Get 1,000 Avios with a new wine deal from Laithwaites

Wine retailer Laithwaites, the UK’s largest mail-order wine retailer (it runs The Sunday Times Wine Club as well as pretty much every other branded mail-order operation), has been a BAEC partner for many years via The British Airways Wine Club and now Wine Explorer. It has also offered deals to avios.com members since the Air Miles relaunch in 2011.

A new avios.com deal for the Autumn, with a generous first order bonus, has just been launched.

laithwaite's wine avios

They are now offering this new deal (click for details):

A 12-bottle case for as little as £54.99

FREE delivery

1,000 Avios (250 Avios for existing customers)

2 free bottles of Rioja and a pair of Dartington Crystal glasses

You are getting tied into something. Every 8 or 12 weeks and for Christmas, Laithwaites will contact you with details of a new case. If you do not specifically say that you do not want to receive it, either online or by phone, it will be sent to you and charged to the credit card you used for your initial order. The small print can be found here.

So, in return for the cash saving on your first case, you are going to have to deal with some admin from Laithwaites going forward. Once you have got your 1,000 Avios banked you can quit the Wine Plan, but this may take a month or so.

Whether you want to go for this depends on how well organised you are. Overall, to be honest, it is a pretty good deal – 12 bottles of wine (+2 free bottles) at a bargain price, 1000 Avios and two wine glasses thrown in. I doubt the wine will be too bad, given that they want to encourage you to buy more.

Remember that this is an avios.com offer, not a British Airways promotion, and that you will need to give an avios.com account number.  You can move the points over to British Airways Executive Club later via ‘Combine My Avios‘.

Comments

  1. I don’t advise buying Laithwaites wine mixed cases – we placed an order under a similarly attractive offer a few years ago, and all of the wines seemed to have a certain bouquet of burnt tyres.

We persevered with about half of the bottles, but chucked the rest when we couldn’t bear to drink the duplicate bottles!

I think you were unlucky – we’ve had a very good experience with Laithwaites, excellent price/ quality result

you can be a new customer more than once – this is triggered by email address, not house address

    • Over the decades I have joined many Laithwaites administered wine clubs and have always found the wine very drinkable. I can particularly recommend Black Stump Shiraz. They also have a few high street shops e.g. Solihull.

    • Tell them you didn’t like the bottle and they will send you a generous voucher to buy another.

  2. I bought case of whites under similar offer a few months ago (incl. 3 free bottles of Sauv. blanc + 1000 avios) – for the price you pay (3£ per bottle considering general valuation of avios), it is great deal….and white wine is miles better than Naked wine delivered earlier this year…btw Laithwaites gave me 2000 avios, because they forgot.

  3. You need to be careful with Laithwates. 6 weeks after receiving my first case, out of the blue, they emailed to say that as per my request they cancelled my wine plan. But I never asked them to do this. I was going to contact them to cancel anyway so it was ok. 6 weeks later, they send me another case. I called them up and they arranged collection but during this conversation, Laithwates asked me twice if I wanted to order more wine!
seems impossible to cancel your account online even when you do find your account number which is mysteriously absent from all the paperwork . You will find account number on the address label on the box.

    • Sent a message through my account asking to cancel, and got a reply saying it would be done immediately. No issues for me, and certainly no attempt to keep me tied in.

  4. This is the same offer that Rob wrote about on 3rd September. I ordered the wine and was very happy but received no Avios, and still to date have not received them. Anyone else had the same issue? I was careful to use the correct link at the time and provided my Avios membership number as requested.

    • the real harry1 says:

their system for awarding Avios is a bit flaky but a phone call sorts it out

    • I was awarded the existing customer 250 Avios, rather than the new customer 1,000 Avios, within a few days of my order, so sent a message through my account. Got a reply within a day or so, and the missing 750 points were added about a week later.

  5. Rebecca says:

Ooh ordered this. 14 bottles of wine for £55 is good enough, 1000 avios and a couple of glasses is a bonus!
