  Even with 5,000 points a night, does it worth the risk with the very unstable political status in the country?

    I was there for 11 days over Easter and travelled around the country. Very fascinating, especially Cappadocia and Pamukkale. Would I go if I had booked a holiday there ages ago? Yes. Would I actively book a holiday there now? Probably not.

      I had a holiday booked before the Gedi park riots in Istanbul a couple of years back and went anyway.
      We were tear gassed three times (while lying next to the hotel pool, in restaurants, walking along streets) and kept awake often with people banging saucepans out of their windows. It was absolutely fascinating to see, we never felt in danger and the rioters and police never actually did anything to us apart from the gas.
      But no, even at 5,000 points a night I won’t be back anytime soon.

    I have been in Turkey 3 times this year … Holiday and two transits.

    If you stayed out of the U.K. when the IRA were running their murder campaign then stay out of Turkey. I guess.

    I will happily go back except to the very high risk areas eg near the Surian border.

    I am more worried about my safety if the TSA have a brainstorm when I go into the USA with an entire page of Turkish stamps and nothing else !

      Agreed.

      South Africa during apartheid rightly avoided by many to shame regime but in the initial uncertain aftermath perceived disruption and/or heightened risk to residents and tourists alike similarly overblown.

  The IB offer is a real con !!! Throughout the whole of Nov there are tickets readily available MAN-MAD for £27, incl all taxes etc confirmed ! And of course you earn Avios on these fares too ! I’m assuming it’s similar for flights from LGW & BHX too !

  Erzican and Van are in eastern Turkey. Unless you have a specific reason to go there, you shouldn’t really go there as a tourist even if they give you 50,000 points. Not saying they are not safe, these are just tiny cities with no tourist attractions whatsoever

    Van is a wonderful place to visit as a tourist…it’s only 15 minutes from Akdamar Island in Van lake which is surrounded by a backdrop of stunning snowcapped mountains. The castle at Van is also good to look around and offers unparalleled views across the lake and city towards the mountains. I think Van is well worth a 24-48 hour visit if you’re already visiting Turkey and looking for something a little different; I really cannot rate it high enough!

      Well said. As for Erzincan, it’s one of the ugliest towns in Turkey, hours from anywhere, and has nothing for the conventional tourist. God knows why Hilton decided to build there. The standard room rate seems to be about £25-£30 so it may not even be a great use of points.

  Glad I stayed at Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh Caledonian this summer before the price went up! Though for festival prices, still good value for your points. Very nice hotel. Good location, but not brilliant for proximity to festival venues. Might try crowne plaza next year.
