How to book Best Western hotels with Tesco Clubcard vouchers

The majority of HfP readers who use Tesco Clubcard vouchers for travel are likely to use them for Avios points or Virgin Flying Club miles.

However, if you’re planning a UK holiday and would like to save money, you could also use your Clubcard vouchers towards a hotel booking.

How do I exchange my Clubcard points?

The Tesco page to convert your Tesco Clubcard vouchers into Best Western tokens is here.

For every £5 in Clubcard vouchers you get £15 Best Western tokens. This means you will get a face value of 3x, although this is not strictly true as I explain below.

The tokens will be emailed to you within 30 minutes.

How do I use my tokens?

140 Best Western hotels in the UK (see here) participate in the Tesco Clubcard promotion.

Unfortunately you cannot book or check Best Western availability online.  This is the biggest downside of the Best Western deal versus the Hilton deal, because (as our Hilton article explains) you don’t actually need to ring up to book Hilton rooms despite what the Tesco site tells you.  Even if you wanted to ring up to book just to be sure everything was OK, the ability to check Hilton availability for Tesco vouchers online before you call saves a huge amount of time.

Once you’ve received your Best Western tokens by email you have to wait about one hour until calling the booking hotline. You can part-pay with Best Western tokens and cash if you don’t have enough Clubcard vouchers.

What do I get for my tokens?

There are around 250 Best Western hotels in the UK and around 2/3rd are taking part in this Tesco Clubcard offer.  The list of participating hotels is on this Best Western website.

Most hotels let you book just one night, however some hotels require a minimum of two nights.

The price you pay is based on the flexible Bed & Breakfast rate, although it is not clear whether you can cancel a Clubcard tokens booking as you could with a flexible rate cash booking.  If you would otherwise have booked a cheaper non-refundable rate for cash, you won’t be genuinely getting 3x face value for your vouchers although you should do better than 2x.

It’s worth calling the hotline before ordering the Best Western tokens to find out about availability and minimum nights required.  Whilst they could be a good value deal, you don’t want to find yourself in a position where you have already converted your vouchers but the call centre claims that no Tesco rooms are available despite cash rooms being available for sale.

Certain dates might be excluded and each hotel has got only a limited amount of rooms allocated to the Tesco offer.  If you look at the comments about this deal on the Clubcard / Best Western site page you will see that this is a common issue.

PS.  Don’t forget that you can also use Clubcard vouchers for Novotel and Mercure hotels in the UK.  They can also be used with Barcelo Hotels, Warner Hotels, Butlins Hotels, Classic Lodges, Hastings Hotels, New Forest Hotels, Old English Inns and Select Hotels of Ireland.
