Even more things you need to know about the BA Amex 2-4-1 voucher

Yesterday I ran a long article entitled ‘Everything you need to know about the BA Amex 2-4-1 voucher’ which attracted a lot of feedback.

Looking at the comments during the day, it was quite clear that it was NOT everything you needed to know.

I updated the article during the day but if you read Head for Points by email or only saw the article in the morning then you would have missed the additions.

Here are some of the additional comments asked by readers, together with my replies:

Are there any easy ways of reducing the taxes payable?

Not easily, because you must start a 2-4-1 journey in the UK and thus incur Air Passenger Duty.  There are two options though:

Start your trip in Jersey, because Jersey is outside the UK for APD purposes but inside the UK for 2-4-1 purposes.  If you fly Jersey – Gatwick – Heathrow – XXXXX your taxes charge will be a lot lower.  You cannot stopover in London for more than 24 hours or full APD is charged regardless.

Start your trip in Inverness.  There is no APD out of Inverness.

There is also no APD out of Newquay but as BA does not fly there this does not help you.  On a standard (non-241) Avios redemption, flying Newquay – Gatwick (Flybe) – XXXXX (BA) would avoid APD.

What small print do I need to know?

I added the following:

There are no circumstances under which you can ask BA to extend a 241 voucher.  Don’t waste your time.

You cannot use ‘part pay with Avios’ in conjunction with a 2-4-1 voucher.  Your booking must be ‘100% Avios’.

‘Gold Upgrade For Two’ vouchers (issued when you earn 2,500 tier points) can be used in conjunction with a 2-4-1 voucher.

You will not earn Avios or tier points on your redemption flight in line with standard Avios redemptions.

Your flights will not be cancelled if you cancel your BA Amex card after making your 2-4-1 booking.

You can fly a different class on the outbound to the return.  However, both passengers must travel together in the same class.  You cannot fly in First and book your companion in Club World if there is only 1 First reward seat available.

BA Amex 241 companion voucher

Can I travel with an infant or book without my baby being born yet?

Ye.  For infant (under 2) bookings you pay 10% of the Avios and 10% of the taxes of an adult passenger.  This can be booked online.

If your child is not yet born, book for the two adults and then call to add the baby when it has arrived and has a name!  These rules apply to standard Avios redemptions as well.

If I cancel my BA Amex card after earning the voucher, is it lost?

No.  It is not clear if you would lose the voucher if you booked a redemption and then cancelled it – would the voucher be reissued if you no longer had a BA Amex?  A recent HFP reader who did this found his voucher was returned.

If I downgrade from the Premium Plus to the free card after earning my voucher, do I retain the 2-year expiry period?

Yes.

Can I change my class of travel if seats open up in a higher class after I’ve booked?

Yes.  Standard Avios change fees apply of £35 per person, plus of course the additional Avios.  You need to call BA to do this because of the 2-4-1 voucher being involved.

Conclusion

As I wrote yesterday, there are still two weeks left to apply for the British Airways American Express cards before the sign-up bonuses drop.  If the idea of earning a companion voucher appeals, this is as good a time as any to apply.

The bonus on the free card is increased from 3,000 Avios to 9,000 Avios points.  £1,000 of spending within three months is required.  The application form is here.

The bonus on the Premium Plus is increased from 18,000 Avios to 25,000 Avios points.  £3,000 of spending within three months is required.  The application form is here.

If you have any further questions about the voucher, please ask them in the comments.

  • Liz says:

The other point not mentioned in the article and the question I asked Rob recently is that you cannot have other non BA connecting flights on your ticket when using the 241 eg flying from say SIN to KUL to get a BA flight if there is no availability from SIN. This would need to be done on a separate ticket. I wasn’t sure about this point but it has to all be BA flights.

    • Alan says:

Yes, the GUF2 vouchers are slightly different in this respect in that if you can find the right TA you can get non-BA flights on your booking, albeit only the BA ones will be upgraded.

  • CHRIS CANNON says:

Here’s a challenge (hopefully a one off) Want to get the exact dates for flights next year using Amex 2-4-1. Wife getting new passport and changing name mid this year. Do I create her with new surname in friends part of BAEC account as she currently exists in her own right in BAEC and then once new passport etc comes, update BAEC and then add these details to booking?

Also – anyone had any experience of how easy it is to change your BAEC Name due to marriage?

    • Anna says:

I would book it in the new name, you don’t have to add passport details for a while yet. can’t see why someone couldn’t exist as two separate people with two surnames on your household or F & F account.

      • CHRIS CANNON says:

Thanks, that’s what I have done – just gotta wait for flight release

  • Ade says:

This might be extremely rare but I thought I’d mention it anyway. I added a return leg to my 241 booking over the phone. Everything seemed to go smoothly with the return flight showing in manage my booking. I posted on here around a month later asking when payment is usually taken and was reassured it can just take a while. I then forgot all about it and never noticed if payment had been taken or not. The other day I went to check what seats were available for the return leg but could not access the seating plan. I rang up to enquire why and was told the return leg was never ‘queued’ and therefore not ticketed. My booking was in a kind of limbo as the return leg was never sent to be processed. I believe it is now all sorted but I’m not sure what would have happened if I had turned up for the return flight without noticing this problem!

    • CHRIS CANNON says:

      Yep have seen this too

    • rams1981 says:

I had this for my return from Buenos Airies. They called my wife to confirm the card number before eventually charging us last week. I’m not convinced they deducted the Avios required for the trip however…

  • Martin says:

Has any one else noticed how few F Avios seats are available at t-355 compared to last year? Is it to do with upgrading full fare J offer?

