News in brief:

15,000 free Avios from American Express

I got a very pleasant surprise when I ran my AwardWallet update yesterday morning to refresh the balances of all my loyalty accounts.  My British Airways Executive Club balance had gone up by 15,000 Avios.

When I looked at my account at ba.com the description was:

“Special Promotion   15,000 Avios”

…. which was not very helpful.

However, opening up the BA app on my phone was more useful:

“Special Promotion -) BA Amex cobrand 15yr Surprise and Delight    15,000 Avios”

Whilst I have not received an email about this – I get a feeling that my card may be set to ‘no marketing’ – other people have had an email from BA confirming that this is to thank them for being a cardholder for 15 years.

BA told me that this bonus is going to 6,500 people who have held the card for 15 years and are ‘active’.  If your free BA card has been in a drawer for the last three years, you don’t receive the points apparently!

15,000 Avios is certainly not to be sniffed at.  If I was being cynical, you could argue that this is a fop to long-term cardholders who may be thinking of cancelling now that the annual fee has been raised to £195 whilst the value of an Avios has been devalued – but that is a very negative way of looking at it.  Even on my low valuations, 15,000 Avios is still worth over £100 so I won’t say no.

20% off Loyalty 2017 tickets

This is one purely for the industry readers of Head for Points.

Next year the massive annual Loyalty conference heads to London for a 3-day stint at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington from 20th to 22nd February.

If you look at the agenda for Wednesday 22nd you will see that I am speaking on “The Role of Bloggers In Your Communication Strategy“.  Please note that I did not write the slightly cringe-worthy description of what I will be talking about.

If you are in the trade and want to sign up to go along, HFP readers can get a 20% discount using code RGP21485.  You enter this code on the first page of the booking process and it gives an extra £299 discount on top of the current ‘early bird’ discount.

Etihad clarifies the rules of its Times promotion

Etihad has clarified the rules of its current promotion with The Times this week to give Etihad Guest status to anyone who signs up and takes one flight.

The offer is only open to new members of Etihad Guest who sign up via the link on this page.  If you already have an Etihad Guest account which is empty, you may want to create a new one with different address and email details.  This isn’t ideal, of course, but Etihad should have made the rules more flexible …..

You will receive Etihad Silver status if you take an Economy flight with Etihad before 10th May 2017.

You will receive Etihad Gold status if you take a Business or First Class flight with Etihad before 10th May 2017.

The following rules have now been added:

your flight must depart from the UK

your flight must be a return flight

….. which means no short hops from Abu Dhabi to Dubai and back!

It is worth noting that a similar deal for Silver status (but not Gold) is freely available to everyone, all year round, if they take out the Etihad Guest credit cards.  Full details are in my Etihad Guest credit card review.

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards (April 2024)

Etihad Guest does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Etihad Guest miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Etihad Guest miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Etihad Guest mile. The Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it.

Can’t recall how long I’ve had the card but only pay a grandfathered £30, and it’s clearly over 15 years, as I too got this nice surprise. Can’t argue with that!

  • Genghis says:

I thought it was just for me?

  • Richard says:

OT: But have you seen the changes to BA Avios in 2017? Big devaluation coming I reckon. See the ‘View From The Wing’ article.

    • Rob says:

Where? I looked on VFTW and couldn’t see anything. Is it a main article?

        • Rob says:

Thanks, I didn’t go back far enough.

I think this was from the Shareholder meeting a while ago? I actually think it is the opposite to the conclusion they make. By moving to the Shared platform then surely that will mean that in order to make big devaluations BA would need to get Agreement from Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling and Kulula. Currently they can do as they please with Executive Club but if it effects all the airlines then they will all have to agree – Note: I’m not saying it won’t happen simply that the moving to a shared platform doesn’t signal it happening.

          • Richard says:

            Could be ok then.

          • Rob says:

A shared platform is not the same as a shared programme.

If it was a shared programme then you would just have one set of partners. That won’t work. For a start, Aer Lingus AerClub members won’t have access to Qatar etc reward flights unless they move Avios to a BA account.

