Bits: 50% off Hilton Honors points, new Amex cashback offers, triple PartnerPlusBenefit points

News in brief:

50% off when you buy Hilton Honors points

Hilton Honors is currently offering a 50% discount when you buy 5,000+ points – see this page and click through.  A 50% discount is equivalent to getting a 100% bonus.

This offer does not seem to be targeted but I can’t be certain.  If you don’t see it when you click through, it is targeted!

This may or may not be a bargain as it depends how you redeem them.  At the top end, you can buy 80,000 Hilton points for $400 (£303).  That is 0.5 cents each.

Regular readers of Head for Points will know that I tend to value Hilton points at 0.33p each, which is a little less than you are paying here.

Five star Hilton, Conrad and Waldorf-Astoria hotels typically run to 80,000 points per night.  The Conrad New York, which I reviewed here, has a cap of 80,000 points per night.  In this sale, if you got the full 50% discount, you would be paying $400 for 80,000 points.  Given that the Conrad New York sells for over $600 on many dates, it can represent a saving.  Similarly, buying points would often be a good deal at Conrad Tokyo which I reviewed here.

Hilton Honors is also a decent deal at cheaper point levels.   The Hampton by Hilton in Sheffield, for example is capped at 10,000 points per night.  At 0.5c per point you would be paying roughly £38 per night if you bought the points.  That is a 60% discount on the typical nightly rate of £100.  Hampton properties include free breakfast as well.

On the other hand, the Hilton Sheffield costs up to 30,000 points per night.  Even with 50% off your points, you would be paying around £114.  Whilst a bit less than the typical £125 cash cost, it is not a great deal – especially as you would earn points and miles back on the cash rate.  One upside of a reward night, of course, is that it is cancellable without penalty.

At the most extreme, you could buy the Hilton Salalah resort in Oman, reviewed here, for £19 a night assuming a 50% discount.  That would be the rough cost of buying 5,000 points in this promotion.

What I can say is that, at a 50% discount, you shouldn’t lose money buying Hilton Honors points at 0.5 cents.

If you just buying a handful of points to top off your account, the price per point doesn’t matter anyway.  If you a few thousand short of a redemption then this is a decent opportunity to top them up.

The link to buy is here.

The offer closes on 5th October.

PartnerPlusBenefit

Triple PartnerPlusBenefit points to Germany

PartnerPlusBenefit is the small business scheme for the UK and Ireland run by 11 of the Star Alliance airlines.  This includes Lufthansa and Swiss.

I wrote about PPB in detail in this article.  It is a LOT more flexible than the British Airways On Business scheme which I reviewed here – although you’d be daft not to join On Business too if you have a VAT registered UK business.  Click here to sign up – you’ll receive 1,500 BenefitPoints just for joining.

Until 6th October, you will receive triple BenefitPoints when you fly from the UK or Ireland to Frankfurt (212 flights per week) or Munich (131 flights per week) on Lufthansa.  I’m not sure if this includes the Lufthansa codeshare on the bmi Regional services from Bristol.

You need to register for this offer in your PPB account online on the ‘Special Promotions’ page.

The Amex offers are not universal.
On my page I’ve not got the tfl or Avis offers. Interestingly, I already use my Amex to pay for tfl trips, and have rented quite a bit with Avis. So it looks like it is aimed at people who don’t already use those merchants.

    • Andrew says:

I’m certain the TfL offer is targeted to cards not registered for Oyster Contactless.

Of my 3 Amex cards, I had 2 registered and one not. The one that wasn’t registered got the TfL offer!

So I might strategically unregister one of the other cards to see if I get the offer next time round!

  • Cate says:

Mr Cate has just had an email from AMEX inviting him to the BFI festival. Can we use points to walk the red carpet? Cool!!

  • Gavin says:

Maybe I get no decent offers as I rarely use them. I used the Oliver Bonas offer for Mrs Gavin’s birthday present. Then returned the clothes as she didn’t like them!

