spencer, another iconic British brand, to offer you a new ‘M&S on board’ menu that will replace the complimentary service currently provided. You will be able to select from the seasonally inspired menu and buy your food and drinks in one easy transaction.

  • Nick says:

I flew JFK-LHR BAin economy on Monday night..it killed me.. Just before we landed we were offered a cake/muffin in a plastic wrapper and a cuppa tea/coffee.. I was so hungry..

All short haul I do in economy from now onwards will mean I will be eating food from the lounges.

    • Hugh says:

i flew in on Sunday night, upstairs in CW – it wasn’t much better, other than they took the plastic wrapper off before serving –

  • AA says:

I fully suspect cans of drinks in lounges to change into dispensers and packs of crisps to turn into bowls soon. Until then, it’s just asking for an empty bag to turn into a full bag in the lounge. No more status runs from me!

    • Ben says:

I definitely think any bottle of water in lounges will disappear as obviously people are going to take a bottle onboard to avoid buying one. Crisps in a bowl are a hygiene nightmare though.

      • Alex W says:

BA lounges don’t do any small bottles of water already, for some reason. Very annoying.

  • Matt says:

Is there any sign of what they’re doing for people who bought flights with the promise of free food and drink after Jan the 11th?

    Just hoping no-one notices?

    • Hugh says:

from Simon Calder at The inderpendent

Q What about people with bookings that they made on the basis of BA’s previous promise that: “Whenever and wherever you are travelling we offer a complimentary snack or meal and bar service.”

Tough. The airline is writing to such people, which include me, saying that if we were expecting free food and drink we should adjust our expectations.

      • Genghis says:

That can’t be right. BA advertised free drinks and snacks heavily on their website as part of the offering. People bought BA flights (and not on – another – LCC) potentially on that basis. I’m not affected but if I was I’d be fighting my corner.

The Cruzade of the Cruzification of BA continues (poor, I know)

    • Rob says:

      Emails going out apparently ….

  • Simon says:

Plenty of people who earn a small amount avios from the flight will just pay with those and end up no worse off…. I welcome the better quality of food.

    • Simmo says:

Can you imagine the crew explaining to people that the points they will earn on the flight won’t be available to use for anothe 4-5 days!

  • Damien says:

Well, congrats BA… you’ve just broke the camels back. Honestly don’t see the point in BA anymore.

    * “No interlining bags on separate tickets” .
    * Poor business product.
    * Ridiculous fees on Avios business redemptions make booking with BA pretty pointless too.
    * Now there’s no longer free drinks on board Europe flights.

I’m at a loss to define BAs unique selling point anymore. If you have your priority pass… then why bother. I’m just glad all my domestic BA flights end in Jan 3rd. I used to get my company to book these even though it is more convenient to fly from City…. feck that….

  • Jason Hindle says:

No more free BAcon butty on the morning flight :-(.

  • CV3V says:

Best paid for catering on a flight? Air Asia, curry and a drink for about £2.50 and really tasty.

I dont really care about short haul catering, but that therefore means i dont care whether its BA or easyjet, I’ll go with the cheapest (Easyjet).

  • Chris Jones says:

    Hi All

Surely they have to offer drinks and food to anybody who purchases a ticket prior to today.

The alternative is that they will get a block lawsuit its like PPI miss-selling!

I’ll be moving away from BA unless they start to compete on price.

    Chris

    • Ben says:

A reasonable compromise/solution would be to include a £5 voucher to anyone who has already booked a flight, to be used on that flight only. Some people wouldnt bother to use the voucher or would forget but that should appease most people.
The idea of taking someone to court over a missing bag of crisps is hilarious.

      • Andrew says:

        Sprit+mixer+water+cheapest sandwich = £10.80.
If it’s a return flight then that individual’s losses are £21.60

I don’t fly very much but still have 3 return flights booked meaning that BA have removed £130 of value from my family’s flights.

Might not be worth a lawsuit but I’d expect to be able to cancel and get a refund without any penalties if I was so inclined.

        • Leo says:

Really you would cancel over a sandwich?

          • Brian W says:

Leo, not sure I’d agree that he said he would cancel over a sandwich did he? I thought he said it was about the reduction in the value of his tickets of about £130 value. I’ve never bought a sandwich for £130, have you?

Reckon Harry (or the now Harry1) is busy putting his battle plan together to protect the £480 loss in value he mentioned a few weeks back, not eight BLT’s each for his family.

I fly weekly from Scotland to Heathrow and dont pay a penny for a hot breakfast and coffee on the way down and a beer and popcorn on the way home after a long couple of days. How much do you think this ‘upgrade’ will cost me annually? More than 208 slices of bread with an M&S filling by my calculations!
