Thanks to Quercus Books we have five copies of ‘How To Land A Plane’ by Mark Vanhoenacker to give away by midnight tonight.

Vanhoenacker is a British Airways Boeing 747 pilot and an established magazine and newspaper contributor. ‘How To Land A Plane’ is his second book after the highly successful ‘Skyfaring’, which Rob reviewed here.

About ‘How To Land A Plane’

I reviewed ‘How To Land A Plane’ a few weeks ago – you can find my review here.

Rather than repeating my own opinion, here is an extract from Mark’s introduction:

‘Like many pilots, cabin crew, and devoted fans of the window seat, I tend to think of my love of flight as simultaneously planet-sized and profoundly personal. We move like mere dots through the new immensity of the sky, we see our home so small and far below us on the unfamiliar enormity of the earth, and yet even as flying makes us feel so tiny, it uplifts us. What else does that? I’m never surprised when I hear people describe flying as an almost religious experience, nor when I encounter soaring language, wings, and elevated perspectives in sacred images and stories that far predate the Wright Brothers.’

Don’t be fooled by the prose above though – the book is actually a genuine no-nonsense ‘how to’ guide on landing a plane, showing you exactly what the pilot has to do.

Competition

As always we are using Gleam to draw the winners.

All you need to do is fill out the widget below by midnight today, Monday.  We will contact you for your postal address if you are one of the winners.

You must be a UK resident to enter.

If you are not lucky enough to win one of the five copies, Amazon is currently selling the book (which is hardback) for £3.99 which is even less than the Kindle version. The RRP is £9.99 for the hard copy version so you are getting a 60% discount.

It would make a decent stocking filler for any aviation enthusiast or business traveller in your family – or for yourself.  Good luck.

Hi, in addition to being a U.K. resident you actually need to be in the U.K. to enter. As I am on holiday in S Africa my attempt to enter was unfortunately blocked.

  • TripRep says:

Nice stocking filler, good compo thanks. And yes to all the newbies as per evey other competition on HfP, if you’re out of the UK, use a VPN or get a friend in UK to enter for you, simple.

I went to CPT recently and he was in the fight deck…had a bit of a chat with him, nice guy. Would like to read the book now!

OT: Just had an email from MyFlights. Their Amadeus agreement ends on 31 Dec 2017 with no extension. So sad to see it go. Was a great app 🙁

  • Phil says:

OT- I cancelled AMEX PR Gold in August and plan to apply again after full 6m passes. I then plan to cancel after roughly 1y then move into the free MR card since I can’t justify the annual fee.

Q1 does this seem a sensible strategy to maximise Reward points?
Q2 how does applying for, then cancelling, a charge card affect my credit score, assuming I never miss a payment?

    • Phil says:

to be clear, I know I’d have to apply for the credit card rather than simply ‘transfer’.

    • Genghis says:

      1. Have you thought about holding the Platinum for a short time / upgrading Gold to Platinum?
      2. It has an effect but not greatly IME. I’ve applied for 3 cards since the summer, cancelled 2 but been at 999 on Experian for the last few months and only dropped a few points at the start.

      • Genghis says:

        1. Also consider referring partner if possible

      • Phil says:

Would this not mean paying the rather large annual fee on the Platinum? I don’t do a huge amount of business travel so I can’t get the numbers to add up for paying the annual fee for the gold never mind plat!

        • Genghis says:

One month of plat is £37.50.

        • Phil says:

I don’t think I’d get even that amount of benefit! Assuming I needed to pay for lounge access for a couple of trips per year, it just wouldn’t stack up. Maybe if I start travelling more!

        • Genghis says:

Fair enough. If you spend £2k a month, the £37.50 in Plat fees gets you an extra 13k MR points over PRG. Everyone’s circumstances are different though.

        • the real harry1 says:

@ Phil – where did you use your 2 free Lounge Club passes before you cancelled the first Amex Gold? just curious what value you got
