Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

I’m looking to book a Melia hotel in May, it’s 76k Melia rewards per night. I have gold status via amex plat, can I use membership rewards or Avios to book the room, if so what is the conversion rate to Melia rewards??

Melia is not an MR or avios transfer partner.

See if Melia is running a ‘buy points’ bonus – these can be good value vs cash.

Don’t forget your 20% discount vouchers on your account if gold status

Considering this is a booking in May (from which point it’s all dynamic pricing), buying points will be inevitably more expensive than booking with just cash. Could be worth it i guess if you have some points in your MeliáRewards account. As Dave mentioned, check the impact of your 20% voucher(s). It is likely to reduce cash and points price.

I notice in my account I have a Birthday Reward – offering a room upgrade on my next booking.

Says it is eligible when you check in online – has anyone tried it with a points booking?

Yes, worked a treat for me in Manchester last month. Got an upgrade from The Studio to The Townhouse. Showed in the app as Upgrade Cumpleanos, so I knew it had registered.

My wife has 2,000 Melia points expiring at the end of the month. Is there a simple way to keep them alive? I know that they’re not a transfer partner with Amex. If not, does anyone know what the conversion rate to other schemes is? I can see that they can now be transferred to AA, BA, Vueling, Iberia amongst others, but there is no info on the conversion rates. I’m sure it will be rubbish, but am wondering if there is a mis-alignment on Avios transfers in the same way that there is with Accor.

    I’ve found some further info:
You seem to get 30 Avios for every 100 Melia points irrespective of the route. But is there a way to keep the Melia points alive?

IIRC 1000 to Iberia gave me 300 avios. Which can then be moved to BA.

Buying a 1000 for 5 euro will extend the validity for another year.

I stayed at Melia Alicante at the end of August; does anyone have any experience of how long it takes for points to be credited? It’s been a week now; just wondering if I should be chasing?

    Niall 113 posts

It has generally been taking 10 days for me for some time. I wouldn’t chase until after 2 weeks. The point will probably come and chasing Melia is a very annoying experience.

    Thank you Niall.

You were right. The points have just been credited.
