Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Here’s the full BA ‘buy on board’ menu, with pricing, which launches next week

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Buy on board‘ comes to British Airways short haul flights from next Wednesday.  That is, if your flight isn’t cancelled by the strike.

(Don’t forget to claim your 1,000 Avios compensation if you had any short haul flights booked before the 29th September announcement date for travel after 11th January.  You need to drop Customer Services an email.  Note that it is 1,000 Avios per member and not 1,000 Avios per flight.  In theory flight refunds are also available although you will get some push back from Customer Services on this.)

Old Speckled Hen – 330ml can – £4.00 / 500 Avios
Magners Original Cider – 330ml can – £4.00 / 500 Avios

The first observation is that the fresh food selection seems pitifully small.  The pricing seems relatively reasonable, however, when compared to the drinks list – £4 for a can of Heineken (sold in a duty free environment, remember) is a bit of a shocker.  £1.80 for a can of coke isn’t going to win BA any friends either.

In terms of pence per Avios, 0.8p per point is not a bad deal. I have done worse flight redemptions than this.  I can’t see a scenario where I would pay cash.

(Technically, you can’t pay cash at all – it is credit cards or BAEC cards only.)

It isn’t clear whether the porridge at 1.12p per Avios is a typo or a special offer for Avios collectors – I am guessing the former.

I am told that BA will be over-stocking for the first few weeks so you should at least get what you want.  Stock numbers will be cut back once the airline has a better idea of what is required.

It remains to be seen if BA will be doing a strict ‘front to back’ service routine or not, because on short routes where you sit could be the difference between getting served or not.  I think one of the big US airlines varies it based on whether the flight number is even or odd.

Club Europe food remains separate.  If you don’t like what is on offer, you will need to pay to take an alternative from the buy on board selection.

Is this going to work or it will be a monumental flop?  We will see after next Wednesday.

  • Rob says:

Interestingly I booked in October last year and still wangled a £10 flight voucher out of them after a few sets of email tennis.

  • Steve R says:

If London Airways were charging Ryan Air / Easy Jet etc’s fares, then fine. But they don’t.

Still gives the cabin crews something else to complain about, all the tin foil wrappers, empty water bottles etc they will have to clean up. by people bringing their own food & water aboard

  • Rob says:

if it is only BAEC cards accepted does this mean you can not Pay with Avios from your AVUK account? or if you are a blue member and therefore don’t have a card?

    • Simon says:

Wont the crew know your BAEC account number from your seat booking??

    • Simon 2 says:

The updated BAEC app on the iphone now has a bar code in the My Account area. I’m guessing they’ll just be scanning that to pay with Avios.

      • Rob says:

Ok, To be honest the Space on my phone is too precious to waste on Apps i’ll only use once a month, I’d rather do without an overpriced coke. I will however be cursing the stupid terrorists that made it impossible to bring your own liquids onto a flight!

        • Callum says:

I can’t remember the last flight I took without taking my own drink on board…

        • Alex W says:

If I was you I would be cursing the Apple iClone for having a ridiculously small non-expandabke memory. That would be much more annoying than paying 5 quid for a sandwich. You could trade in your iClone for a better phone such as a One Plus, and still have enough change for about 100 packets of Percy Pigs!

  • Flightdoctor says:

As a coeliac I was hoping that, given M&S’s considerable investment in gluten free food, especially some delicious sandwiches, that BA would have a better allergy-friendly selection….but no, I am limited to an (unhealthy) caramel biscuit. So, will have to fill up in the lounge if I have time or buy in the terminal as usual…..

    • Rob says:

Apparently most of the sarnies failed the ‘altitude’ test – they either went too soggy in storage or they had no taste at altitude (your taste buds are seriously hampered when flying).

  • Gibbooo says:

    Wowsers.

They really have won the race to the bottom. With this offering and the crews going on strike.

Wonder what would happen if I fill my case with kettle chips and cans of pop from the lounge and offer them around. FOB (free on board)

    • Graham says:

The cabin might now want equal pay with M&S checkout staff or move over as a career advance.

  • Phil Welch says:

Does the 1,000 Avios compensation apply to UK Domestic as well?

My family of four are doing long-haul return from Manchester in August, booked before the 29 September announcement. There are 8 sectors between us.

Is it 1,000 per customer, per flight?

    • the real harry says:

I have yet to claim & will report back – another 30 flights booked before the F&Booze changes

according to FT, it was very haphazard, some people getting 1000 per member, some getting 1000 per flight, some not getting anything on subseqyent flights if compensation had already been awarded

I haven’t read the thread for a couple of months, anybody got the link pls?

Easter flights – time to claim compo methinks 🙂

  • Mark R says:

No problem with this change, if they take the overall price of the flight of the flight down, if they really want to compete with low cost competitors go right ahead.

Menu leaves a lot to be desired, but sure some tweaks can be done once they see what’s popular.

    • Ian says:

Will they reduce the price of the flights? Absolutely not.

      • Callum says:

Not enacting a planned increase is conceptually exactly the same as decreasing the fare… Just like when companies reduce product sizes. Why people struggle so badly to figure out that incredibly simple concept I have no idea.

  • Harry says:

I can ponky see this as doomed to failure. Instead of supplying a small limited number of food and drink items free, BA are now suggesting that all their flights will also be corner shops selling 67 items of food and drink. The logistics of loading, charging for, clearing up the rubbish from and then restocking those 67 item carts, is a nightmare. It will cause immense customer dissatisfaction, not necessarily because of payment against free but because what you want will not be available and on shorter flights the time taken to process the payments will mean that those at the back of the queue will not get anything. Very poorly thought out logistics in my view. Some FCA has persuaded BA management that they will save a fortune and those who will have to implement this crazy idea have been ignored. Yes it is true that Easy Jet and Ryan, for example, sell food and drink but none of them have a 67 item menu or force credit card transactions.

    • Aden says:

I can absolutely assure there is no logistical nightmare in the “packing” department. The current offering however does cause many headaches on a daily… Also you are not understanding that whilst during the current “complimentary” service offer – everybody feels entitled to receive something. When people have to part with their cash to get something not everybody will… meaning more often than not a much quicker service. Also just as an aside example, Flybe has on average the shortest sector flying times of any other UK airline… Flybe also has the largest choice from the buy onboard menu of any UK airline including the new BA M&S service…

    • Callum says:

Not only are the logistics relatively easy, taking payment by card does not take up more time than a typical cash transaction (why do you think they’d be credit card only if it cost them significant sales?). If they accept contactless than it will be significantly faster than cash.

Iberia and Vueling run BOB already – why should IAG take your random guesses more seriously than their real experience running these “corner shops”?
