‘Secret’ Hilton and Avis cashback deals with American Express launched

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

American Express seems to be trialling exclusive cashback deals for Facebook users.

Unfortunately, we are about to ruin their experiment by publicising the deal here and generating a few thousand sign-ups.

This is the deal:

You will receive £20 cashback on a £100 Hilton spend before 31st January and £20 cashback on a £100 Avis spend before 31st January.  The spend needs to take place in the UK.

Avis bonus avios

You need to register for both deals at the same page which is here.

Note that there is a list of participating hotels for the Hilton deal which you should check if you are making a special stay.

Who can register?

It isn’t clear.  The offer is being promoted on Facebook so in theory it is not targetted.

However, when I tried to register my MBNA American Express card, I was told ‘sorry, this offer is by invitation only’.  I then tried to register my British Airways American Express card and my registration was accepted.

I recommend you give it a go with whatever cards you have to hand and see if one sticks.

Hilton Park Lane

The offer is limited to the first 15,000 Amex cards to be registered.

The reason the offers are being promoted together is that there is a linked competition.  Everyone who triggers both sets of cashback will be entered into a free draw.  Five winners will receive a one or two night break at the Hilton Park Lane in London (photo above) and another five winners will win a weekend Avis rental.

The registration page is here.

  • Crafty says:

Thanks Rob. This has actually been going since well before Christmas, so I am surprised it hasn’t hit its limit yet. I guess Amex gets limited traction via Facebook. So more exposure may be exactly what this one needs!

  • Elena / MuslimtravelGirl says:

Since I have 30 stays by the end of the month at Hilton, I might as well save myself £20 off the total bill. Thanks Rob 🙂

    • Brian says:

Where are you spending the other day?? Or is one of the stays for two nights? Must be very inconvenient having to check in and out so many times! :))

      • Genghis says:

        I thought that.
@Elena / MuslimtravelGirl Are these stays necessary or are you hitting a Hilton target?

  • Nick says:

Surely an American Express cardholder would never use the likes of Facebook? 😉

  • AliD says:

Presumably an Avis Pre-paid UK booking that is paid in Jan will work – even if the rental itself is after Jan?
Does the same work with Hilton – or do they only charge the card at checkout?

    • the real harry1 says:

it’ll presumably be the payment itself that triggers the statement credit, same as usual.

do Avis/ Hilton do fully flexible (ie refundable) bookings, I wonder?

    • Trev says:

If you do an advanced purchase or winter sale rate with Hilton, it’s usually charged within a few days of the booking.

  • Gabriel says:

Thank you, it might come useful. On my registration page it said offer limited to the first 10,000 cards…

  • vol says:

Didn’t like my Barclaycard issued Amex

Did like premium BA Amex card
Did like Amex Membership rewards card

Used same email – had no issues with that

    Cheers Rob

    OT:

fab Mayfair Pizza offer on Amex £25 off £50 spend

Fab home wine tasting offer too

**£70** off £99 spend – there must be a catch but I haven’t got that far yet

    • Genghis says:

@vol Have you been to Mayfair Pizza? Any good? Do you know what Krug they sell? I see a potential for a split bill and some not bad priced Krug.

      • Brian says:

Mayfair Pizza is very good – decent service and lovely pizza. They sell Krug – not sure which, but it’s on the online menu…

      • vol says:

I’ve never been but with this offer I think a visit is certainly in order 🙂

      • David P says:

It should be the standard Grande Cuvee. Apart from the rose, Krug don’t make any other NV champagne, do they?

The Tignanello is also a very good price.

        • Genghis says:

Good point – apart from the vintages. Thanks for heads up on the Tignanello – never had it but does seem like a decent price.

          • Gin and Tonic Please says:

Really enjoyed my trip to Mayfair Pizza on last year’s offer. Sadly didn’t get it this time. Can someone share the exact wording of the offer? Would like to see if Amex CS will add to my account. Thanks

    • mark2 says:

I remember the name of the wine tasting from decades ago. They used to come to your home and try to sell you German wine. No idea if it is the same procedure now.
Harry will probably try it; good luck to them!

      • RussellH says:

The company is Pieroth and they are still doing this. I got a letter inviting me to take them up on it just last week – letter has been sent for recycling.

I did take them up on it once about ten years ago, mainly because I was interested in the promotional offer of a free pair of “binoculars”, actually a cheap opera glass of about the same quality as the wine.

It seemed an appalling deal from both my point of view and from the salesman’s – it seemd that he had to buy all the wine and drive round the area all at his own expense. Presumably he got a pittance in commission on any sales that he made.

  • Yuff says:

I registered for this before Christmas on 5 accounts and they all went through. I’ve had reminders about the offer.
4 BAPP accounts (card holder and supp) and PRG account.
I thought you could use the Hilton offer twice on each card, I may be mistaken about that.

    • Peter K says:

It’s £40 max discount, £20 once per merchant. So £20 for Hilton, £20 for Avis. You can’t get the discount twice on just one card.

  • Mark newstart says:

    Morning All
I am doing a mattress run for my first time this weekend … Any tips would be very useful from you old hands with this being my first time………………. Thanks

    • Rob says:

Check in as usual, go to room, ruffle sheets, steal toiletries and biscuits, put key on desk, leave quietly.

      • Genghis says:

I booked my first ever ‘mattress run’ last night, two nights. First stay I plan to do what Rob said and second stay is the end of the first week of us getting our bathroom refurbished so managed to persuade Mrs G to stay the night and to sample the free breakfast, weekend before Valentines Day.

        Cue @Worzel saying how generous I am…
