Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Is the Marriott Moments auction site getting more useful?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Last year, Marriott Rewards quietly launched Marriott Moments.  This is their version of SPG Moments and Hilton Auctions, allowing you to use your points for ‘once in a lifetime’ experiences.

Whilst I was keen on this initiative, the reality did not initially live up to the promise:

the site was almost entirely US dominated

items were going for exceptionally high points bids, probably because Marriott Rewards is such a massive programme and arguably because (with Starwood not integrated) Marriott had very few high-end hotels where travellers wanted to redeem their points for stays

I was encouraged by a reader to take another look.

The good news is that, whilst there is still virtually nothing happening in the UK, there are signs of life elsewhere in Europe.  Some of the experiences are cheap as well.

The best deals are on the Culinary page.  For example:

The Art of Cooking like a Chef Class at Le Cordon Bleu Paris

  • 6.5-hour The Art of Cooking Like a Chef Class at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris (classes subject to availability)
  • Gifts to commemorate your experience including apron, tea towel, and cooler bag
  • Exclusive gift of a Le Cordon Bleu tea box
  • Experience is for two people

You get all of this for 25,000 Marriott points (8,333 Starwood Preferred Guest points) for two people.  Choose from 15th September or 20th October.

or

Delight in a 6-Course Culinary Voyage at 3 Michelin Star Restaurant Aqua at The Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg

  • Exceptional six-course dinner with Chef de Cuisine Sven Elverfeld at 3-star Michelin restaurant, Aqua within The Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg
  • Exclusive welcome champagne aperitif with Chef Elverfeld in Aqua’s acclaimed kitchen
  • Signed, personalized copy of Sven Elverfeld’s cookbook
  • Experience is for two people

This is 95,000 Marriott Rewards points (31,666 Starwood points) for two and you can pick a date to suit yourself, subject to availability.

or, in Berlin:

Discover with a Tea Master during a Robust Interactive Tea Class at The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin

  • Two and a half hour tea class by a trained Tea Masters at the prestigious Tea Lounge at The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin (July 29, 2017 4:00-6:30pm)
  • Complimentary gourmet delicacies from the in-house patisseries of The Ritz-Carlton
  • Special Gift to commemorate your experience
  • Experience is for two people

This is just 10,000 Marriott Rewards points for a couple or, converting from Starwood, just 3,333 SPG points.   The Ritz-Carlton Berlin is a very pleasant place indeed – I’ve stayed – and this could be fun.

There are a couple of other European culinary deals available too.

Now, to be honest, the other categories of rewards – Lifestyle, Sports and Entertainment – have virtually nothing to offer if you’re not planning to be in the US.  It is clear that Marriott Moments is worth a bit more of our attention, however.

PS.  It seems that I also missed out on a good auction.  They had a day at Wimbledon on Centre Court last Thursday with Stan Smith which went for 255,000 Marriott Rewards points.  That is a £3,000 – £4,000 package.

Marriott related so not completely OT 🙂 Did anyone get the 1000 Avios posted after signing up to Marriott Rewards last month? [ https://headforpoints.com/2017/06/05/1000-free-avios-for-joining-marriott-rewards-no-stay-needed ]

    • MarkM says:

No, still not posted for me. I definitely signed up while the offer was still valid too.

    • vlcnc says:

I actually posted something similar in the Tesco post, but probably more appropriate here… emailed Marriot to see what they say… feels like this promise has been disappeared into the ether…

  • Kevin H says:

Me neither – I signed-up myself and 2 others. None of us has received the Avios or heard-back.
Last I read on here was someone who thought we should expect the Avios to be posted end-June, but clearly that never happened. I guess Marriott is just ignoring it.

  • Anna says:

There was a reader who said she had got the avios after activating the account rather than just registering, however I activated mine on Monday and still nothing! Is it time to start chasing them up?

  • Sandra says:

My daughter and I both registered, and activated our accounts straight after that and we have nothing either. Mmmm.

  • Lucky says:

I have registered 3 members of my family too and have not seen any points credited yet.

Rob do you have any insight on this? It’s really annoying to promise something and not stick to that 🙂

    • Rob says:

      No

    • Genghis says:

I’ve already written this off as I signed Mrs G up. Given we didn’t pay anything, we’ve not lost out. Yes there are principles and all that but cba with the effort.

  • Kevin H says:

I don’t think “activating” the account helps, unfortunately. I activated (at the time) 1 of the 3 people who I signed-up – and left the other 2 as “registered” – but same result: nothing!

    • Harpo says:

Nothing for the 4 in our house, all signed up early and accounts activated.

  • fivebobbill says:

Sorry to hijack this thread, but a Marriott related query.
Back on 5th June Rob posted a promo here where Marriott were offering 1,000 avios on sign up, the offer has since been withdrawn, but I managed to get me and the missus signed up before they shut it down.
Anyway, I remember the T&C’s saying the 1,000 avios would be posted to your account at the beginning of the following month of joining, ie, join in June, avios awarded start of July.
However as of yet no avios.
Anyone else in same boat, or able to shed any light on this please?
    Many thanks

    • fivebobbill says:

Doh! Should’a read all of the above first… sorry 🙁

  • Sandra says:

Would be interested to know if anyone gets a reply from Marriott about this. I have confirmation after registering/activating, as does my daughter, that we are being awarded the points although none appeared.
