Bits: 50% off Hilton Honors points, new Amex cashback offers, triple PartnerPlusBenefit points

News in brief:

50% off when you buy Hilton Honors points

Hilton Honors is currently offering a 50% discount when you buy 5,000+ points – see this page and click through.  A 50% discount is equivalent to getting a 100% bonus.

This offer does not seem to be targeted but I can’t be certain.  If you don’t see it when you click through, it is targeted!

This may or may not be a bargain as it depends how you redeem them.  At the top end, you can buy 80,000 Hilton points for $400 (£303).  That is 0.5 cents each.

Regular readers of Head for Points will know that I tend to value Hilton points at 0.33p each, which is a little less than you are paying here.

Five star Hilton, Conrad and Waldorf-Astoria hotels typically run to 80,000 points per night.  The Conrad New York, which I reviewed here, has a cap of 80,000 points per night.  In this sale, if you got the full 50% discount, you would be paying $400 for 80,000 points.  Given that the Conrad New York sells for over $600 on many dates, it can represent a saving.  Similarly, buying points would often be a good deal at Conrad Tokyo which I reviewed here.

Hilton Honors is also a decent deal at cheaper point levels.   The Hampton by Hilton in Sheffield, for example is capped at 10,000 points per night.  At 0.5c per point you would be paying roughly £38 per night if you bought the points.  That is a 60% discount on the typical nightly rate of £100.  Hampton properties include free breakfast as well.

On the other hand, the Hilton Sheffield costs up to 30,000 points per night.  Even with 50% off your points, you would be paying around £114.  Whilst a bit less than the typical £125 cash cost, it is not a great deal – especially as you would earn points and miles back on the cash rate.  One upside of a reward night, of course, is that it is cancellable without penalty.

At the most extreme, you could buy the Hilton Salalah resort in Oman, reviewed here, for £19 a night assuming a 50% discount.  That would be the rough cost of buying 5,000 points in this promotion.

What I can say is that, at a 50% discount, you shouldn’t lose money buying Hilton Honors points at 0.5 cents.

If you just buying a handful of points to top off your account, the price per point doesn’t matter anyway.  If you a few thousand short of a redemption then this is a decent opportunity to top them up.

The link to buy is here.

The offer closes on 5th October.

PartnerPlusBenefit

Triple PartnerPlusBenefit points to Germany

PartnerPlusBenefit is the small business scheme for the UK and Ireland run by 11 of the Star Alliance airlines.  This includes Lufthansa and Swiss.

I wrote about PPB in detail in this article.  It is a LOT more flexible than the British Airways On Business scheme which I reviewed here – although you’d be daft not to join On Business too if you have a VAT registered UK business.  Click here to sign up – you’ll receive 1,500 BenefitPoints just for joining.

Until 6th October, you will receive triple BenefitPoints when you fly from the UK or Ireland to Frankfurt (212 flights per week) or Munich (131 flights per week) on Lufthansa.  I’m not sure if this includes the Lufthansa codeshare on the bmi Regional services from Bristol.

You need to register for this offer in your PPB account online on the ‘Special Promotions’ page.

Hilton Honors related – I am currently on a status match to gold and staying in a Hilton resort but not booked directly – is there any way to trigger this as a stay that would count towards the four stays I need to keep Gold until 2019? Room spend or something billed to room?
Otherwise a mattress run might be in order!

  • Cate says:

The Hilton deal is attractive as we’ve nearly got enough points for 2x 5 nights for the price of 4 for next April. Not sure if I’d make the shortfall for free between now and then. Pondering.

  • Cate says:

‘Hampton properties include free breakfast as well’

…..ancedotal evidence (first hand) suggests that if the free breakfast isn’t available 10,000 service recovery points will come your way. May be an idea to hit the kitchen mins before they close if you prefer trying for an ex gratia point grab rather than brekkie (which is very nice!).

  • Ian says:

I have redeemed a couple of times (in different cards) the 500 Avios for £25 at Amazon. All show as redeemed, but I haven’t got the points yet. More than a week now. Is anyone having the same issue? What’s the typical time frame for this to post?

    • mark2 says:

they do suddenly appear, but take longer than most Amex points. Mine took from 29/8 to 4/9.

    • Rob says:

What do you mean by ‘they haven’t posted’? Are they showing on your Amex online account? If so, they will be sent to BA at the end of the month with your normal Avios.

  • JamesB says:

OT: When missing miles or points we inevitably claim them but what do folks do when the error works in their favour? I’ve benefited very substantially from an error, should I flag it up or play dumb? I’m inclined towards the former but do folks think that’s just daft?

    • Rob says:

You keep them, because at some point the same programme will leg you over on something and you end up square 🙂

      • JamesB says:

Now that you mention it they already did – twice! Now my conscience is clear, thanks. 🙂

    • John says:

Just be prepared for them to be taken back with no notice – but if nothing has happened after 2-3 years then you’re probably good

  • RobL says:

Hi guys, Newbie question. If I apply for the Hilton status match to Diamond, the requirement to keep until March 19 is 8 stays in 90 days. Does a stay count if points are used? Are looking to purchase the 50% off points and use points stays to qualify. Many thanks

    • Rob says:

Yes, reward stays count – some of my 8 stays were reward stays.

    • Peter K says:

You need to ask yourself the question:
“If I’m not making 8 stays in 3 months to qualify for Platinum, am I really going to get £300 of benefit back from having it over the next 15 months or so?”

  • chris says:

    OT.

Any recommendation for a Hilton property in NYC for a 40th birthday trip.

Saying for 4 nights, have around 180K point at disposal, probably looking at doing 3 nights on points (~60K per night therefore) and one paid. (i know i can get 5 nights for 4 on points but were only doing 4 nights)

    I have gold status too.

Probably slightly away from Times square if possible. I did see the UN Hilton seems to be good value?

    Thanks

    • TripRep says:

Rob recommends Conrad, I had good stays at MidTown & Mlllenium overlooking WTC

    • h1tvd says:

Just back from 5 nights in NYC, over 2 hilton stays to complete my Diamond challenge, I stayed at The Renwick for 2 nights, I didn’t like it at all, found it to be noisy, smelly, rubbish free breakfast, no perks for Diamond. I stayed 3 nights at HGI Times Square Central. I kept booking and cancelling nights when the points level dropped or paid price dropped. I paid $110 for one night, 43k points and 47k points for other 2 nights. I liked the location of the HGI, it was very near Times Square but not right on it. Free brekkie was fairly good too, room modern, bed comfy. Its not a Conrad or Waldorf but I spend no time in my room in NYC so want a cheaper option.

    • Tilly says:

I’ve stayed at both the Times Sq one and one by Central Park and Bloomingdales. Both very good.

  • Joan says:

I love the £25 Connaught offer . They ran that last year at Christmas time . This time we’re off to use it for (almost ) a third off a bottle of Veuve Cliquot at the bar .
Slightly OT but I’ve just upgraded to the BA premier plus Amex and am loving how quickly my avios are building up .
Ps there’s a great 8 Avios per pound spend at M&S currently via BA shopping website so I’m using a Sparks card 20% offer to get two cashmere jumpers for my partner which will give me nearly 1500 avios in total
