Bits: IHG UK sale at 9am, triple Avios registration hiccups, HfP lounge review links

News in brief:

IHG flash sale starts at 9am

IHG, owner of the Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental and Indigo brands amongst others, is launching a 72-hour flash sale at 9am today.

This will ONLY cover hotels in the UK.

I don’t have any further information except that the discounts will be “amazing” (says IHG) and that you need to stay between 4th January and 27th February 2017.

The landing page for the sale is here.  The InterContinental O2, pictured below, may or may not be included.

As the sale requires you to be an IHG Rewards Club (free to join) member to book, I would imagine – but check the small print – that rooms are guaranteed to qualify to earn points and stay credit.  This could make it a cheap way to tick off some of your targets for the Spring ‘Accelerate’ promotion, especially if you are targeted for an extra bonus for a stay in January.

Registration issues for ‘triple Avios’

I wrote about the new British Airways ‘triple Avios’ promotion yesterday.

Many of us were getting odd messages when registering. During the morning, BA changed the website to say that UK and US residents must wait until Thursday to register.  If your BA account lives elsewhere you can register now.

If you tried to register yesterday and got the confusing ‘Thank you for registering / you are not registered’ message, try again tomorrow.

Our UK airport lounge reviews collected

Following a reader suggestion, I have put together links to all of our UK airport and train lounge reviews in one place.

Going forward, you can easily find a link to a UK lounge review by going here.  I haven’t included our overseas reviews because they are a rather eclectic selection.  The UK listing is fairly comprehensive for the South East – I apologise for the weaker coverage elsewhere.

Looked at a stay in my local HIX and £46 for a Friday night. In the “flash sale”, £89 for the same room.

  • Margaret says:

Tried to book the IHG sale by phone but was told the sale iwasn’t on the operator’s system. So phoned the hotel direct to be told the sale finished on the 7th February not 27th as on the landing page. Phoned central booking again and was told it finished on 7th February.

  • Paul Irving says:

Aweful sale, more hotel company lies. Nothing amazing about it.

  • Neal says:

Nothing amazing. This is a joke compare to Accor Happy Monday

  • Max says:

Just compared some dummy bookings with and without the sale code and found that nearly always the non sale price was cheaper!

    • DAZ says:

      Agreed! This is pap.

Example: HIX in the centre of Swindon, not the most pleasant of areas; normally £40.00 on a decent day. it’s £89.00 in the flash sale!

    • Andy says:

Just did the same for a few bookings I’m planning and to be fair there were always a few hotels in each city that were about £10 cheaper per night. Not exactly amazing but there are savings to be had.

    • Nick says:

      Ditto!

I was waiting to book a HI at the end of January to see what the sale rates would be like. I got the Flash Sale rate of £69.00 for the night of the 27th January, but the Club Advance Purchase Rate, which is basically no different, was only £58.00 for the same night.

  • Mark says:

The first HIX I tried jumped from £32 yesterday to £38 in the “sale”!

  • DAZ says:

The HIX in Bath definitely doesn’t like doing a Flash Sale on the Half term weekend even thought the sale is until the 27 Feb.

    • DAZ says:

However to be fair you can get some £69.00 rooms at other times in the HIX Bath. So this is a deal if you want a cheap weekend in Bath, rooms for this HIX can be £200.00 a night sometimes.

  • Iain says:

OT – does anyone know if it is possible to get BAEC benefits when booking through Avis direct? I’m trying to get a select series model but this does not appear on BA or AVISBA web sites – only Avis. I’d like to claim free additional driver. Any help greatly appreciated.

    • Terri says:

I booked direct with Avis UK using the BA awd code for a trip to Florida October 16. I received the free additional driver and the avios posted afterwards. The price was also competitive. I took a print of the BA benefits just in case but it was not needed. I also registered for Avis preferred and received a free one car upgrade at the counter.
