Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Here’s the full BA ‘buy on board’ menu, with pricing, which launches next week

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Buy on board‘ comes to British Airways short haul flights from next Wednesday.  That is, if your flight isn’t cancelled by the strike.

(Don’t forget to claim your 1,000 Avios compensation if you had any short haul flights booked before the 29th September announcement date for travel after 11th January.  You need to drop Customer Services an email.  Note that it is 1,000 Avios per member and not 1,000 Avios per flight.  In theory flight refunds are also available although you will get some push back from Customer Services on this.)

The full menu, with cash and Avios pricing, is now available online.  You can see it here.

Old Speckled Hen – 330ml can – £4.00 / 500 Avios
Magners Original Cider – 330ml can – £4.00 / 500 Avios

The first observation is that the fresh food selection seems pitifully small.  The pricing seems relatively reasonable, however, when compared to the drinks list – £4 for a can of Heineken (sold in a duty free environment, remember) is a bit of a shocker.  £1.80 for a can of coke isn’t going to win BA any friends either.

In terms of pence per Avios, 0.8p per point is not a bad deal. I have done worse flight redemptions than this.  I can’t see a scenario where I would pay cash.

(Technically, you can’t pay cash at all – it is credit cards or BAEC cards only.)

It isn’t clear whether the porridge at 1.12p per Avios is a typo or a special offer for Avios collectors – I am guessing the former.

I am told that BA will be over-stocking for the first few weeks so you should at least get what you want.  Stock numbers will be cut back once the airline has a better idea of what is required.

It remains to be seen if BA will be doing a strict ‘front to back’ service routine or not, because on short routes where you sit could be the difference between getting served or not.  I think one of the big US airlines varies it based on whether the flight number is even or odd.

Club Europe food remains separate.  If you don’t like what is on offer, you will need to pay to take an alternative from the buy on board selection.

Is this going to work or it will be a monumental flop?  We will see after next Wednesday.

Reasons to fly BA over Easyjet now = 0

  • Alan says:

It’s AA that does FEBO (front even flight nos, back odd flight nos).

  • Susan says:

It’s OK to bring one’s own grub/ water on board but does anyone know if it is legal to consume self-supplied alcohol?

  • Roger I says:

I took my first non-BA flight to Zurich and back over the holiday. Putting my consider-all-options policy firstI flew SWISS in Y. Timings and cost were convenient.

I could suffer LX Y. 🙂 but I’ve no idea whether they have any ‘enhancement’ plans. Catering was a ;freshly made’ cheese roll (tasty) with coffee/tea and limited bar service – soft drinks, wine and beer. Also a chocolate bar in festive packaging. All complimentary. Just fine for me.

The Boots option at LHR looks acceptable. I know where Boots is at T5. I would earn Boots points and Heathrow points. We have a 4+ hours flight from LGW later in the year taking off at 07:25. Just need to find out where Boots is and work out whether there’ll be time to visit before the flight. For the return 4+ hours leg, I guess we’ll buy the M&S if there’s any left.

    • Roger I says:

Sorry, not my first non-BA flight to Zurich but my first non-BA flight to Zurich for ages …

      • John says:

LX unenhanced itself from no complimentary offering to what you received (which hasn’t changed in the past 5 years or so)

There are meat rolls if you ask in German (or perhaps French for GVA) 🙂

    • Lady London says:

At Heathrow there’s also the takeaway meal packages from Plane Food which I thoroughly recommend. They are really nice. I have my breakfast at Plane Food or even Pret these days, if I’m in a hurry, rather than go into the BA Lounge. I’ll be first into the Plaza Premium Lounge when that opens at T5.

BOB will at least avoid myself and the crew the embarrassment of serving me what had got to be laughably insulting little snippets. I think they could have done better than M & S on board but lots of people may like it. I will remain happy with my own arrangements as above.

  • Lady London says:

If someone does exercise their right to cancel their ticket due to this change, can you please keep us posted on here? I think they are supposed to refund your ticket legally, but would like to see what they try in order not to if anyone attempts it.

  • Graham says:

Rob, is the Percy Pig logo yours ? Or are BA trying to upset their Muslim customers and nudge them to another airline as well. (sometimes I think that you can’t make it up, or maybe they’re responding to customer demands)

    • Simon says:

Are you trying to upset Jewish people by missing them out of your pathetic comment? Should airlines not sell anything that some religions forbid from eating?

      • Rob says:

Percy Pig is M&S’s most successful brand creation. Do some Google searches. The man (well, pig) is a legend. Even though I prefer Colin The Caterpillar myself.

  • Nick says:

That dreadful pink “Percy Pig” creation has the same smug smile that you see if google an image of BA CEO Alex Cruz. In my opinion neither are fit for purpose and Mr Cruz and his Pepper Pig will oversee a decline in premium passengers traveling on BA.

    • Rob says:

But it doesn’t effect Premium passangers does it?

I will continue to fly BA for work as I sit up front, but I will most likely pick the cheapest fare for SH leisure but on a two hour flight I tended to only pick BA if they are close to the prices of the LCC which probably doesn’t make them a lot in terms of money anyway as they have much higher overheads.

      • Nick says:

I think BA are gambling that it does not affect premium passengers. However I think it does affect them as numerous premium passengers choose to fly BA economy for their short haul flights and Club World or first for long haul. Most in this category will be BAEC silver or gold members. It would have been very easy for BA to provide complementary food and drink from the BOB Cart to Gold and Silver members which would make us feel valued customers. As it is we lose our complementary G&T on a flight back from e.g. Edinburgh after a busy working day which gives the impression BA don’t look after premium customers. I think this will drive people to choose ME3, Cathay etc on long haul flights. So yes – I think it will hit long haul premium revenues.

  • James67 says:

I suspect that the point we are all missing is that the current ‘reasonable’ launch BOB prices will likely increase dramatically after a year or so.

    • Rob says:

That is what really bugs me, not that they bring in BOB but that they charge silly prices. Why am I expected to pay 3€ for a fun size diet coke I can buy on the ground for 0,75€ just because I am their customer and they have me stuck.

      • Aden says:

You are not forced to buy onboard at all and you are still more than welcome to get one on the ground and bring it onboard. They will also be 330ml full size cans for your reference.

        • the real harry says:

WHSmith & Boots will be getting my business + sandwiches/ apples from home

      • Paul says:

Hang on a minute… it’s actually £1.80 and for a 330ml full size can. Whilst I’m not claiming that’s cheap, and certainly you’ll do better in supermarkets, it’s not quite what I’d term a “silly price”. You’ll struggle to do significantly better at inflated airport prices on the ground, I’d have thought. Certainly good luck finding them on the ground for 75c as you imply…!
