Got the Etihad credit card? Get a free upgrade to Heathrow Rewards premium tier

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

A few Head for Points readers will have applied for the Etihad Guest credit card in recent weeks.  This is due to the generous 15,000 miles sign-up bonus on offer until the end of May.

If you have signed up, there is an extra bonus you may not be aware of.

Etihad credit card holders get a free upgrade to the Heathrow Rewards premium tier.

Heathrow Rewards

Heathrow Rewards gives you 1 point for every £1 spent in Heathrow (1 per £10 on foreign exchange) or on Heathrow Express tickets (online bookings only). Once you’ve earned 250 points you can exchange them for miles or shopping vouchers.

The premium tier usually requires £500 per year of spending.  The one and only benefit is double Heathrow Rewards points on all of your spending, ie 2 points per £1.

Registration is easy.

Go to this page on the Etihad website and click through the link to the Heathrow Rewards site.  You must be logged out of Heathrow Rewards or it will not work.

It is not clear how long you will keep the status.  It works on calendar year, so I would imagine that – even if you cancel your Etihad credit card tomorrow – you would retain it for the rest of 2017 and all of 2018.

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards (April 2024)

Etihad Guest does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Etihad Guest miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Etihad Guest miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Etihad Guest mile. The Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it.

Hi – as far as I could tell there was not even a check that I held an Etihad credit card. I entered my surname and my HR login name and immediately got a confirmation e-mail!

    Cheers

  • test says:

    Indeed, Registered for double rewards!

  • Tracy Regan says:

    This is what I got.

Thank you for your interest in this promotion.
It seems that this promotion has expired.

I wonder if it’s because I might have already registered but can’t remember!

  • Nigel says:

I would love to know what is the best credit card to gather airmiles ? I have a BA Amex Card that our business spends around £100k per year on, I get a companion voucher, but I find the Airmiles and voucher are hopeless for long haul flights, + a lot of our suppliers will not take Amex. Would I better ripping this card up and going with Etihad ?

    • the real harry1 says:

Just switching to one of the Amex-issued Amex cards would give you many more possibilities to choose your airline as the Membership Reward points can be redeemed on many more airlines, hotels etc

      • Genghis says:

Or the SPG card for some long term spend?

        • Genghis says:

          £100k spend = 100k SPGs = 300k Marriott = Marriott travel package.
Have a think about what your travel goals are

          • the real harry1 says:

            yep they look unbeatable

however – if it were expensed & I needed a long-term points card – & I flew frequently – I’d go for the Amex Plat every time because of the Priority Pass (free lounge access) & hotel status benefits

premise being that Nigel probably can’t churn, don’t know how true this is

          • Genghis says:

Depends how much Nigel travels as to whether he would get value from holding the Plat (ie perm benefits are the insurance and the PP, others can be had with a straight in straight out churn) but tax deductible (could be c. Half price depending on corporate structure and profits).

But Nigel says a lot of suppliers don’t take Amex. Depending on personal income, has Nigel thought about the HSBC Premier World Elite MasterCard?

  • Lynsey says:

How do you know if you’ve got Premium tier? I spent about £650 in Heathrow in October with my rewards card, will it tell me somewhere that I’m at premium tier? Thanks

    • Hunter says:

I met the spend a little while back and have heard nothing, so have just emailed their customer services for confirmation.

    • Tim says:

Look at your statement on the heathrow rewards website. If you got two points per quidvspent you are premiumnteir

  • thehornets says:

O/T Amex Plat. I upgraded my Gold to Plat recently using the generic link and all went well, including the 20k bonus. Does anyone have any experience on how long it takes for SPG and other status upgrades to come through?

My wife’s (brand new) accounts were set up, with status, almost instantly. My existing ones are still waiting nearly 3 weeks later.

On the flip side … No card charge yet!

    • Rob says:

Has your wife’s account been charged with fees yet?

    • Rob says:

Can add mine has taken much longer for status to come through

      • thehornets says:

No fees, although I accidentally added an additional supp card which resulted in a £170 charge. I didn’t realise that a supplementary Gold card automatically upgrades into a Plat too. The charge was easily removed by customer services without a problem.

        • Genghis says:

It’s an easy mistake to make. I did it a few years ago. When I called up to cancel they said they’d give me a refund but only a pro rata refund came through. I then called up again and they trued it up to the £170.

          • mark2 says:

I lost 94p. A bit steep since I did not activate the card, but not worth arguing about.

    • Ro says:

Applied for my hotel statuses 4 weeks ago and still not heard anything :-/

      • MattyS says:

Have you linked your Amex card number to your hotel account ? Just had an on-line chat with Hilton customer services as mine hadn’t been upgraded after three weeks, and they said I needed to add the card number to my HH account profile. Having closed my amex last week, may be a little late for me !

        • thehornets says:

I haven’t spoken to Hilton but an email to SPG referred me straight back to Amex…

    • RTS says:

Do you have the generic link pls?

    • Mzungu says:

I was about to apply for Gold Rewards (recommendation from Mrs Mzungu) and I noticed the point that you don’t get the sign up bonus if you have any other MR cards. I have a Corporate Gold from my business, it’s in my name, but registered to the business address. Anyone know if this will put the kibosh on getting a sign-up bonus on a personal card application (at a different address, i.e. home)? FWIW I hardly use the Corporate card, but I do collect MR points on it.

      • the real harry1 says:

they won’t be able to spot two identical names & assume it’s the same person – not as if you give any unique ID such as passport number – they won’t know it’s you, in other words

        • Talay says:

          Really ?

You have exact matches of date of birth, age, home phone number, mobile number and all manner of stuff like electoral roll matches, linked accounts, all of which produce a near perfect match and if they couldn’t work out he was who he says he is because some data has been changed, then he’d fail the credit check.

          • the real harry1 says:

Corporate Gold won’t have checked any of that for individuals

          • Mzungu says:

I’ve just looked at my original application form for Corporate Gold (yes I still have a copy!), and it includes my home address, phone number, date of birth…

I might bite the bullet and give them a call and ask. Worst that can happen is I’ll cancel the corporate card and wait 6 months – their loss!

  • Anna says:

Re: Heathrow Rewards. I spent £154 at the airport on Monday to trigger the 3000 bonus points. Sales lady scanned my card, but at the point of payment some sort of automatic discount was applied, taking the total down to £144. Got my points email from HR and only showing 460 points 🙁
I’ve emailed them as the pre-discount spend was over £150 but I’m not hopeful.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Did you get one of those money off vouchers for £75 spend with the card?

Sure the £10 off wasn’t a store promo?

  • Carey says:

I signed up for the Etihad Amex/Visa credit card in Dec 2016 and got the bonus miles (however that was a long winded saga – another story). I already have a Heathrow Rewards card so i am assuming I would not qualify for this new offer of bonus points with Heathrow Rewards? Only for new registrants?
