When I wrote about the closure of the IHG Rewards Club credit cards issued by Barclaycard yesterday I suggested that, if you will not now be able to hit the £10,000 target for earning your free night, you ask for compensation.

My suggestion was:

Work out how much you will have spent in your card year by 20th April (eg £6,000)

Assume that you would have redeemed your free night voucher at a top InterContinental worth £250

Make a claim for the % of £250 you have reached – in my example, 6/10th of £250 which is £150

A reader did just that, emailing the Executive Office (EO@barclaycard.co.uk) yesterday morning. He asked for a sum based on the formula above.  Seven minutes later he had a reply confirming that he will receive the full amount requested.

If you have no chance of triggering your £10,000 voucher before 20th April, you may want to do the same.

OT: Re: Laithwaites 1000 avios points offer
    1) how long did it take for peoples points to post (either 250 or 1000)?
    2) I’m aware a few people reported problems (only 250 posting, with assurance that the remaining 750 would post within 14 days), so any updates on that??

    • the real harry1 says:

mine haven’t posted at all, might be worth an email

got a feeling that they will try not to give 1000 Avios as I’m a repeat customer – but T&Cs did not mention this so will stand my ground

      • the real harry1 says:

email them if you didn’t get the Avios – it seems they had a system glitch:
[I am sorry that your Avios were not added to your account as promised. It appears that when the order downloaded onto our system it didn't add the correct offer details, as such I have set you up with a BA account under customer number xxx to allow you to earn points.] – fairly sure this means they have set up a new a/c at Laithwaites’ end not a new BAEC a/c 🙂

    • Andy says:

I got delivery last week and emailed to say no points had posted. I got a reply to say that they will go on within the next 14 days and if they don’t to contact them back.

    • AndyGWP says:

Thanks both – I dropped them an email and got the following:

We have now requested your Avios be accredited to you. Please note these may take up to 14 working days to appear on your statement.

    • Toby says:

My points , 1,000 , posted the day after delivery 🙂

  • Stu N says:

OT – domestic connections on BA Avios redemptions. Spoke to YouFirst for a summer booking in F/J long haul using Amex 2-4-1 as our connections were rebooked into EuroTraveller last week. The agent explained they had been told that policy was for free connections to book into economy but there were a few anomolies with historic bookings.

She had a look and outcome was that we got moved to Club Europe for 4,500 Avios, £70 change fee and a REFUND of £173. Agent sent it for checking and phoned me back half an hour later to confirm. Didn’t have the brass neck to request waiving of the change fee!

Only thing I can think of was that something has gone wrong with the original booking when the return was added. Happy with the outcome anyway, wouldn’t have paid much for the upgrade but if they are going to give me money I’ll take it!

    • Andrew* says:

That’s not how the booking system looks (for me) if I look at a dummy booking:

      NCL-HKG or NCL-JFK

If I select ‘economy’ or ‘premium economy’ then the domestic shows as ET
If I select ‘business’ or ‘first’ then domestic shows as CE

So not sure if start airport has an effect on things…

(Strangely, my wife has a PE long-haul cash ticket booked and the domestic connection has booked into CE)

      • Andrew* says:

Same results for me starting at either Belfast or Edinburgh…

        • Stu N says:

I’m starting from EDI. I’ve had theee different answers from three different agents, ranging from not possible, to £142 and no Avios, to 4,500 Avios and -£102…

The agent was referring to historic bookings only, not new bookings – sorry for not making that clear. I guess it didn’t matter if you booked into X or U until now, and most were in X which you are stuck with.

The whole thing is a shambles, I have a cash CW booking later in the year made before the announcement that we have 2 cancelled domestic legs each way and 2 seats each for the live booking.

          • Andrew* says:

I have historic bookings in CW and F where the domestics have all booked into CE…

Must be a new kind of logic…

  • Boi says:

Pity with parent pay….I always find paying fees less painful when I know I am getting points back (silly I know).

Does anyone know if Leeds grammar accept credit cards? We are considering sending our eldest there next year for secondary school and I am trying to find a consolation price.

    • vol says:

      Phone them up and ask.

If the answer is “no”, tell them that Amex acceptance for fee payments is the primary consideration when choosing a school for your child.

      • the real harry1 says:

        🙂

btw Boi – you’re too late

      • Boi says:

I hope you did realise in my post that I am trying to find “consolation ” price ! I didn’t say Amex acceptance is the deciding factor

        • vol says:

          Boi – you didn’t say it, and I didn’t mean it… 😉

  • Nathan says:

Parent Pay to drop AMEX? Gah! There go some easy points 🙁

    • Genghis says:

Looks absolutely fantastic. Why do I keep flying BA? I might not mind flying indirect to experience that. Any more info on timescales? Which aircraft etc?

