A new New York Avios redemption route with American Airlines via Dublin

American Airlines has announced that it is launching a Dublin to New York JFK service from 12th June 2013.

The outbound will be a day flight, leaving Dublin at 9am and landing at JFK at 11.30. The return will leave New York at 18.55, landing in Dublin at 6.55am. These are pretty good timings for a tourist trip.

American plans to use a Boeing 757 on the route, which will have only Business and Economy seating. The 757 business class seat is lie-flat but angled to the floor.

BA reward availability to the US has got surprisingly difficult to find in recent months, so this route will provide an alternative. It may prove especially handy for the day flight, where the angled seat will be less of an issue. You will also be able to go through US immigration in Dublin, allowing you to land in the US as a domestic passenger and walk straight out of the airport.

For someone in the regions, flying to Dublin to pick up this service is no less inconvenient than flying via Heathrow. If you book your UK to Dublin tickets separately, you will also make a big saving on Air Passenger Duty – although you need to take precautions to ensure you don’t miss your connecting flight if your UK flight is delayed.

It is a shame that AA does not yet fly to Boston, because Boston to Dublin is a touch under 3,000 miles and thus falls into a cheaper Avios redemption zone! Aer Lingus flies to Boston, and that is only 25,000 Avios in Economy (return) and 50,000 in Business.

Remember that American Airlines also flies to Chicago from Dublin, as indeed does Aer Lingus.

For seats on the AA routes, you should not necessarily trust availability as shown on ba.com (although if it shows, you can book it).  You can check redemption dates on the AA website (you don’t need to join AAdvantage to check flight reward availability) and then call British Airways Executive Club to book.

How to earn American Airlines miles from UK credit cards

How to earn American Airlines miles from UK credit cards (April 2024)

American Airlines no longer has its own UK credit card.

There is, however, still a way to earn American Airlines miles from a UK credit card

The route is via Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy hotel loyalty points convert to American Airlines miles at the rate of 3:1.

The best way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points is via the official Marriott Bonvoy American Express card. It comes with 20,000 points for signing up and 2 points for every £1 you spend. At 2 Bonvoy points per £1, you are earning (at 3:1) 0.66 American Airlines miles per £1 spent on the card.

You can apply here.

Does this route have cheap fees & taxes, like Aer Lingus?

    • Raffles says:

Not sure. It won’t have Air Passenger Duty, which will sale over £100. Not clear what fuel surcharges BA would add when you booked, though. On Expedia, the tickets show (on a paid ticket) taxes of £234.10 in Business. Air Lingus is usually under £100 in Business. American Airlines ex London would be £531, though, so a £300 saving (less the cost of getting to Dublin).

DUB-JFK offers some interesting possibilities and I look forward to learning more. I’d like a LON-DUB//DUB-JFK-LON ticket with a .24hour stopover in DUB but suspect that would be a phone-only deal using Avios.

DUB-JFK doesn’t seem to have been loaded yet and is not on AA’s New Routes pages online. I tried a revenue booking for July 2013 at aa.com and was able to select LHR-DUB with BA outbound but the DUB-JFK routeings were via LHR or ORD with AA or BA, so a bit pointless unless going for the craic.

Thanks for posting, this would suit me very nicely! Must keep it in mind for future bookings
