Win 100,000 Avios with Avis – simply fill in a form ….

If all goes to plan, we should have a fantastic competition to win a very large pile of Avios exclusively for Head for Points readers over the next week or so.

In the meantime, you might want to have a look at this Avios / Avis competition to win 100,000 Avios points.

It has been knocking around for a few weeks but I missed it until yesterday.  The deadline for entries is Wednesday 30th so don’t hang around.

Entering is easy.  All you need to do is visit this website and fill in your name and address.  Note that the (optional) box for your Avios account number is for an avios.com number and not a British Airways Executive Club one.

No purchase is required and you don’t need to have rented from Avis recently either.

There is no need to watch the video, but it has lots of nice Irish scenery in it – but not many jokes.  Sorry Jarlath ….

Avis & Avios, go together like cheese & wine!

Again, read the fine print: UK RESIDENTS ONLY

  3. well i’ve never bothered with an avios account before (not seeing the point having BA account) but this was the incintive to sign up!

  4. Link doesn’t work for me in either Chrome or IE.

    Anyone else having a problem?

  5. Rob, OT but any idea why QR avios redemptions are no longer available to / from the UK? There used to be wide open availability for all the UK-DOH routes and now there are none. Yet there is still loads of availability for Eu airports auch as AMX, CDG, MXP etc etc…

    • Haven’t seen this, to be honest. Could it be something to do with the new BA / Qatar revenue sharing / codesharing deal?

      • No idea but it’s frustrating as I was looking at Doh – Man next March and they suddenly stopped showing up. Tried other UK destinations and the same aswell. OT again – but off the top pof your head do you know how much taxes you pay for a DXB – LHR flight on Qantas in J? It always errors when I try and look in BAEC.

  6. O/T.

Long time reader, first time poster.

First of all, thank you to this community for all your helpful tips. Though I do feel I’ve missed the boat on a lot of things, and most annoyingly wasted the opportunities of my previous job when I flew more frequently, better late than never.

Now having been reading these pages for some weeks, and gone back through all Rob’s helpful credit card reviews to refresh my memory, I am still none the wiser as to one question. For non-Amex spend (I still find myself visiting retailers and restaurants than reject it on occasion), once one has used up and churned the Hilton Visa card for a free night voucher, what is the consensus on best card for good ongoing points earning and/or cashback? I am mainly interested in Avios and the loyalty schemes of Hilton, Accor and Club Carlson. One option is to stick with my Hilton Visa, but Rob doesn’t rate the ongoing earnings highly. Is there a better option that I have missed?

    Thank you in advance.

    • As a ‘ long time reader’ you say , there has been a mountain of information on this site. I suggest you start by searching.

    • For non Amex Avios, your best bet is HSBC Premier card but that has relatively strict entry requirements. If you qualify, worth a look.

Other than that, the best points non-Amex cards are Virgin Black (1/GBP = 1% on Visa) or IHG (2/GBP =1% on MC). If they`re not for you, perhaps better sticking with the Hilton card 2/GBP = 0.6%.

      • Thank you. That’s very helpful. I had the HSBC Premier account down as one to reinvestigate in the new year when I would usually change current account, so perhaps I’ll accelerate that.

Both comforting and dispiriting to find that sticking with the Hilton card at a relatively weak rate may otherwise be the best of a bad bunch!

I stick with Hilton for my non-amex spend and quite nice the way it does accumulate into your HHonors account over time. With a young family, and therefore doing less work travelling, and with additional expense at home it is more important to us to have zero spend value, which Hotel points give, as opposed to Airline points which give a value if you spend y or usually a greater value if you spend x+y.

It’s whatever works best for you over time I find.

        • I too stick with the Hilton for all non-Amex spend. Would have to try all sorts of jiggerypokery to qualify for the HSBC premier nowadays, so this is a decent backup.

I easily spend over 10k a year on it where amex isn’t accepted, so it makes sure that I maintain my gold Hilton status as I tend to churn the amex cards a lot.

Plus 2 points per £ spend and 3 in Hilton, I often near 1p per point in my points and money redemptions so I rate it as an ongoing card. It works for me as I mainly use Hiltons.

      • My last five Hilton nights have all been at the Hampton Newcastle, very new, very comfortable, MUCH nicer than most HI Expresses in the UK.

A free stay is only 10 000, and for three nights over Christmas I pay <£20 + 4 000 points per night.

        I reckon I am getting around 1.3p – 1.4p per point.

The only downside to Hampton I have found is that with points stays I do not get any points at all on bar purchases, as I would at HIE, and no free drink for my Silver Hilton, as I would with Gold IHG.

Most of my Hilton points come from my Hilton Visa, others from e-Rewards. I have twice had to but 2 000 during a [points sale to top up.

The last time I paid full cash price at a Hilton was Basel in 2014 and at CHF150,– that was remarbly cheap too!

Remember that competition you ran ages ago with Qatar, which specifically wanted entrants from ROI/N Ireland (presumably to add to its mailing list):

  8. Entered myself and Mrs Gavin – look forward to the HfP competition!

    • Off topic, does anyone know a clever way of keeping Carlson Club (Radisson hotels) points valid without having to make a stay at their hotels. My points expire in 30 days but I’m unable to complete a stay during that time. Any advice appreciated.

  9. MrHandBaggageOnly says:

Entered, thanks. But more importantly it jogged me to check my Avios account and…

…O/T My 4,500 bonus Avios for the Sunday Times Travel Mag subscription (applied on 22/10) has appeared today. Thanks for the tip on that! Also read my first copy of the magazine last night and thought it was a good read. :)

    • Still not in my BA Exec Club a/c. I was promised them by last Monday, and no reply yet to my follow up e-mail either.

  10. OT Anyone have their airBerlin status upgraded to silver yet? Still stuck on classic on all 3 family member accounts.

  13. With these promos, is there a way – or have people been caught out- by entering with multiple email addresses?
