Bits: Amex Platinum USA goes metallic, £19 Monarch deal, Uber hits Chichester

News in brief:

The US Amex Platinum card will be made of metal

The US version of the American Express Platinum charge card has been relaunched this week.  The fee rises $100 to $550 but is potentially offset by $15 of Uber credit, automatically added to your account every month.

The interesting bit was that the card will be made of metal. This isn’t the first time that US credit cards have been made of metal, but this is the first one where there has been a chance that a mainstream metallic card will make it over to the UK.

At a point in its history when Amex Platinum has become a bit mainstream, this could be the kick the UK card needs to put it back on the map.  We can but hope.

New £19 Monarch sale

We don’t usually cover Monarch on Head for Points – at least not since they stopped being an Avios redemption partner – but this new deal looked good.

Up to 9th March, Monarch is selling a limited number of £19 seats to Barcelona, Venice, Rome, Lisbon and Gibraltar.  The travel periods are 4th March to 30th April with the key Easter period of 29th March to 10th April excluded.

You can find out more on the Monarch website here.  Depending on route, you can fly from Gatwick, Luton, Birmingham, Leeds Bradford or Manchester.

Uber launches in Chichester

Uber is now in over 20 UK towns and cities and added Chichester to the list yesterday.  At the moment, only the cheaper uberX service is available.  It adds to the existing services in Portsmouth, Havant and Brighton.

If you live in the area (or anywhere else in the UK which has Uber) download the app and add promo code ‘headforpoints’ after signing up.  You’ll get a free first ride worth up to £15 which gets you quite a long way with uberX.

    OT: Hilton Honors Visa card.

Any restrictions – in theory or practice – on what you have to spend your money on to get the 2,500 points x4 at Hilton hotels? Mine have not tracked after dinner at the Hilton KL and I am going round in circles with clueless customer service agents (four and counting).

Routinely extremely variable in how well these post. Have you formally complained via secured messaging? I just requested the equivalent amount of cash to buy the points myself and they paid up 😉

  • BA-Flyer says:

Quick question about IHG accelerate. I booked a stay on the app in December, and completed the stay in January. The stay has contributed towards ‘Stay More, Earn More’, but not towards ‘travel with the IHG app’. IHG say this is correct, and the stay needed to be booked in January to count.

Anyone else experienced this? It seems strange the stay qualifies for one target, but not the other.

    • Peter K says:

There has been a lot of talk of this on here and it seems that what they are saying is correct. The t’s and c’s have deliberately obfuscated things so that it is harder to meet the targets. Annoying but as they are the t’s and c’s what can we do but get annoyed.

      • Fenny says:

I have a “book 3 stays with the app” target and a “book a points and cash” target. I have 2 stays, both booked on the app, one cash, one P&C. Only the cash booking is showing as booked via the app. I don;t mind that it’s not counted in the “stay 8 nights” target, as I probably won’t hit that one and don’t need it for the completion bonus.

O/T – anyone experienced Gold card sign-up bonus MR points (22k from referral) being applied early after achieving only 10% of £2k spend within couple of weeks of getting card? Would you transfer points out and close account, or would you keep working toward £2k target?

    • andrew -a says:

I have just had 22k added and have only spent £1500.
I will just leave them though for now as I will easily hit the £2000 spend before mid April. I am keeping hold of the card to refer my OH later in the year.

      • Scott says:

OK, looks there could have been a system error if it’s affecting multiple account holders, so I expect it will be noticed and the points taken back.

      • Sundar says:

Move it, I say 🙂 You are anyways planning to earn it rightfully, so you may as well enjoy an earlier Xmas now…

  • xcalx says:

OT but Amex related. I applied via a referral from mrs xcalx from her Plat account and changed the choice of card to SPG She didn’t receive any referral points when I got the card. I have just noticed the following on the Amex referral page.

“If your friend applies for an alternative Card, the reward you receive may vary.”

    Have not noticed this before.

    • graham says:

Have definitely done this successfully for a platinum to gold referral

      • Genghis says:

That’s different as it’s the same reward currency family and so officially permitted

Need a little help please ref Hilton Visa

Is there anyway to see the Honors points breakdown
How long does the free night take to post
Does the 2500 points get delayed and is it shown on your visa statement or added when points are transferred

    OT – Nationwide Simply Rewards
Just saw 6% CB on NW visa card with simply rewards

  • roger says:

    Silly me, it is Emirates

  • roger says:

There is also Hertz 20% discount which seems to work for car rental with Accor discount code CDP 840267 for booking before 31 May.

Plus there may be 3x points too.
