New Avios-earning Qatar Airways sale deals launched

Qatar Airways has kicked off another round of business class deals.

These are NOT as exciting as we saw back in January.  There is also a very tight travel window – you must fly before 21st June 2017.

You have a week to book – these deals end on 3rd May.

Full details of the – not very good – UK deals can be found here.

Qatar Travel Festival

The best fares will not be found from the UK, however, as you can see from the examples below.

Here are a few of the better headline prices.  These deals are all for business class travel via Doha.

These prices EXCLUDE the additional discount for using the promo code MASTERCARD when booking.  This discount does not appear to work for every flight – in many cases it only seems to work where Business Saver rather than Business Promo is selected.

These prices are NOT the full list of discounts – they are just random examples I picked out last night.  You can use the country links below to check out prices from other popular starting points.  Stockholm seems to have the best deals.

Stockholm to Dubai – £914

Stockholm to Cape Town – £1,478

Stockholm to Bali – £1,411

Stockholm to Singapore – £1,273

Helsinki to Krabi – £1,204

Helsinki to Bangkok – £1,213

Brussels to Johannesburg – £1,493

Copenhagen to Auckland – £2,345

Oslo to Colombo – £1,246

Oslo to Seychelles – £1,427

Sofia to Delhi – £1,320

Sofia to Beijing – £1,570

The longer routes would earn 560 British Airways Executive Club tier points return (140 + 140 + 140 + 140) due to the change of plane in Doha.  Auckland is 600 tier points.  560 points is more than 90% of what you need for a BA Silver card.  Delhi is 140 + 40 + 40 + 140.  Dubai is 140 + 60 + 60 + 140 as the connection books into First Class on a two class plane.  Remember, though, that you still need to have taken 4 British Airways flights for cash in your current tier point year before you will be upgraded.

How to pick a departure city

It isn’t all about the long-haul flight price.  You need to add in the cost of getting to your starting point.

More importantly, you need to build in contingency.  You need to arrive early enough to ensure that you won’t miss your connection if your inbound flight is late.  If that means staying overnight, you need to factor in the cost of a hotel.  You may also want to pick an airport with a hotel on the airport to avoid messing about with shuttle buses.

Remember that BA will no longer tag through bags to connecting flights when they are on separate tickets.  If you are checking in a case, you will need to fly London to, say, Stockholm, wait for your case, clear immigration, go to Departures, check in your case and clear security again.  This will take some time.

As ever with Qatar, you should keep an eye on the aircraft.  The most modern seats are on the Boeing 787, Airbus A350 and Airbus A380 fleet.  I think that the full A330 fleet has been refitted now too.  The newer planes have a 1-2-1 herringbone layout where passengers faces away from each other.

The Boeing 777 aircraft are fully flat but have a different 2 x 2 x 2 layout.  Qatar also uses short-haul planes on some European routes but these are configured with ‘proper’ business class seats.

Here are my Qatar Airways seat and lounge reviews – you will see that I am very positive about them:

If you’ve got any travel plans for the next two months, it is worth popping over to the Qatar Airways website and seeing if there is anything interesting.

  • Ro says:

There are fares from stockholm to auckland for under 1600
And fares to krabi for about 1k or less

  • Scott says:

I was seeing ARN-AKL for around £1600 last night.

  • Kevin says:

On my return leg last month with Qatar AKL-DOH-FRA and then BA FRA-LCY, Qatar in AKL refused to check my bags through to LCY and insisted I had to claim and re-check them in FRA I questioned this saying QR’s policy is to do this, but the check-in agents (who did double-check) were adamant and refused to do so.
It wasn’t a problem for me as I had a 4 hour connection time in FRA, but worth noting if connection times are tight.

    • Andrew says:

At DOH they did it without batting an eye, so maybe it varies with their own staff at DOH and ground agent staff they have worldwide.

  • mark2 says:

On the subject of check through, If we fly BHX-DUB-BOS for example on Aer Lingus does anyone know if they will check the bags through.
OR, do we need the bags to go through US Customs in Dublin?

    • Polly says:

Depends if you are on the one PNR al the way from BHX to BOS. If so, yes, bags all the way to BOS. If you are on avios only to dub, then it’s pick up bags and check in. How long do you have in Dub? Bags are checked in before you go to the us customs area.

      • mark2 says:

We are just looking at present.
I would want separate tickets to avoid APD.
But tax avoidance is not the only reason: it is only 100,000 Avios return + £210 from DUB-BOS in Sep/Oct and we live nr Birmingham so would not need to stay the night before.
We would travel up through New England into Canada to see the leaves.
The flight leaves DUB at 1620 so no great problem with bags.
So if same PNR do US Customs not even see bags?

        • Polly says:

Mark, once you arrive in dub, collect bags, then go to check in again., all bags go through same security check, my sister and family just did this, this week. Bags are spot checked like it was in the USA, behind the scenes, where they can break locks etc! Then after that you proceed to US immigration, which can have up to one hour long queues! Once though the big glass wall, that’s it,,you are on US soil! It’s quite intimidating actually. So to speak. Do leave a few hours between flights, incase you are delayed out of BHX. You can relax in the DAA lounge, it has a shower, or GC lounge before you head to usa check area. There is absolutely nothing beyond the glass wall! Boring.
Your trip,is one of the best in the USA too, magnificent scenery.

  • Geoff says:

Re ‘The longer routes would earn 560 British Airways Executive Club tier points return’ – the DOH-AKL leg gets 160 tier points, so that would be 600 points in a oner.

    • Polly says:

Yes, you get your 600 TPs, but then you need your 4 sectors on BA metal to obtain silver. Which is easily done….

  • Rob says:

Email of the day (from a reputable agency I already work with): “I’m just getting in touch to discuss working a bit more closely with Durex. We have identified your site as a perfect fit to push the brand and test some activity and noticed you’re not currently signed up to the program.”

  • Robbie says:

Barcelona also seems to be a good just picked up BCN to DXB for 920
