Farce as new BA Gatwick South lounge remains closed due to failed ‘life safety’ test

Wednesday was the day that British Airways moved its Gatwick operations over to the South Terminal.

The good news is that check in seemed to be working fine when I was there, with no sign of delays.  To be honest, using a bit of wood to separate the Club World and First Class check-in desks is not the most elegant solution but it does the job (and, in truth, it looks better than my photo suggests!):

What I didn’t like is that BA has taken over the ‘A-C’ desk area.  It is quite a walk from the train station to those desks, and you have to pass the huge number of Thomson, Norwegian etc desks on the way.  More annoyingly, once you’ve dropped your bag, you need to double-back on yourself to take the escalator up to departures.  Anyone with just hand baggage doesn’t need to go anywhere near the BA check-in area.

Security was also swift.  The Premium line merges into the front of the standard line, so there should not be any chance of finding that the main line is quicker!

The bad news is that the British Airways Gatwick South lounges have failed their ‘life safety’ electrical tests and have not been allowed to open.  A staff member told me that this was apparently known a few days ago but the news was not released.  There is no timetable yet for their opening.

A number of contingency plans are in place:

First and Gold passengers on all flights and premium ticketed passengers on the Bermuda, New York and Jersey services are using the Gatwick South No 1 Clubrooms which I reviewed here.  I should warn you, however, that they were already restricting access due to overcrowding when I was there and I had to use my press clout to get in.

All other eligible passengers are using the old Virgin Atlantic lounge in Gatwick South which has been renamed Speedbird Lounge but otherwise is as Virgin left it last night!

There is also the very impressive new No 1 Lounge which Anika reviewed here and which, if you have a Priority Pass, may be a better bet

As my tour of the BA Gatwick South lounge wasn’t going to happen, I ended up in the Clubrooms.  This is an impressive facility when used for small groups, which is its intended purpose, but is not ideal for business travellers as there is no solo seating.

The food and drink remains excellent, however, with Eggs Royale and champagne promptly delivered to my table:

I was a bit disappointed that Virgin was ending their Chicago route this year, but at least they are now adding Seattle so it opens up another redemption opportunity.

We now await the food hygiene rating from FHRS

Hope that BA have the new lounges open next Tues for my flight to Antigua!! Fingers crossed.

OT. Re booking with IHG and getting 1000 MilesMore per hotel booking.

Robs says: “Compared to the generous points opportunities with the Accelerate promotion, plus the fact that points count towards status, taking miles is rarely good value.”

Does the above mean that if you take the 1000 miles the stay doesn’t count towards Accelerate?

  • the real harry1 says:

BA have now definitively told me (just the first weedy CS person of course) that we cannot get more than 1000 Avios per person compo for F&B withdrawn, for flights booked before the F&B changes were announced.

Next step is to give them my final written response, which may be styled as my notice before action – this gives them 8 weeks to respond to my dispute.

Don’t bother wishing me luck as with my screenshots of their offer and BA’s presumed desire not to get negative PR for scamming the consumer (I have various journalists lined up already) – this is a foregone conclusion.

Even if I lost (impossible) it will cost them £thousands & cost me next to nothing.

    • Leo says:

It’s been years since I’ve been in the small claims so I’m watching with interest -feet up and a glass of wine…

      • the real harry1 says:

Naturally I have slightly more at stake but not really much at all.

So I am also feet up & glass of wine.

BA will lose so much credibility when the journalists report on them cheating the consumer! It will make me laugh. You can’t advertise free F&B included in the ticket price, withdraw it then say hard luck. Same as advertising a free 23kg suitcase included in the price, then later saying: sorry that’s an extra £40.

        • Sussex bantam says:

Just don’t sign a gagging order Harry – we all want to know how it ends !

          • Alan says:

Even if Harry1 signs one, I’m sure Squills will let us know what happens…

    • Nick says:

Fairplay to you Harry. Good luck.

    • Alan says:

We still look forward to hearing the outcome/progress though. Hopefully you’ll get 18k or so to make up for not taking the Avis rental 😛 (sorry, couldn’t resist, I didn’t bother going for that one either!)

  • David says:

The main problem I have with the places app is that with 16 of the badges already earned, it’s virtually impossible for me to get the rest of them without some grand world tour… 🙁

  • Leo says:

When this BA lounge is open and I do stress the when – I presume that the CX flight to Hong Kong will switch to using this new lounge? I don’t fancy using the No 1 Lounge which is what they are currently using. There was some chat somewhere that the new BA lounge might have capacity issues – which could I suppose lead them to limiting the lounge to BA use only. I think I’d probably use the “speed bird” lounge than No 1. Am I being too harsh?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Oneworld rules mean they would have to no?

      • Leo says:

        I had assumed.

      • Rob says:

You’d be allowed in the Club lounge. There is a chance that BA has decided that the First lounge is a special sanctuary, like The Concorde Room, and so exempt but there is only a 1% chance that will happen.

  • Stuart F says:

It’s quite remarkable that BA have taken over the Virgin Clubhouse and managed to turn what used to be an elegant haven into something resembling a school canteen in just 12 hours. I can’t put my finger on exactly what’s wrong with it but the loss of the spa equipment and all the self-service bits cluttering up the surfaces don’t help.
