It was pointed out last week that our coverage of Virgin Atlantic has been a little thin of late.  I think the chaos around the launch of the new website – which is still not working properly – has been keeping people away as I’ve not had much sent in by readers.

Today I want to run through a few decent offers to boost your Flying Club balance.  There is also a reminder to book BEFORE SUNDAY NIGHT if you want to redeem your miles for Virgin flights at the old prices.

Earn 350 miles visiting No1 Lounges

Virgin has launched a partnership with No1 Lounges to encourage you to book into their lounges at Heathrow Terminal 3, Gatwick North, Gatwick South, Birmingham and Edinburgh.

These are all impressive facilities and well worth a visit before your next trip.  You can enter with a Priority Pass or Lounge Club card (free with Amex Gold) but if you don’t have those then this offer is a decent deal.

Via this page of the No1 Lounges site, you can book any of their lounges for £22.50 (£25 in London).  You will also receive 350 Flying Club miles with your booking.

Note that these offers are per booking so a couple should book separately.

This is a popular offer with a sign-up bonus which varies from 3,000 miles upwards.  It has been as high as 12,000 miles so the current offer is a middling one.

Last chance to redeem miles at the current rates

Last but definitely not least, TOMORROW (Sunday) is the last day to book a Virgin Atlantic redemption using the old redemption table.  Virgin gave two months notice of these changes but it still may have slipped your mind.

Here are the changes to flight redemptions:

Change 1: NO CHANGE to partner redemptions

Let’s get the easy one out of the way first.  The miles required for redemptions on partner airlines or for non-airline partners are not changing.

Change 2:  Peak and off-peak pricing introduced from 16th January

Virgin Atlantic is following British Airways in introducing peak and off-peak redemption pricing. At present, this only appears to apply to redemptions on Virgin and not on partners.

Here are the peak dates for 2017:

31st March – 18th April

22nd June – 6th September

13th December – 3rd January 2018

Change 3:  A new reward chart

The changes are relatively clear:

At off-peak times, the cost of Economy redemptions is cut sharply.  New York drops from 35,000 miles to 20,000 miles for example.  I would caveat that with two points:

Virgin previously ran regular mileage sales which brought down Economy redemptions to roughly these levels, so it isn’t new to be able to fly to New York for circa 20,000 miles

You still need to pay full taxes and charges

The requirement to pay full taxes means that some Economy redemptions will remain a bad deal.  However, others will work well.  I’m pretty sure that, say, Barbados in the February prime tourist season will work out nicely even after you’ve added taxes and charges.

New York in Premium Economy was 55,000 miles at all times.  It remains 55,000 miles on peak dates but is down to just 35,000 miles off-peak.  Similarly, Hong Kong looks like a steal.  It was 80,000 miles return but that has come down to 65,000 miles peak and 45,000 miles off-peak.

The snag here is availability.  Premium Economy is a small cabin so you will never find huge amounts of seats offered up for miles.

Upper Class takes the biggest hit but the changes are not uniform.  For example:

New York – was 80,000 miles return, now 115,000 / 95,000

San Francisco – was 100,000 miles return, now 155,000 / 135,000

Orlando – was 100,000 miles return, now 115,000 / 95,000 (so cheaper off-peak)

Hong Kong – was 120,000 miles return, now 135,000 / 115,000 (so cheaper off-peak)

Dubai – was 80,000 miles return, now 95,000 / 75,000 (so cheaper off-peak)

Delhi – was 100,000 miles return, now 95,000 / 75,000 (cheaper at all times)

Johannesburg – was 100,000 miles return, now 135,000 / 115,000

In general, the US routes have got more expensive whilst other routes have fared better but there exceptions to both of those statements.

Change 4:  New upgrade costs

Finally, we have changes to the way that upgrades are charged. From Monday:

You can upgrade any economy ticket (except sale fares in V, N and O) to Upper Class for 75% of the cost of an Upper Class redemption or to Premium Economy for 50% of the cost of a Premium Economy redemption.  

You can upgrade Premium Economy tickets (not K class) to Upper Class for 50% of the cost of an Upper Class redemption. 

Take overall, these changes are generally bad news but it could have been worse and there are some positive changes.  If you want to lock in the old prices, you only have 48 hours left.

