How Brad is flying around the world for 116,000 airline miles + £285 + $30

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

In 2015 reader Brad shared with us how he was going to fly around the world in economy for 112,000 airline miles and just £173 of taxes. One and a half years later he has decided to do a similar trip.

Since there was a lot of interest in the article we wrote on this last trip, we thought you’d be interested in this one.  Whilst we don’t spend a lot of time on Head for Points focusing on economy redemptions, they can be good value when you don’t fly BA and don’t incur heavy taxes and charges.

This is what he is doing this time:

itinery map

Manchester – Madrid
£30 Iberia (cash)

Madrid – Lima
25,000 Avios + £90 tax

Lima – Cusco
4,500 Avios + £8 tax

Cusco – Lima
4,500 Avios + £6 tax

Lima – Buenos Aires – Santiago De Chile
12,500 Delta SkyMiles + $30 tax

Santiago De Chile – Easter Island – Papeete
25,000 Avios + £32 tax

Brad notes that this one is tricky one to get.  When you search for 2 separate one-way tickets for the route they are not available.  However when you search for SCL – PPT you can easily find availability.  The downside is that you only get 10 hours in Easter Island on a stopover.

Papeete – Auckland – Shanghai – Beijing
15,000 United MileagePlus miles + £35 tax

Beijing – Hong Kong
10,000 Avios + £12 tax

Hong Kong – London Heathrow – Manchester
19,500 Avios + £72 tax

He is covering 31,439 miles in total

distance

This comes to a total of : 88,500 Avios + 12,500 Delta SkyMiles + 15,000 United Airlines MileagePlus = 116,000 airline miles + £285 + $30.

If you wanted to emulate this routing, the Delta miles could be obtained from an American Express Membership Rewards transfer.  It would also be bookable via other Skyteam airlines.  There is no easy way to pick up United miles (there is no bonus on their credit card and the transfer rate from Starwood is 2:1) but, again, you could use another Star Alliance airline – albeit for potentially more miles.

this appears to be base don United’s charts booking pre October 2016

    • Rob says:

Yes, may have been. I sat on this for a while to use whilst I was away.

      • Brad says:

        Nothing has change PPT-PEK 15k in Y , 30k in J , PPT-TYO 12.5k in Y and 25k in J

  • will says:

Still amazing though- and available in business at least partially 15k miles econ / 30k J plus £28.60 tax

  • filipino_chino says:

Well done Brad, i was impressed last time around! I thought i was doing well getting to the andaman islands for Christmas… booked yesterday.

    • s879 says:

Did you book via miles as thinking of heading that way in Xmas holidays too.

    • Genghis says:

I’m also interested in your routing and prices (£££ / miles) to the Andaman Islands.

      • gomigo says:

For Port Blair (Andaman Islands) you can do the following route which is easier to get and cost less miles & £££.

London – Madras / MAA (India) – Port Blair / IXZ (India)

LHR – MAA 16250 avios (off peak) or 25000 avios (peak) + £220 one way on Y and 62500 avios (off peak) or 75000 (peak) +£365 Opposite direction will cost only £110 tax+surcharge.

MAA – IXZ 9550 Etihad Miles on partner Jet Airways. It is a short 2hrs flight which will cost £10 on tax+surcharge one way. Cash ticket on this route will be £230 return.

LHR – MAA can be reached via CMB (colombo) too using Avios on Sri Lankan airways or through Emirates / Etihad but it will burn more miles & adds 4 to 5 hrs to travel time including short transit.

Andaman Islands is an amazing place to visit!!

        • Brembo87 says:

          Hi Gomigo,
I was also looking to visit Andaman Islands in the near feature.
Could you please recommend a descent hotel or area that we should visit?

It looks like Phuket pretty much, but i guess its a different culture?

Genghis- do you have a Tweeter account?

          • Genghis says:

            Yes. genghis1232

          • Brembo87 says:

            @Genghis- Twitter I meant, TYPO

          • gomigo says:

Havelock Island is best place to stay. You can try Munjoh ocean resort if you get availability, it will be around £150/night depends on period. Xmas period will be busy. Next possible option could be Symphony beach resort (read reviews before booking).. Andamans is different from mainland India. Lush green mountains, white sandy beaches and rainforest makes it famous tourist destination outside mainland. Lots of history behind every site in Andamans backdated to British India era. It is one of the safest place!!

        • Genghis says:

Good info. I looked into it a while ago and saw pictures of the elephants swimming the sea. Looks great. Only worry is that it is still India = hassle + dodge tummy. Any experience anyone?

          • Mark says:

I am staying in Havelock Island…

I booked MAN > AUH > MAA using miles on Etihad – I got 25K from the credit card bonus * 2 then i used the Amex transfer 20 or 25% bonus on transfer about a year ago…

Some miles were expiring so i had to use them… cost me:
Miles 42,046 and £146.94 in Y (can get it lower in mileage, but i am flying in December).

I thought 9550 (one way) to the islands is a waste of the miles, so i am paying cash for this leg… (paying £320 for 3 adults and 1 child, based on the old exchange rate of 100 to the pound – got an India bank account / debit card).

I am going to stay on havelock island as it’s the most developed and looks the best… not found a place to stay at a good price yet…

          • Sundar says:

            Genghis,
Andaman is a very good place. I would suggest booking an official tour operator and take a private cab – This is not so costly considering Indian rupee is about 80 per pound. Great many beaches to visit and relax. It maybe cheaper to fly cash from Chennai(MAA), once you reach there via a no of routes – BA, Etihad, Jet, Air India.
I’ve been there but as two 4 pax familes when I was younger.

        • Brad says:

This can also be done using 20k AA

  • Boi says:

    Wow! This is aspirational!

I just booked tickets for my brother to visit us…..he doesn’t have any FF program. Any advice which one I should open for him?
Flying with South African airways from Botswana to South Africa then Swiss/Lufthansa to UK

    • filipino_chino says:

      Have a look at http://www.wheretocredit.com/ – this will help…

    • John says:

Will he be using the miles for anything or will he just forget about it and let them expire?

I suggest looking for a program where you can combine the miles with your own and/or cash them out for something else like hotel points.

I use Aegean myself, which basically lets you open a new account for any random person and combine the miles into your own account – but do it for too many people and you will get 5 days notice at the most awkward to prove they are all real people otherwise you get banned

  • Ro says:

Over how long is the trip Brad?
    Amazing redemption(s)!!

  • Matthew says:

There’s no need to transfer SPG to United at 2:1 anymore. Much better rather is via SPG to Marriott to United.

    • Matthew says:

Sorry for dodgy grammar, it’s the end of a night shift and time for some zzzzz!

  • Richard says:

So, when I try and use my miles to go from uk to hk I’m pretty sure it costs like 100,000? but surely the leg from madrid to lima is just as far and for so much less.

What am I missing here? I’ve been saving my miles for awhile now and have around 80,000 but can never seem to find any good way of spending them.

    • Brad says:

Are you talking about Y or J ?

    • AndyR says:

LHR to HKG is on BA and MAD to LIM is on Iberia. Iberia have a different award chart and generally require less miles.

      • Brad says:

Correct ! and surcharges are around 90EUR from MAD, if booked on BA from LHR it would be over £200