  • Andy S says:

I don’t have the tfl offer and it’s the only one of this list that would be any use to me 🙁

  • Jacob says:

Does anyone know where I could find a up-to-date list or map of Hilton properties for 5k and 10k points? I know awardmapper but it’s rather outdated.

  • h1tvd says:

O/T I have upgraded our return flight SFO-LHR with avios to CW next July. 2 adults and 2 teens travelling. I grudge paying to reserve seats especially when its about £100 each seat. Anyone have an idea what availability of seats will look like at OLCI 24 hrs before flight? Not particular about seats, just want them together or at least 2 x 2.

    • Clive says:

We waited until 24 hours (when we had no status and didn’t want to pay) and found that it was no problem getting pairs of middle seats together. All of the window pairs were gone though. This was A380 to SIN.

I think advance seat selection secures a better seat (window etc) rather than sitting together – together should be possible anyway.

      • Clive says:

That said, even sitting apart isn’t a huge deal on an overnight flight – just realised you said return from SFO. You’ll be asleep most of the way anyway 🙂

    • Liz says:

I don’t pay the seat booking fees but if you go through the process of buying your seat selection just before online check in starts you will see what seats are still available. I make a note of them then as soon as check in opens try to select the ones you saw.

      • Nick_C says:

In my experience, our seats were pre allocated, although we didn’t know it until we checked in on line. What we saw on line when check in opened was much more choice than was available for srlection 24 hours earlier, as blocked seats opened up.

We flew to LAX on 7 June and back on 3 July, and plenty of spare seats in both directions.

Fees to reserve seats in CW are ridiculous.

      • h1tvd says:

Yes, can’t justify the cost to book the seats in advance for 4 people. Tempted to do a quick tier point run for bronze (already got some tier points so a club europe return from edi/gla to malta/tenerife etc would probably suffice), probably cost less than the £400 seat reservation fees and I would have bronze for 20 months and earn some avios to boot. With that I could at least book seats 7 days in advance of flight…….and the trip to SFO, paid premium economy, would get me close to ba silver. Decisions decisions!

        • JamesB says:

Somebody needs to confirm that for you, I would have thought your status only allows you to only choose your own seat 7 days in advance but I’ve never had BA status so I don’t know. I believe NickC may have a point because my partner books T-355 and almost always gets a window seat in first two rows despite not paying and having no status.

          • Alan says:

It should be the same as Silver & Gold – you can reserve seats for everyone on the same booking.

        • Simon says:

Save your money. Have done about 10 long haul CW flights with wife and 2 kids. Never paid to reserve, never failed to get 4 together, or at least 2 pairs at OLCI… Let’s face it, worst case scenario, you get on board and someone will swap seats with you. Would take a very odd person to insist on staying seated next to someone else’s chid !

          • h1tvd says:

Thanks for the advice guys…..OH agrees with Clive as we will probably sleep most of the return flight anyway just wait until OLCI and hope for the best, fingers crossed…first CW flight EVER so nothing to compare unfavourably against so will probably think its the bees knees anyway lol.

        • Alex W says:

I would say silver is worth having for the lounge access, but I wouldn’t bother doing a TP run just to get bronze. As someone said I don’t think it’s likely that your party would be allocated totally separate seats anyway.

        • Alan says:

Definitely wouldn’t bother paying fees – of course the teenage children may prefer not to sit with parents so you might only be looking for 2 seats together 😉

  • Stuart says:

OT – Does anyone have the current Amex gold to platinum upgrade link to hand please?

  • Liz says:

Was hoping for the World of duty offer as we will be passing though tomorrow morning but no such luck – the rest of the offers are no use to me.

    • Andy S says:

I got that one but even if I was passing through an airport I would have no intention of spending 70 quid, the prices aren’t any better than offers in supermarkets. I guess their algorithm is good, they are not offering you or me offers on what we would do anyway!

      • Liz says:

I am planning on spending £150 for the 3000 Avios offer so it would have helped a bit! Hubby wants some airport only whisky.