    Re: Lounge Access, I have just received my first Gold Amex card. How do I obtain the two free complimentary lounge access passes? Do I just show my gold card at the reception of a qualifying lounge, or do I need to apply for a specific membership card?

      A lounge club card will automatically be sent to you

      The lounge club membership card will turn up automatically and you show that at the door. Think mine turned up promptly, within a week or two.

      If you need the lounge club passes urgently you could call lounge club and they should be able to give our generate your account details for you and you could then access lines via lounge club app.. I done this for my PP account..

    Did anyone actually get the 10% clubcard bonus from last quarter? They are insisting it was for new clubcard transfers only (i.e. You have never converted before) but I was convinced it didn’t say that originally but I didn’t take a screenshot!

      I got the 10℅ after a long time after original miles credited (had them converted before) Tesco said it was a Virgin promo and then Virgin blamed it being busy on new website. It appeared some weeks later as a manual entry

      actually a 6 month membership is looking very attractive – for £15.50 you get 6 Dragonpass lounge entries (=No1) & the UK and European RAC Comprehensive Breakdown Cover

      which I pay for anyway, alternating between AA & RAC to get the best rates. It pretty much makes the lounge passes half price or even free, – & since I swear I won’t BOB, I guess I’d be giving WHSmith or Boots a fair bit of business otherwise plus a swift couple in one of the bars, so can factor in that saving.

      The other benefits of Travel Plus Pack are nice to have but just hopefully peace of mind elements.

        Wouldn’t getting entry this way be as hit and miss as using lounge club/priority pass? Unless you pay them £5 (or buy a glass of champagne for £7.50), you risk being turned away for the lounge being “too full”

          depends on your Terminal, I guess. I generally use T3 and Plaza Premium told me at Xmas they had not yet had to turn away anybody, that was after being open 6 weeks – capacity 120. I have been turned away from No1 before.

    To retain customers, (esp those from the regions) Virgin could do with…

    1) Improving consistency of service, ie improve haphazard disembarkation policy.
    2) Have more quality customer services (5+ week wait for a mediocre lackluster reply)
    3) Allow single ticket redemptions from the regions using miles for all sectors, ie have a proper code share with Fly(may)BE, this would also allow Pax from INV-MAN-International to not pay APD as you can with BA via INV-LHR

          The issue is trying to get a codeshare flight on a redemption ticket – SQ didn’t seem up for it (or quite understand what I was meaning) when I discussed it by email. Plus the added confusion of online booking to get 15% miles discount with them…

          Would be nice if VS offered it, but they never replied to my Tweets!

    I had a rather confusing call with flying club yesterday. I was trying to get clarification on delta conversion Edinburgh- Orlando ( never any VA availability from Glasgow) instead she offered me Flybe cash flight to Manchester plus points to Orlando. Distracted I asked for information- her system told her that my 42000 conversion in peak would be 40000? She was surprised as well – not sure if this is an error or if they have changed the rates ( this would match with a delta flight conversion to ny)

    Advice -unlike most of you I am trying to keep cost to a minimum rather than maximising points value:
    Family of 4 from Manchester – was waiting on points sale in February ( if there is one?) to afford economy out upper class back. Only a few hundred pounds to do return leg by upper class 280000 miles points sale (20%?) 244k

    As above other option is using similar amount of points to fly economy delta from Edinburgh for similar price. Any experience of delta from regions? ( old aeroplanes? )

      I don’t quite follow what you mean about conversion – do you just mean redemption?

      Haven’t flown DL for years myself but they get a decent name for their in-flight service.

      Not fussed about how it looks as long as it works, and there are still so many glitches it’s untrue. No sign of any fixes yet either.

      Thumbs down from me. Can live with the changes to the points, that was inevitable but the website ‘update’ has not been project managed properley and that’s a poor show.

      However I’m bu99ered if I can get it to work on my Android tablet, I’m already logged in and it offers me a login link??? When I click on it, it still doesn’t direct me to the page, will try on PC later..

        Nope, looking like the Miles Booster link is a circular link back to Flying Club homepage, where it allows you to find out about earning miles, and a thing called Miles Booster with a link to login (again).

        I think I had trouble with this a couple of years ago, going round in loops never finding it. In the end, I emailed or messaged Virgin and they sorted it out for me. I told them if I couldn’t find it, nobody else would have a hope and they needed to fix the website. Seems they must have broken it again!
