Chasing Mr Porter

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Back in October, American Express offered Platinum cardholders 1,000 bonus Membership Reward points if they bought something from online luxury mens retailer Mr Porter.  Gold members got a similar offer for 750 points.

Despite being exceptionally expensive in general, I did find a pair of socks on Mr Porter for £8 with free delivery. This seemed a bargain for 1,000 Membership Rewards points (worth 1,000 Avios for example) so I ordered a pair. As did a lot of Head for Points readers.

It was not clear when the 1,000 points were due to post. Unlike the recent travel promotion, the points were always due to post in arrears.

Someone told me that they had been informed they would arrive by the end of January. However, on Thursday I got bored of waiting and fired off this email to Amex via the Secure Messaging Centre on their website:

Hi. In October 2012 I received an email from Amex offering 1,000 bonus Membership Rewards points if I made a purchase from Mr Porter (mrporter.com).

As you can see from my account, on October 15th I made a purchase from Mr Porter for £8.

I have not yet received the 1,000 bonus Membership Rewards points for this transaction. Can you please add them to my account as soon as possible?

Thank you

On Friday, I got the following response:

I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to you due to this glitch.

I confirm that I have credited the 1,000 reward points as per the offer with MR PORTER to your account. You can expect this credit to reflect online as well within 48-72 hours.

Please accept my sincere apologies for the inconvenience this delay may have caused to you.

We thank you for your valued custom.

Sincerely,

and, indeed, the points were there.

I should say that a friend sent a similar complaint and did not get the 1,000 points added – he was told that his complaint had been sent off to someone else to investigate further. (EDIT: his points arrived on Saturday morning). However, if you are still missing your 1,000 points then I recommend spending a minute to fire off a message.

Next up will be chasing the points from the travel insurance and FX promotions, but I’ll give them a bit longer.

      mine posted quite qucly

    • Raffles says:

Yes, got that without any trouble. They were giving them in sweeps every few weeks, so if you did it nearer the end date in December you may still have to wait a bit.

      • James says:

I got my 500MR today – not bad for a 1 point transfer to Nectar! Thanks for the heads up

I chased them on Friday, and have just got a message saying “There might have been a technical issue due to which you have not received your 1,000 points for the purchase at Net a Porter”, and they’ve credited the 1000 points manually for me 🙂

  • gnarlyoldgoatdude says:

I’ve also got the Net-a-Porter (sic) message.
“I see that the offer states that you can earn 1,000 Membership Rewards points on your first transaction at NET-A-PORTER between 9th October and 18th November 2012.

I see that you have made transaction towards MR Porter.com on 17th October for the amount of £17.00. Please be assured that I will personally follow up on this concern and respond to you with status in 10 working days.”

I did make a Mr Porter transaction, so it’s just their lazy reply that’s wrong.

  • Arno McLean says:

I asked American Express about the points for the FX this was there reply:

“As per this offer’s terms and conditions, the 5,000 Membership Rewards points will be credited to the Card you used to set up your FX International Payments account within 90 days of the close of the promotional period, that is, by the end of March 2013.

I hope you find this information useful.”

    • Raffles says:

I emailed the FX people today about the same thing.

I know 1 person who got the 5k a couple of weeks after the transaction …. but only 1 person!
