News in brief:

100% bonus when you buy Hilton HHonors points extended

Hilton HHonors (the new Hilton Tallinn Park, recently reviewed here, is pictured below) has extended its offer of a 100% bonus when you purchase 20,000+ points.

The Hilton ‘buy points’ page is here.

The original deal, due to end of the 21st October, will now run until the 31st.

Regular readers of Head for Points will know that I tend to value Hilton points at 0.3p each.  You are paying 0.40p ($800 / £643 for 160,000) here so the maths does not look good, especially given the current state of the £.

(Of course, the cost of booking hotels priced in $ or € for cash has also gone up due to the weakness of Sterling.  It may be time to start giving points a higher value if you plan to spend them outside the UK.)

Five star Hilton, Conrad and Waldorf-Astoria hotels typically run to 80,000 points per night.  In this sale you would be paying $400 for 80,000 points which is often more than you would be paying for a five star in a major city.  This is not a bargain.

However, Hilton HHonors IS a decent deal at cheaper point levels.   The Hampton by Hilton in Sheffield, for example, is 10,000 points per night.  At 0.40p per point you would be paying roughly £40 per night if you bought the points.  That is a 60% discount on the typical nightly rate of £100.  Hampton properties include free breakfast as well.

If you just buying a handful of points to top off your account, the price per point doesn’t matter anyway.  If you a few thousand short of a redemption then this is a decent opportunity to buy them.

Why you should follow Head for Points on Instagram

When we launched the HfP Instagram channel last year it was, by necessity, a bit dull.  The original content was a few hundred photos which had already appeared on the main site.

Over the last few months our Instagram page has chilled out.  It is where we put the frivolous, silly or random stuff that doesn’t fit on the main site – although you will still get an early peak at the new hotels and airlines we are reviewing.

The last few sets of pictures cover a cocktail making day organised by Radisson Blu, the Sheraton Grand Park Lane relaunch party, a Justin Bieber concert with Starwood, some 1951 vintage UK airline travel posters I bought and a WWE Wrestling night organised by Virgin Atlantic – none of which was covered here.

If you’re not already following us on Instagram you can visit our page here.  We will try to run as much original content as we can.

Semi OT – Do Hilton “5 for the price of 4” nights work with cash+points or does it need to just be points?

    • James67 says:

Just points I believe but you can try it and see
as cash and points can be cancelled.

  • Saj says:

O/T. Being a Hilton diamond I booked the conrad Istanbul for my colleague for 8 nights added him on as additional guest. When he checked in they refused all diamond benefits and wiped the reservation from my account as I was not accompanying them.

    • Brian says:

Sounds like he didn’t say the right things!

      • Genghis says:

🙂 lol. Gave me a laugh.

So he said, “My colleague Saj booked 8 nights for me as he’s a Hilton Diamond member. He’s not coming along but I’d like to use his benefits” instead of “I’m staying with Saj for 8 nights who’s checking in later but I’m down as an additional guest so can I please check in now? I’ll take Saj’s key”

I think this could be the story of the remaking of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCqm4H3m3Ew

“and wiped the reservation from my account as I was not accompanying them.”

The clue could be in the last word above . Three in a king room !!!

  • Dave says:

europcar – looks like you dont know what car you are going to get

    • mark2 says:

maybe it’s me, but on the rare occasions that I have rented a car I never got what I had booked (always much better).

      • the real harry says:

same here – Europcar frequently upgrade at pick-up

on the £1 deal it’s possibly going to be a dealkiller if you’re particular about car size or luggage space – however, for those who can be flexible, it’s brilliant

I was looking at Plymouth and Exeter just to see if I could make it work over Xmas somehow – there were 20+ cars available from LHR on your choice of dates…

  • Saj says:

    Was a family suite

  • the real harry says:

just spent 5 mins on the Instagram site – what is the purpose of it? My guess is: photo album you can share with a wider audience.

Are there ways to monetise Instagram a/cs?

    • Rob says:

No, no way of monetising it. At the moment we are using it as a bit of fun because the main site has always been fairly serious and not too personalised (our photos rarely appear here, for eg).

      • TGLoyalty says:

There is the product placement side of it where people with large followings are compensated for their posts I believe?

        • Rob says:

Our numbers aren’t big enough – 10,000 is seen as the minimum – and in any event it isn’t the sort of thing that the business travel market has really embraced. ‘Influencer Marketing’ is the technical name for it.

I doubt a picture of me eating a Kit-Kat would fetch much money from Nestle …..

  • Brian says:

Bit frustrating, I have the £100 BA offer but the points redemption I want to do departs/arrives from different airports so can’t book it online.

    Any way around this? Thanks