  • Jerry says:

Slightly OT – I know this has been discussed before, but can’t find it now. My partner has accidentally paid Amex 241 taxes on my BA supplementary card, rather than her card which earned the 241. Should we try and unpick this (within the 24 hours) or will it all be fine – as taxes have been paid on a BA card in her name, we’re both travelling and the avios are household? We both intend to continue to hold the BA Amex cards. Would appreciate advice / reassurance. Thanks!

    • Simmo says:

Don’t think it will be an issue – seen stories of people paying on their Gold Cards or Lloyds Amex cards also.

      • Jerry says:

Thank you. I’ve just checked the T&C and it states “The Cardmember is responsible for paying any Taxes, Fees and Charges relating to their Companion Voucher booking. All Taxes, Fees and Charges must be paid for using the British Airways American Express Card.” It doesn’t go on to specify this must be the BA card that earned the voucher. I’ve read the stories about using Gold cards and so on. Last time we travelled on a 241 they asked to see the credit card used for the booking ‘for security’ at the bag drop. There was a slight issue as the card had been re-issued since booking due to a potential card fraud alert, and had a different number. They accepted this (true) explanation. Such checks would be a problem if it was a Gold Amex I imagine.

        • Rob says:

          This is a different issue.

The check-in desk wants to see that you have the card you paid with. You will have it. The check-in desk is NOT about to start policing the rules of how you pay for the taxes on a BAPP 241!

There is, by the way, nothing BA can do if you can’t produce the card. It happened to me once, I had used the BA Amex but it was back in the drawer by the time of the flight as I’d hit my £10k. I showed them that I had other credit cards in my name and they were fine.

          • Jerry says:

Thank you. Very reassuring. As a bonus I realise we may also get the £100 Amex cash back on a £500 BA spend as the offer was saved to the supplementary card. That would cover the change fees we paid.

        • Genghis says:

You can pay on any Amex card. I paid last ones on my Lloyds Amex for wifes voucher and time before that on my wifes BAPP on my voucher. Not sure why there was a card check but what happens if you pay the taxes and then cancel the card? People dont carry around cancelled cards.

          • ankomonkey says:

Happened to me in NRT. They just asked for my address and telephone number and let me continue.

  • Rob says:

Anyone had any success with getting the bonus Sunday Times Travel Magazine Avios for an EU subscription? When I signed up I switched it to EU delivery and the 4,500 Avios still showed but after waiting 28 days and no Avios have looked back on my order and it doesn’t mention them.

Does the order usually mention that you signed up for the Avios offer? Will be gutted to miss out as I only really took it out to get the bonus 1,000 on top.

    • Richard says:

I’ve e-mailed them twice now and still haven’t got them.

      • Jerry says:

I’ve emailed 3 times asking for the Sunday Times Travel avios, and still no points. I have a screen shot of my personal sign up page with the avios clearly showing. The extreme fall back will have to be a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority.

        • Rob says:

Really need to get into the habbit of Screen Printing an order page!

Have e-mailed so will be waiting to see. I have five days to get it resolved in order to get my extra 1,000 Avios for a new partner.

Amex have also added an extra starpoint when paying for stays at Starwood or Marriot hotels on the Starwood SPG Amex. Something that the card should really have always had but a welcome addition nonetheless!

Anything I can do with 3,000 AA Miles about to expire in a month?
(Or cost effective way of keep them active).

    • Nick_C says:

Are you signed up to e-rewards surveys? 500 AA miles for 2000 points.

    • JP says:

You can donate 1000 to charity, that will keep the other 2000 alive. Or a small transfer from Starwood if you have any of those. (Or MR or Marriott to SPG to AA!)

The survey route is probably the best!

    • InsideFlyer Tom says:

Your best bet is to sign up to the excellent Award Wallet, add your AAdvantage account to it and then add a comment on the Award Wallet blog. You’ll get 5 AAdvantage miles within 3 days, resetting the 18 month expiry clock.

O/T BA 2 for 1 voucher. When in the app it says if you need to book further ahead than 355 days to call BA customer service. Does that actually work if I wanted to travel in November?

    • rams1981 says:

      late November 2017 that is

    • Rob says:

No. It physically cannot be done because the booking system can’t do it. No idea why the app says this.

      • rams1981 says:

the lady at BA said she doesn’t know why it says this. She also confirmed I can book the outbound when seat is on sale and add the return for free via the change team when seats open up.
