New promo: earn 1,000 Avios in BA and avios.com for collecting with a new partner

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Avios.com and British Airways Executive Club both launched an interesting new promotion yesterday which could get you 1,000 Avios in each scheme.

Full details are here on avios.com.

You will receive 1,000 Avios if, between now and 21st November, you earn Avios from a partner you have not previously earned from since 3rd October 2015.

Each programme has its own exclusions and rules:

avios.com

The obvious rule which might trip you up is ‘Flight partners’.  These are treated as one partner.  If you have credited a BA flight to avios.com in the last year, crediting an Iberia flight will NOT trigger the bonus.

Similarly, Avios e-store shopping is treated as one partner, irrespective of which retailer you used.

The following are excluded: “Purchase, Gift or Transfers of Avios; Survey Partners (E-rewards, Reward for Thoughts, Survey Sampling International); Member Get Member (MGM) referrers; Shell Drivers’ Club; Avios awarded for refer a friend”

If you have a Household Account, the account will only earn the bonus once irrespective of the number of account members who use a new partner.

So, how can you trigger the avios.com bonus?

The easiest options are either a Tesco Clubcard transfer or a TopCashback transfer.  The latter is what I will be doing, I think, with the smallest transfer I can manage – which will be the size of the smallest cashback item waiting to be paid.  I am certain I have not transferred to avios.com in the last year.

Crediting a BA flight is fine – unless you have BA status, in which case you will lose your status bonus which will cost you Avios.

Heathrow Rewards points transfers are also an easy option.

British Airways Executive Club

The same restrictions apply as for avios.com.  In particular, earning from flying counts as one partner so using a different airline is not good enough.

The same merchants are excluded.

Hotel partners are NOT grouped together so if you have transferred from one hotel scheme this year you CAN transfer from another and trigger the bonus.  If you are a top tier Starwood Preferred Guest member, the minimum airline transfer is just 1 point.

Personally, I will either do a Tesco Clubcard transfer (I need to check if I have done one in the last year) or move the minimum 1,000 American Express Membership Rewards points across.  That will do the trick.  Heathrow Rewards is another possibility.  Most people will find TopCashback the easiest although I have already done that this year.

Most of us should be able to earn 1,000 Avios in each scheme easily enough, especially as there are 6 weeks to manage it.

Note that the deadline for awarding you your 1,000 bonus Avios is 31st January, so don’t do this if you need the points to post quickly.

  • Andrew H says:

When are we likely to get these 1000 avios? Could it be next year?

  • Neil says:

Thanks for this. I have just started using the BA Amex card. Will the first transfer to points count for this offer?

    • Red says:

As far as I’m aware with the BA Amex, as I’ve only had one myself for a short while. Amex transfer the points across automatically.

      • Red says:

Hit reply too soon….. My thinking is as this is automatic it won’t count.

    • Liz says:

It explains it in the terms and conditions – I was planning on applying soon – if u get accepted in the promotion period as long as you get pts awarded by 31/12 it counts – if you already have a BAPP and not had any pts credited yet then any new pts awarded would count and the bonus paid.Think that is correct.

    • bryan says:

I think it will as will be the first time you collect with that partner

  • Andreas says:

no, all shops are considered one partner.

  • Rob says:

You only earn the bonus once on total. The same partner can trigger Avios.com and BA.

  • NJ says:

OT – just noticed HSBC premier have a 50% transfer bonus. Not very well advertised but if you hang around on the My Accounts page long enough it appears

    • Doug says:

is it the main page or the credit card account page? can’t find it anywhere….

      • GEORGE says:

        same here
        any luck?!

        • Ricardo says:

I spotted it too but then couldn’t find it again. It appears as an ad at the top of the My Accounts page – but one of several, so reload the My Accounts page several times to get a different ad/offer and eventually it reappears.

      • Rob says:

It is there, covering it tomorrow.

  • Sue says:

I have collected points in my BAEC A/C through most partners so wasnt sure how I would do this. So I clicked through to insurance (which Ive not collected through before) and bought the cheapest 1 day, uk, single person travel insurance for about 4 quid. That was the only way I could potentially get the 1000 points. So if it does post the points they work out very cheap! Cant think what to do with my avios a/c though….??

  • czechoslovakia says:

I think i read in the T&Cs somewhere there is a limit of 1x 1000 bonus per avios/baec account, or only 1x 1000 bonus per family account.

    • czechoslovakia says:

and its the question if the hotel posted the points back in time too.

  • czechoslovakia says:

Same problem here, solved by moving the last digit to the third box. Went through ok then and the email confirmation showed my avios number correctly (as one long number).
