Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Here’s the full BA ‘buy on board’ menu, with pricing, which launches next week

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Buy on board‘ comes to British Airways short haul flights from next Wednesday.  That is, if your flight isn’t cancelled by the strike.

(Don’t forget to claim your 1,000 Avios compensation if you had any short haul flights booked before the 29th September announcement date for travel after 11th January.  You need to drop Customer Services an email.  Note that it is 1,000 Avios per member and not 1,000 Avios per flight.  In theory flight refunds are also available although you will get some push back from Customer Services on this.)

The full menu, with cash and Avios pricing, is now available online.  You can see it here.

Magners Original Cider – 330ml can – £4.00 / 500 Avios

The first observation is that the fresh food selection seems pitifully small.  The pricing seems relatively reasonable, however, when compared to the drinks list – £4 for a can of Heineken (sold in a duty free environment, remember) is a bit of a shocker.  £1.80 for a can of coke isn’t going to win BA any friends either.

In terms of pence per Avios, 0.8p per point is not a bad deal. I have done worse flight redemptions than this.  I can’t see a scenario where I would pay cash.

(Technically, you can’t pay cash at all – it is credit cards or BAEC cards only.)

It isn’t clear whether the porridge at 1.12p per Avios is a typo or a special offer for Avios collectors – I am guessing the former.

I am told that BA will be over-stocking for the first few weeks so you should at least get what you want.  Stock numbers will be cut back once the airline has a better idea of what is required.

It remains to be seen if BA will be doing a strict ‘front to back’ service routine or not, because on short routes where you sit could be the difference between getting served or not.  I think one of the big US airlines varies it based on whether the flight number is even or odd.

Club Europe food remains separate.  If you don’t like what is on offer, you will need to pay to take an alternative from the buy on board selection.

Is this going to work or it will be a monumental flop?  We will see after next Wednesday.

No chance I will be buying anything. Cos I won’t be flying BA anymore.

And if BA are channelling Norwegian, they’ll be interested to know that service was over in less than 5 mins in all of the 4 Norwegian flights I’ve taken in the last month. Very few people buy anything.

  • Kipto says:

With regards to claiming the 1000 Avios compensation can I claim on behalf of my wife who is on the same booking as me or does she have to apply herself ?

    • tim says:

I sucessfully claimed for 4 family members. All in same booking

    • James67 says:

I put all the extra detail in the comments and we both got compensated with the one claim.

  • Simon Barlow says:

    Hi Rob,
I booked flights to fuerteventura last September for this coming summer. Looks like I can claim done avios based on your article and the loss of in flight food. Do you have a link by any chance to facilitate this?

    Many thanks
    Simon

    • Rob says:

No. Just email BA (not sure if there is a contact form online?) and ask for it.

  • Paul says:

Hmm, sounding like I’m in a minority here but I’m not too unhappy with this arrangement. Certainly as far as food goes I never rated the BA economy offering (actually, come to think of it nor do I in CE). These options, all be them paid for, look far more appealing with a lot more choice. Cost is close to what you’d pay (at inflated airport prices) on the ground. Compared to the ridiculous cost charged e.g. for seat selection I’m not too sure a few quid for food that I’d actually prefer is that upsetting. Losing the free coffee a bit more so…

    • Rob says:

I am OK with it, but only because the free offering has been whittled away so far it became pointless. I would be happier if hot drinks were free. That said, I have no BA economy short haul in the diary and realistically I would only experience this on a domestic.

  • Nick says:

What astonishes me is the contempt with which current BA senior management treat their premium passengers. It would have been very simple to provide complementary food and drink to Gold and Silver Executive Club members. Meanwhile easyJet have been quick to exploit BA’s service reduction by offering passengers on Flexi tickets free food and drink up o £5 – a very smart move to attract BA premium short haul customers.

I object even more strongly to BA’s cynical us of Priority Baggage tags. BA are still attaching Priority Baggage labels to First, Club and eligible EC members luggage despite no longer offer a priority baggage service. Priority labelled bags arrive at random amongst other luggage and both the HighLife magazine and website explicitly state that British Airways does not offer a priority baggage service:

    “Priority baggage handling
As an Emerald frequent flyer you will also receive priority baggage handling when travelling in any cabin on an eligible oneworld flight, giving your baggage priority handling from aircraft to carousel.. (Priority baggage handling is not available on flights operated by British Airways.)”

    • Genghis says:

What kind of complementary food and drink are you wanting? Goats cheese and sauvignon blanc? 🙂

    • Alan says:

Yep, priority bags seems to mean absolutely nothing at all – I’m not sure why they bother with the cost of printing the tags!

      • AndyGWP says:

I think they would still serve a purpose (for the final destination) if connecting to another OneWorld airline – i.e. AA? 🙂 – agreed for flights with no connection tho – seems pointless! 🙂

        • Alan says:

Possibly – in the main I’d like to see them first off the carousel when arriving at destination – so annoying to breeze through immigration with Global Entry only to have to wait for most of the bags to be unloaded before yours finally make an appearance 😉

    • Callum says:

Jesus Christ – they’re showing contempt because they aren’t giving a £5 dining credit!? I say this every time but it’s getting increasingly pathetic how personally people take things like this…

And if people will be flocking to Easyjet for a “free” sandwich then they need their heads examined.

  • Simon says:

My god people get upset about paying for things don’t they….. Like its a god given right to have a cup of tea every 3 hours….. Grow up, or chose a different airline…. I think the menu is great. Many people can use their Avios earned on the actual flight. This will drain the pool of Avios out there a little bit. Every little helps….

  • Leo says:

I agree BOB is a downgrade. I understand that folks will be annoyed by this. However on my flight from Berlin yesterday I was offered a vodka and tonic and a bag of crisps or a couple of biscuits. I don’t think that’s enough of a loss to make me change my flying patterns. I don’t fly for business but I do have a few holidays a year. I will continue to fly four BA segments a year and credit a long haul from another OW carrier to BAEC to keep Silver. This status makes the 4 BA segments bearable – being able to eat and have a couple of drinks in the lounge first etc. Whilst I do use BA for the bare minimum now it has to be said, I do in some ways think it is better to have the choice for something more than a bag of crisps. I struggle with paying for a cup of tea though but I won’t be making any stand regarding a cup of hot water and my own teabag – you are going to get some very odd looks, but to each his own….