  • Tayo says:

    O/T

I was currently on a BA flight that got departed 24 hours after its normal time due to mechanical fault on the plane. It was a 2-4-1 redemption in CW. We (2 adults and an infant) got on the plane at about 10pm and were finally told at 5am (the next day) that the flight would be cancelled but BA put us up in a hotel at 7am and we flew the next day…any grounds for a claim under EUR law??

    • the_real_a says:

Yes the fact you used a 2 for 1 is irrelevant in a delay/cancellation. You are owed 2 x 600 EUR

      • Kevin says:

Yes this happened to me. 15 hour delay out of BOS. There were 4 of us in F using 2 vouchers. We each got 600 EUR

      • Rob says:

There is an online form for ba.com.

Anika currently has a similar claim in from a Frankfurt delay last Friday so we’ll get some evidence of how long it takes. My brother said he got his money within a week in February.

(Do you reckon I should ask her for the money, as it was a business trip?!)

        • Michael Jennings says:

I put in a claim to BA for a delay for a flight in August. It took about a week to get a reply saying that yes, I was entitled to compensation, and I received a cheque in the mail shortly after that.

          • mark2 says:

out of interest did they end you Euros or convert it?

          • mark2 says:

out of interest did they send you euros or convert it?

          • John says:

If you have a euro bank account you can ask them to send it in euros

Otherwise they will just give you a GBP equivalent, which would be sensible if you only have GBP accounts

          • Nate1309 says:

When I was refunded for a 4 hour delay on Flybe, the money had to be put in my account in Euro.

          • Alan says:

In that situation (I had a big USD cheque to pay in one time) I’ve found Metro Bank to be excellent – no forex fees charged and reasonable exchange rate.

        • the_real_a says:

There will be a slight delay as you need to decline BA`s enhanced offer of “38k Avios compensation” in lei of the 600Euro by return email 🙂

      • pauldb says:

Or 3x €600. I assume an infant is still classed as a passenger. 🙂

      • Tayo says:

Thank you very much for your response.
I will contact BA and ask for compensation for 3 people…

        • marly says:

What if it is due to the fog? No compensation right? We had a 24h delay from London to Lima via Madrid and had to sleep in Madrid to take next day flight…

  • h1tvd says:

I am new to BA 241 so bear with me, if I want to book EDI – JFK with American Airlines, I can see the flight on the BA website for cash but not reward flights (for any dates, not just the ones I’m interested in), only seems to show the BA flights , am I doing something wrong or is it just not bookable on miles?

    • Andrew* says:

      241 must use BA planes…

      • h1tvd says:

ok, but what if I want to just use miles then?

        • Andrew* says:

          Good question – sorry, don’t know…
Guess would be no rewards seats…
Why the AA requirement? Won’t Avios rates be higher flying with partners than BA?

          • h1tvd says:

AA fly direct from Edinburgh, otherwise would have to go BA via London, seems lack of availaiblity is the reason they don’t show on BA website…..

    • Alan says:

241 redemptions are only on BA planes (aka BA metal) – see yesterday’s article!

For just a straight redemption, you certainly can – the problem is poor availability, especially on these direct routes that avoid LHR. You might find the AA website easier to search on, if there’s saver availability with then then you should be able to book it with Avios.

      • h1tvd says:

just checked the AA website, found some saver availability, plugged the dates into the website and BINGO, AA flights are there, thank you Alan, can’t use a 241 but I don’t have one yet anyway lol but can use avios.

        • Andrew* says:

          So is that:

          1) find it on AA website
          2) plug specific dates into BA website
          3) book on BA website

          • Alan says:

Yes – the AA website is generally better at searching for availability over a range of dates.

  • Simon says:

Any idea why BA showing no flights to Maldives from April to September?? Only indirect flights

    • Kevin says:

I could be wrong but I don’t think BA fly to the Maldives all year round.

    • Anon says:

Because there’s no availability, it’s has to be one of the most popular routes going.

      • LaineyLing says:

Its a seasonal route and also very very popular.
We managed to get a return flight from the Maldives that appeared to have been ‘stranded’ (i.e. one return date but no outgoing dates) and will tie it in with a trip to Sri Lanka. we will fly to Chennai (BA 241 CW) and then to Sri Lanka (Sri Lanka redemption), spend a week in Sri Lanka, pay for cash fare between Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Then fly home (BA 241 CW Maldives LGW).

Anyone know why BA doesn’t fly first to Maldives? I would have thought given honeymooners and holiday budgets that this could work. or are most first flyers business travellers with generous corporate accounts?!

    • Mark says:

BA only fly there from Oct to Mch – seasonal

      • Kevin says:

To me it seems odd that they don’t fly there over Easter (unless Easter is in March presumably). There are quite a few ways of getting there indirect. We are headed there for the Easter holidays via Dubai but in Y sadly.

  • DeliberatelyAnon says:

“You will not earn Avios or tier points on your redemption flight” – however sometimes you do 😉

I had a 2-4-1 mixed class redemption Club out/WTP back. We’re both exec club Gold. We both earned Avios & TPs as though we’d paid cash, but we hadn’t other than for the taxes/fees/etc/etc. It was booked over the phone.

To add to the icing already on the cake, we were upgraded on the inbound.

    • CV3V says:

had you made any changes to the booking? Sometimes that can result in a change in fare class resulting in earning points (third paryy info)

      • @mkcol says:

Nope. Booked as stated above, nothing changed at any point. Was showing the Avios & TPs from day one in MMB.

        • marly says:

Yeah it happens all the times in South America, using avios to fly LAN and always get TP and airmiles, cant complaint 🙂
