News in brief:

How you can stop the next British Airways IT meltdown

After losing an estimated £80m due to the total IT failure a couple of months ago, British Airways has a plan.  Maybe you know someone who can help.

Business Resilience Executive

Are you interested in working on crisis management, emergency response and business continuity across British Airways? If so, the role of Business Resilience Executive could be for you.

This new position offers a fantastic opportunity to join the Business Resilience team in a challenging role that will require you to work with colleagues across the whole of British Airways.

You will be responsible for the administration and development of the team’s resilience plans, processes, learning portfolio, communications, facilities and technology. As such, you will be a core member of the team that helps ensure the airline is in a constant state of readiness to deal with any disruptive event – through both planning ahead and responding appropriately.

This role will allow you to develop a great understanding of the wider airline and partner operation and build personal and organisational resilience in the face of the most challenging situations.

Key skills presumably involve a) stopping weekend contractors pressing the big red ‘off’ button at the data centre and b) making sure Alex Cruz’ hi-viz vest is ready for use at all times.  Apply on ba.com here.  Thanks to Marc.

That odd email from Amex …..

If you have a British Airways American Express card, you probably got an email from Amex yesterday asking you to sign up for a new cashback deal.

All you had to do was spend £20 across WH Smith, Ocado, Shell and the Post Office, in as many transactions as you like, and you received 500 bonus Avios.

There was a button to ‘save to your card’, but it didn’t work.  Amex told one reader yesterday that it hadn’t been added to the system yet.  It told another that all 20,000 registrations had already gone, which I doubt is true as I clicked through within 30 seconds of receiving the email.

It did start working at about 9pm last night and I was able to register myself and my wife successfully.  If you tried and failed during the day yesterday, try again now before the 20,000 registrations cap is reached.

PS.  Talking of Amex IT cock-ups, American Express has just told holders of the British Airways Corporate American Express Card that it has fixed an IT error in setting up new Avios accounts.  This error has been in place since 2015.  Amex has only just got around to dealing with it, even though it impacted everyone who did not have an Avios account in place at the point of their BA Corporate Amex application.

There is also an IT issue regarding the Starwood American Express card which Amex still refuses to admit exists and which cost me 10,000 SPG points.  This has been going on for at least 3 years …..

  • The Original Nick says:

Just been to Shell and pumped in £20.01. Scanned my Shell loyalty card and paid with my Amex Plat . Received an email from Amex before I’d even started the car back up confirming, Thank you for using your Card at everyday Spending. Credit should appear within 5 business days.

  • Tony says:

    Saved the offer on:
    Amex Platinum
    Amex Gold
    Amex British Airways
this morning after reading this, lets hope fuel at Shell counts, though it is an everyday spend.

  • Strong Travel says:

Received the same 500 MR offer for the Amex Gold card. Amex told me ‘technical issue’ and would appear in the Offers by morning. Appeared by 1am and successfully saved to card.

  • Alan says:

Hmm I didn’t get an email about the offer but noticed yesterday my Plat was offering 500MR on the same deal…

  • Brian says:

OT – booked the MGallery Leicester Square in their recent promotion for £96. Got an email this morning to say that the opening has been delayed, so they have moved me to the Sofitel St James. I think that’s a decent deal for £96! :))

    • Andrew M says:

      Superb!

    • Rob says:

      That is an excellent result!

    • Doodles says:

I work for a travel company so was offered a cheaper opening rate than £96. I was supposed to stay yesterday but was offered a room at Bermondsey Square hotel instead (also a Bespoke hotel) at a higher rate than I had booked for the MGallery! I didn’t take them up on that, but was told the offer will be extended for six months (that’s if there is ever sufficient availability).

    • Toppcat says:

Me too. Excellent result! I will miss my Accor Plat status when it expires in Dec…

  • R says:

No offer on any of 5 cards inc 4 BA cards. Not sure I can be bothered to go through the chat hassle for this after wasting an hour getting the Amazon deal added (:

  • Allan says:

I received a mystery 500 avios on 19th for “Special – Amex store bonus”
Is this the same thing as I can’t remember signing up to anything but would have spent money at amazon recently.

    • Allan says:

Have had to truncate the full description as looks like there’s some spam software which didn’t like two of the words in the description on my ba statement.

    • Tracy says:

Yes I had the same, posted to BAEC 19th August. I didn’t sign up for anything either….

  • R says:

Well, I succumbed (my resolve did not last long ..) and chatted. Agent could not add as she said that the offer is being reviewed by the marketing team and she “did not want to provide any misleading information”. Not sure what that is all about. Maybe a mistake in releasing it ?

In any event if anyone has had it added manually after this post, please do let us know.

    • Johnny_c-l says:

I’m trying it on the chat now but am being interrogated about if I received an email about the offer.

    • Natalia S says:

I got the offer on my Amex Gold charge card, and chatted twice to get it for Amex Gold credit card and/or BA card (both unsuccessfully). I was told that 1) the offer will only work once per account (so even if added to another MR generating card, e.g. credit card, it won’t generate bonus twice); 2) the offer can only be added to primary card 3) the offer can only be added to the card for which you received an email. 4) and strange phrase “don’t want to provide misleading information” was used as well, I didn’t even understand what the lady meant – new Amex scripts, I guess…
