Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Get £15 off a £25 Amazon purchase for ALL Amex Gold and Platinum holders

American Express sent out an interesting offer to its Gold, Green, Centurion and Platinum cardholders yesterday.

You will save £15 on your next Amazon order of £25 or more as long as you part-pay with Membership Rewards points.

If your account is set to ‘no marketing’ then you may not have received it.  Not to worry, it is still open to you.

As I wrote in this article here, you can now use your American Express Membership Rewards points to pay for Amazon orders.

The rate is poor – just 0.45p per point.  You are far better off using your points for something more valuable such as airline miles or hotel points.

The process is seamless though.  Once you have linked your Membership Rewards account to your Amazon account, you will be given the option to pay or part-pay with points every time you check out.

There is a little quirk in this deal which lets you maximise the value you get.

This is what you need to do to save £15:

If you have not already done so, link your Membership Rewards account with your Amazon account by visiting this page on the Amazon website

Buy £25 of items on amazon.co.uk (these must all be sold by Amazon and not third party merchants, and excludes digital content, including digital gift cards)

Enter code AMEX16SWP at check out

Part-pay for your order using Membership Rewards points.  The sneaky option is to redeem just 2 points for a 1p discount.  This saves you ‘wasting’ Membership Rewards points on a low value redemption.

The offer runs until 31st January.  However, it is limited to the first 33,333 people to order so I wouldn’t leave it too late.

    Looks like it’s expired!

  • PalCsaky says:

Seeing how many have took part my chances of winning one million MR points have been greatly reduced. https://headforpoints.com/2016/10/21/win-one-million-membership-rewards-points/

  • Richard says:

Sorry, I changed to Amazon SARL and it worked, £25 of dishwasher tabs for £9.99!

  • Rob says:

Moët & Chandon is exactly £25 a bottle – might grab a couple of those across our cards once back in stock.

    • Jonny says:

Thought you would be more of a Veuve man Rob…!

      • Rob says:

There is a bottle of Veuve on my office desk at the moment (a gift) – we will have it for lunch tomorrow 🙂

  • Genghis says:

I managed to apply 2 MR points to a purchase, get the £15 off and still use my gift card balance.

    • Boi says:

      How did you do that?

      • Genghis says:

It’s what it defaulted to. So my advice is that if you don’t want to pay with the Amex itself, top up your amazon account with the card you actually want to pay with, then enter to use 0.01p of MR points, click ‘apply’, enter the code to get the £15 off and it should all work hunky dory.

There’s clearly something a bit glitchy at Amazon checkout – I’ve got plenty of GC balance but it still wouldn’t let me use them combined with the offer.

Bought a jumbo pack of gillete razors and some socks lol

  • Will says:

Cant get it to work using code AMEX16SWP.
Says: The promotional code you entered cannot be applied to your purchase.?
Normal address and Amex gold card, using points to make a discount adds to the order but the code wont!?
    any thoughts?

    • Will says:

33000 people have used it already!?!?!

    • Sean says:

If you have multiple cards logged onto your amazon account, make sure you select the correct Amex card on the card screen.
Also check that all the items are from Amazon Sarl

Happened to me and when I changed them, it worked.

    • Boris says:

Sounds like you need to restrict your seller to “Amazon” perhaps?

Down the LHS on the search screen.

  • Mark says:

I cannot get my membership card linked to the Amazon – called Amex and they said linking is unnecessary and I should simply use the code AMEX16SWP – but that does not work either as I get ‘The promotional code you entered cannot be applied to your purchase’

Linking the accounts I get: ‘American Express reports you do not have a Membership Rewards Account’

    Seems this is not working

    • Alan says:

Which card do you have? Just to check you are trying to use a Plat or Gold charge card!