      • Brighton Belle says:

Send a link to Mr Cruz for his consideration when he is signing off todays cost cutting enhancement.

      • AndyR says:

I heard the 777-300’s are meant to be retrofitted first. New A350’s should come with it.

      • Alan says:

Agreed. On Finnair A350 just now – superb, streets ahead of BA!

        • Genghis says:

So top opinion of AY A350? We’re thinking of doing HEL and TLL as a mini break with AY to/from HEL and BA to/from TLL. I can’t decide best way to go. Going HEL first works better on timings but costs more in taxes and I’d miss the sauna in the lounge at HEL. Any thoughts?

          • Alan says:

Yep, extremely impressed with AY A350. In Hilton Tallinn Park just now, lovely property, great staff and Exec Lounge – fantastic suite upgrade!

Going to spend a couple of days sightseeing (lightly snowing this evening, everything looking beautiful in the Old Town), then catching ferry to Helsinki for a couple of days there before flying back A350 again. Lose a few TPs but means no early flight needed from TLL 🙂

          • the real harry1 says:

post a pic of the suite

            nice one

          • Yan says:

Certainly superior than CW (but how who isn’t nowadays…) but not the best reverse herringbone products on the market, more like a budget option compare to the similar seats on CX/QR/AA/AF. Main criticism from frequent AY travellers is the tight ‘foot coffin’ which is not ideal for long-haul red-eye flights. Nevertheless it is a great choice for intra-europe trip to HEL.

          • Alan says:

There is a bit of a foot coffin with AY, but nowhere near as bad as the one with LX!

    • Cate says:

Thank you Clive – looks wonderful!

    • Mr Dee says:

Nice but that video looks super computer generated!

      • Rob says:

I think Anika has some real-world photos, we shall see tomorrow!

          • TGLoyalty says:

looks great, wonder what the 777-300 refurb plan actually is, first plane in operation etc

          • TGLoyalty says:

Looks like “The first Qatar Airways jet to fly the Qsuites will be a factory-fresh Boeing 777-300ER on the Doha-London route from June.”

          • Rob says:

Given Qatar’s track record of switching aircraft around, you’d be a mug to book onto this for the sole purposes of trying it out though. When I did our 787 review I think we rebooked four times!

          • TGLoyalty says:

Ofcourse but no harm hoping for some good news for flights already booked much later in the year

          • Mr Dee says:

Good video better to see what it might actually be like than their video

        • Jon says:

From the video, I’m guessing careful seat selection will be the order of the day. Looks like there are two window-side configurations (?) plus the two mid-block arrangements. I wonder how loud things will get with four people facing each other for dinner together, or doing a business presentation etc… Talking of dinner, is it just me or do the tables look a bit high?

Does look good though, and raises the bar.

BTW Rob – Instagram seems to insist on login before giving access to photos; not all of us have or want Instagram accounts 😉

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Shame I rather liked the QR 777s. Found the seats very comfortable for sleeping and generally very spacious for a couple (our window seat had four windows to itself!). Not great for single travellers though I imagine.

  • James says:

OT – a link to Qatars twitter featuring new Qatar business class https://twitter.com/qatarairways/status/839421320215539712

    • James says:

      Someone beat me to it!
I wonder if this means a big lack of deals in the near future… I’m waiting to book but it’s all a bit quiet!

  • jamie says:

OT, but of interest to all churners out there.

no need at all to wait for the so called “6 months” between holding amex cards

had posted in the past that I churn BA and platinum at 2-3 month intervals and have never missed a welcome bonus. well, just done my first spg amex churn , 6 weeks after closing last account, and have received welcome bonus after spending a grand.

    • the real harry1 says:

      interesting tidbit

depends if you are worried about getting blacklisted or not IMV

      • the real harry1 says:

Genghis changes his churning plans to 3 months frequency, doubling everything at a stroke 🙂

        • Genghis says:

🙂 I’m taking it easy now (till June). No credit card applications since Dec. I’m getting itchy feet tho

  • Pid says:

OT – Can you get the BA amex and the lloyds avios card at same time? My understanding is that you can but a college of mine said he was refused the BA amex last year and when he enquired why he was told it was beaches he has the lloyds one. Seems strange to me as they are issued by different people. What to know so that he can try again via my referral!

    • Genghis says:

You can have them at the same time as both me and my wife have done it.

      • Genghis says:

However, he could still be refused because he has another credit card (which just happens to be the Lloyds avios card) for all manner of reasons – i.e. Amex may not like his potentially high credit limit / utilisation (whatever) on the Lloyds avios card.

        • Pid says:

Thank you, that is what I thought. Hopefully he will be successful when he re applies. 🙂

      • AndyGWP says:

Yeah, to confirm, I have both BA amex and Lloyds 🙂
